SNL "Totally In The Tank" For Hillary Clinton

Mon Mar 10, 2008 4:16 pm

Has anyone else noticed that Saturday Night Live is not even remotely unbiased when it comes to covering the Hillary vs. Barack campaign?

It started with Bitch is the new Black (which apparently is okay, while "monster" is bad). Then the media was taking it too easy on Obama. And this week, it's OBAMA calling Hillary at 3am looking for advice because he's too bumbling and naive to take care of things himself.

Has SNL gone too far? Or, is there even a "too far" to go to?

It's SNL. Renowned for pushing the limits of what is 'too far'. I think all the skits thus far have been hilarious. Bias really doesn't come in to it - they'll make jokes wherever there is opportunity to make jokes.

And lets face it, the two people concerned are doing a pretty good job of creating a laughing stock without any help from SNL.

No, it went off the air about 7 years ago. Now they have some crappy program with the same name in it's old time slot.

It's been downhill for that show since Will Ferrel and that whole group left. I didn't know anyone still watches.

They still have some good sketches, like the JetBlue one, the Justin Timberlake song, the..., well, um, well, that's probably about it for the last 5 years. But hey, it could be worse, they could be MadTV  Wink .

checkmark  It's hey-day was in the 80's, I think, with the likes of Eddie Murphy, Mike Meyers, Martin Short, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Christopher Walken etc. The only thing close to that era was the when they had Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan etc. Horatio Sanz and Rachel Dratch are still around, though, and they are pretty hilarious.

I still watch, though, as they do have some funny stuff going, and Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers are still awesome in Weekend Update.

Agreed. Used to be good with Will Ferrel and celebrity jeopardy. Now the only time I see it is when I'm channel surfing right on past it.

If they are in the tank for Hilary I wouldn't be too worried if I were Obama, it might net her about 8 votes.

Its hey-day was the late 70's. Watched it every sat night. Mr Bill, the Taste Buds, killer bees, Rosanna Rosanna-Danna, Father Gudio Sarducci. The best.

Some of the digital shorts are still funny. Natalie Portman's rap, and the nightmare skit from two weeks ago stick out in my mind.

Looking for political prejudices on a comedy show is pathetic.

Is Barney promoting McCain to much?

12 replies, and not one on topic. You guys have REALLY short attention spans. If you want to talk about SNL as a whole, you should start your own thread.

In responding to people saying they didn't like Hillary because she's a bitch, Tina Fey says basically, "damn right she's a bitch, because bitches get stuff done." and finished it with "Bitch is the new black."

I think it's a pun on "Pink is the new Black", talking about fashion trends. I don't think it works very well today, in this context.

Its a comedy show--I don't exactly see how they are obligated to remain unbiased. You have got to be kidding! Should we pull The Daily Show off the air since John Stewart has publicly stated his support for certain candidates on it? Get a sense of humor!

Let me guess -- Hillary supporter?  Smile

Seriously, if it were a comedy show, then these skits should at least be funny. THe debate one was definitely funny. But the 3am ad? And the cartoon dispatching Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton? Those simply weren't funny. And I laugh at nearly everything!

I'm not a Hillary supporter by any means. I agree, SNL often misses its target, but that doesn't mean that it suddenly becomes journalism!

Not saying it's journalism. But don't you think it's slightly hypocritical when they rail on the media for being biased, then become quite biased themselves?

No!

SNL has not gone too far. What the new york times did to McCain was an outright blatant, biased smear against a Republican. That was going too far!!! All SNL did was mock the obvious! Which was, displaying the free media pass Obama has enjoyed up to the Texas primaries, in a flippant, humorous manner. It was nothing negative, nor was it untrue! No big deal!

If one can not see Obama has had a free ride in the media, then you're the new breed of Kool Aid drinker!

Getting back to the topic, I actually saw the episode that we are talking about a few weeks ago. And yes, it was an obvious SNL gang support for Hillary. The episode had sucked before that point though, so after that it encouraged me to leave the room.

Do you call constantly trying to link him to Islam and Rezko a free ride? How about inexperience? I will certainly grant you that Olberman has been very pro-Obama throughout. But CNN has been pro-Clinton, and Fox has been anti-Obama. It is a myth that Obama has had a free ride, just much as it was a myth that Clinton was getting all the tough questions first in the debate.

What about the cartoon could have been changed to make it amusing to you? Did you find it offensive, and if so, why?

Al Sharpton himself thought it was funny...

Fair-use excerpt from http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/20..._dish_chris_cuomos_royal_flap.html

"So what did the Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson think of last weekend's "Saturday Night Live" cartoon in which Barack Obama kept sending them off on wild "fact-finding" goose chases in Africa so they wouldn't tarnish his campaign? "I laughed," says Sharpton, who was fitted with a canine stun-collar in the "TV Funhouse" sketch. "In fact, Barack has repeatedly asked for my support. I haven't endorsed either Barack or Hillary. As long as things are still up for grabs, I intend to remain neutral.""

Here is the cartoon in question:

I see it differently. I see the media reporting Team Hillary's desperate, and vile smears on Obama, which by the way were plentiful, not to mention uncalled for, and back fired on her. However, when a conservative is ever so slightly implicated in a scandal. They are automatically guilty by association, and such stories are drugged on indefinitely by the main stream media, regardless if they are guilty or innocent!

Quoting D L X (Reply 23):
But CNN has been pro-Clinton,

Yet, it was CNN that went out of their way to debunk a story by the Washington Times, that stated Obama went to a Madrassa. The main stream media would never go out of their way for a conservative. Would CNN do that for a conservative. NO F-ing WAY!!!!

Quoting D L X (Reply 23):
and Fox has been anti-Obama.

I've seen Fox criticize McCain and many other rep/conservatives as well. Just because Fox does what other liberal media outlets won't do, re. Obama, does not mean they are anti-Obama.

Also,
Just say, what you say is true about Obama [I personally don't agree with it] He is still being treated far better than conservatives, by a magnitude of 100!!!

Your boy Obama has it real easy! At least up to now. That may change when he gets the nomination?

I like the older guys - after the mid-90's guys, Norm McDonald was often the funniest, then he got canned because he ripped on the exec's pal, OJ Simpson.

That was when I watched it a lot - Kevin Nealon, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, Phil Hartman, the three you mentioned and a couple of others - strong cast.

I wouldn't know about the TV broadcast (don't have a TV), but O'Reilly (as least in the past few weeks) on his radio show has been pretty even about Obama.
