Tue Mar 04, 2008 1:12 am

I am currently watch special 20/20 edition on Royal family of England on ABC right now. It is very interesting. Queen Elizabeth II gave special permission to video everything for 1 year. It just start and it is interesting to see how everything operation inside the Buckingham palace.

I'm currently watching as well, very interesting. Amazing to see the amount of people caring for the Queen on a day to day basis.

Cool, that show is on for 9 weeks in Australia as they are commonwealth of UK. I am not sure if ABC in US show it past 9 weeks or tonight is first time that they show it for America.

Looks like it's a one time 20/20 special, which is too bad, because I'd watch more of it.

Barbara Walters from 20/20 said that Queen herself is very private person and permitted for this one time only to video everything. I am sure it was on her nerve as camera was everything and even closer to her. I am wonder why everybody is intersting with England not another Royal family in Europe countries??

Just out of curiosity, I recently watched "The Queen" on a sleepless night the other night, anywhoo....why do you brits support this family? I'm assuming that your tax dollars cover most of the expenses, including massive security, massive amounts of real-estate and "questionable" acquired assets through years of annexing countries, etc. I mean, I know it's a national pride thing (maybe) but isn't it sort of stupid when you have a parliamentary government which is a democracy? I don't know the figures, but it seems like there is quite a bit of money spent on a family who lives for free..

If you get to see the last episode in the series it is discussed.
It costs each and every Briton 63 pence (that was for the year the documentary was shot) per person to sustain the monarchy. Equates to about a $1 US.

So in the UK, there are nearly 61,000,000 people, think of what that money could do to countries that are impoverished due to the British Empire Rule for centuries?

Not to start and anti-british thread, but I mean, come on! $1 or 1 pound per person can make a huge difference in the world.

And how much does the US spend on Defence ?

Pot/Kettle

At least they get some tourism dollars/pounds in return for it.

The US is a much bigger and more worldy involved as far as military goes. We pour enormous amounts of money defending countries like S. Korea.

(PS, I don't agree with the Iraq war if that is what you are thinking of)

And this thread it not about the US. My question still reamains.....

Not really a pot/kettle situation. This thread is about the Royal family, not a comparison of US spending vs. UK spending. I have no doubt that the US is pouring massive amounts of money into military, while having a negative affect on our education and social programs, soemthing that I admire about the UK, but the question is, why do you STILL spend so much money on these people who's family tree has no branches, but goes straight up!? The only one who did you a bit of good was Diana, and she's gone now, and the rest have just plundered the world for its resources for centuries, being probably one of the most distructive countries in history of culture, foreign economy, and welfare.

"Uneasy lies the Head of the Crown!" Indeed!

38.4 million GBPounds is not a huge amount of money in the reality of the world.
Canada's Governor General budget is 19 million C$ which is about a 1/4 of the royal household buget and is for only 2 people.
The royals are a lot more self sustaining than people realize, they create jobs, support huge amounts of charities, are generally apolitical.
Public appearances by the 'Royals' in 2006 over 4000, Princess Anne alone accounted for 640 of them. They serve a purpose in a way that few other countries have access to, whether it is as ambassadors, head of state, or as a soldier on the ground in Afghanistan. They are the leaders of their people in a quaint historic way, something that most north americans can't appreciate because we just don't have the history.
