Just Felt An Earthquake!

Sun Mar 09, 2008 9:32 am

It felt like about a 4.2 or so. I just got of the phone with Superfly who was out partying with Ctbarnes   tonight in SFO.
So It's not him, this time.

Some knucklehead had to IM me this:

"747438 2008-03-09 01:34:54
Earthquake ? Sure it's not the beer ?

Well, at first I wasn't sure. We were listening to "Built to Spill" pretty loud and thought it was the sub woofer.
It was strong enough to overpower 100 watts.
and THEN the beer!

It might help if you let us know where in California that might be. Does beer prevent knowing where you live?

I know where I live. I'm right here.

Cuca-freakin-monga!

That's really no joke. I'm in the Alta Loma area of Rancho Cucamonga.

As I was typing this reply, another small "bump".  eek

About 23 years ago, I experienced an 8.2 one at MEX. The next day we had an 7.8 aftershock. I remember never being scared like that in my entire life. Nature can be a bitch, sometimes.

I'm wondering if we had a small one this afternoon. The house felt like it was swaying gently.

More likely due to shoddy New Zealand builders than any actual seismic activity  Smile

Whoa!
old The Sylmar, CA. quake back in '71 seemed to last an eternity. The frightening part is that you never know if it was a fore-shock and the big one is yet to come.  beady  Let's not read anything more into that statement, OK?....JGPH1A.

AR385. You must have thought that the world was ending. What were you doing when it hit?

Fortunately we don´t have those things here in Uruguay....

I remember my first earthquake experience, in Nicaragua. It was a "mild" one, at 4 approximately.

I remember I was skocked, because although I knew about earthquakes and all that, I guess I had deep in my brain the concept that "land is safe. It doesn´t move". I didn´t feel safe for weeks after the incident.

Cal Tech seismology reports it as a 3.9. You don't what the hell you're talking about!

Don't let anyone tell you that it's wrong for your house to be gay. Only your home knows how difficult it is to come out of it's own closet. More assistance is needed for gay and lesbian houses.

I am looking on the USGS website at Southern California. There were two earthquakes reported about 0130 on 9 March. They are 3.1 and 3.9 both between Pomona and San Burnadino. Reading the thread, I can only assume you are in that area. There are no recent earthquakes listed near any other population centers.

I check the earthquake map for the Pacific Northwest every day. It is interesting there are swarms of 2.0 earthquakes around Maupin in North Central Oregon but scientists can not find a fault. I remember going through the "Rattle in Seattle" in February of 2001. My partner at the time thought Mt Ranier was blowing up. I knew that was not true, since I lived in Portland when Mt St Helens blew. It was 6.5 in Olympia, but I didn't think it was too bad. I never want to go through that again! I also remember the swarms of quakes when Mt St Helens was active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were not too bad, either. But, I do not ever want to live through that again!

I remembered when that happened back in 1985. I was living in Los Angeles at the time and remember seeing the reports and images on TV. That must have been very scary.

I have the movie of the 1971 Sylmar earthquake.
You must have been very young at the time. Were you the kid riding his bicycle that fell in to the wash and almost got electrocuted by the falling power lines?
My favorite character was the drunk guy at the bar.

Fly- I think you got the movie "Earthquake" and the Sylmar quake confused. I was living in Northridge in '71 and it had lots of aftershocks-scared my mom so bad, she wanted to move back to Indiana.
Movie on the other hand was pretty cool for it's time...Circa '74 I do belive.  Smile

I was living in Northridge during the 1994 earthquake. The first earthquake we experienced was the 1987 Whittier/Narrows earthquake. It scared my mom so bad, she wanted to move back to Indiana too.  Smile
We are originally from Gary.

I thought the movie was a reenactment of the 1971 Sylmar earthquake but I guess not.
I have the movie on DVD. It is a good movie. I love all the drunk characters. Big grin

On the east side of the 15fwy,the winds were really blowing ,and at first,I thought the winds uprooted another tree. But the noise was to sharp which sounded like a bomb going off that it jolted the house big time. However, there was damaged done by the winds as the fences were partial knocked down which doesn't really surprise me as it will spur me to get off my butt and replace it because of rotting wood.

Yeah, we did! Big grin I'm a Chicago native, but I had a great aunt who was a school teacher in Gary. My mom was(is) from So. Indiana. I remember Gary well. My great aunt used to live in the Dalton Apts. on Broadway-years ago. I used to live in Northridge on Reseda Blvd. in the '70's.  Smile
Now I'm here in the ATL.
Yeah, the drunks in earthquake were funny! IIRC, they used some news footage from where the 5, 405, 210 and 14 interchange collapsed-the first time, in the movie. So, you're not totally off. Big grin

That was the scene that made me assume this was a reenactment of the 1971 Sylmar earthquake. Sylmar is just a huge freeway interchange anyway.

I might have experienced a minor earthquake while I was in Japan. Or it might have just been a big truck going over a bump? Anyway the control room staff of the chemical plant I was visiting took no notice. I guess stuff like that is almost a daily occurrence for them.

I remember watching a TV program about Charles Darwin. There was an excerpt from his diary describing a Chilean earthquake that was narrated. I was really impressed by it. From Google...

"An earthquake like this at once destroys the oldest associations; the world, the very emblem of all that is solid, moves beneath our feet like a crust over fluid; one second of time conveys to the mind a strange idea of insecurity, which hours of reflection would never create. In the forest, a breeze moved the trees, I felt the earth tremble, but saw no consequence from it.—"
