Could Anyone Survive This?

Sat Mar 08, 2008 5:07 am

Whilst I was trawling through YouTube, I found this spine-chilling video of a planetoid hitting Earth and reducing it to a smouldering ember.

What do you think? Could anyone conceivably survive this? As you can see, a fiery shockwave encircles the entire planet, burning everything up.

As the planetoid approaches Earth, a huge shadow is cast; a city is darkened as the huge shadow passes overhead.

Note the blackened hulk of Big Ben in a smouldering London, as bells peal out a mournful death knell. Note the remains of the Parthenon in a smouldering Athens. Watch the oceans evaporate instantaneously, and the snow flash right off the mountains.

I'm surprised Earth doesn't crack up and shatter like a big egg upon the impact of the planetoid.

So, how could anyone survive?

What would you do if you saw a huge shadow coming over your city, or saw a huge object off in the distance descending towards the horizon, knowing there is NOWHERE to hide?

That sounds exciting. I'd love to witness like a 10 second solar eclipse.

Wouldn't the whole planet ultimately come apart from something like that?

In the 1970s, during the Ray Gun Presidency, I shared a house that faced San Diego Harbor in Mission Hills. Something like 30% of the US Naval Fleet is home ported here as is the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and (at the time) Naval Recruit Depot. There is also an Anti-Submarine Warfare School, now SPAWAR (Space Weapons Research) etc. etc. etc.

We had a deal -- in the case of nuclear attack the neighborhood was meeting on the roof of the house to drink coctails, watch whatever we could see of the spectacle of MIRVs raining down on as and to assure a full dose of radiation. At the time the administration wanted the population to practice evacuation drills to North San Diego County (what to sleep in tents near Camp Pendleton -- very large Marine Corps base) or the desert -- great place for a million people to show up without water if it is summertime.

Winnable nuclear war -- yeah right.

I think the initial shock-wave would be so powerful it would kill many people. And i see no way any survivors from the shock-wave could live for any extended period of time without being killed i.e. with the fire etc.

Didn't something like this happen already ? I read a theory once that a smallish planetoid hit the Earth at least once (some years ago, mind) and that's what formed the Pacific Ocean.

I don't think that anybody could possibly survive this.

The atmosphere itself would be filled with so many toxic particulates that the atmosphere itself would be un breathable. And if we did breathe it in we would essentially be dead within minutes or hours depending on the concentration of toxins within the air. Thats my guess.

Furthermore, lets look at the size of that object. It is massive. Presumably its travelling extremely fast. If we use the equation P=MV, whereby M being the mass (which from the video looks large) and V (which is basically velocity which also we are presuming to be high) the momentum (P) would just be through the roof.

Now if something with a high momentum of that size just crashes into the Earth then I would expect the whole of the World to be literally, obliterated. Nothing would be recognizable in the video like it is i.e. Big Ben.

This in essence is the extinction of all life on Earth. So no, I don't think we could ever survive something like this. Even if humans did survive (which is really unlikely), then we would soon die as there would be no plants (to create oxygen) and no animals (for basic sustenance such as milk and meat) and the water will be polluted with so much dirt and dust.

I heard something about some kind of Star Wars system whereby nations fire lasers into the sky to stop incoming meteors. I wonder whats happening with that?

Regards.

I think Bruce Willis will be the only one to die. He'll drill a hole to the center of the rock and explode a bomb in there to blow it apart, thus creating two smaller falling objects that miss the earth. Unfortunately, he'll have to stay on the rock to do so, so he'll get blown up. The real tragedy will occur after the event; his hot daughter will marry a really bad actor.

You wouldn't get a Visa. Or survive the shuttle up from Heathrow. And the train wouldn't take the strain! Big grin

I think if that sort of thing was imminent I'd just get very, very drunk and stay that way until I was evaporated. At least with a couple of bottles of good Malt inside me it would take long! Big grin

Or you could just eat a few plates of macaroni cheese and blow the thing right back out of the solar system. I've seen you do it before. Peee-yooo  yuck

I already have two Visas. And an Amex. They're sure to let me in - those North Sea oil revenues can't last forever, and their only other source of revenue is tartan-coloured tins of shortbread. Mmmmm - shortbreadddd....

Your remarks are against my human rights and I therefore pronounce you as meteor fodder and you shall be catapulted into space in the unlikely event of a threatened catstrophic strike! You will then knock the aforementioned metoer aside and continue into the far reaches of outer space leaving us all in peace and harmony, with no more silly thread hijackings!! Big grin

It would be really crazy if there were astronauts on the ISS or something like that, watching something like that happen.

A collision like the one on this video was what created the moon. I don't know how many zillions of years ago.

And no. Northing would survive such a collision.

There is some disgareement about that, I believe. The age and composition of the moon, and that fact that it coalesced at all, would seem to be at odds with this theory, although this does not prove that such a collision did not occur at all, just that it may not have resulted in the formation of the moon.
