Best Way To Get From Israel To Cairo And Back

Wed Mar 12, 2008 7:51 am

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to Israel this summer on birthright, and then I'm hoping to go on an Egypt tour afterwards with my parents. I need to get from Tel Aviv to Cairo in three days and then back to Tel Aviv to fly home after the tour. The once a week El Al flights do not work with my dates. The only airfare I can find is pretty expensive and it's through Jordan. Is there any other suitable option, or do I need to pony up the $400 to fly Royal Jordanian on TLV-AMM-CAI-AMM-TLV? Also, as far as passport control and border control goes, is this okay with Israel and EL AL? If possible, I'd love to spend a day touring Petra, but I haven't found any options that aren't incredibly expensive.

Thanks in advance.

$400, while expensive, is not outrageous for flying in a region as expensive as the Middle East. If the El Al flights don't work out for you in terms of timing, why don't you try taking Air Sinai? I think they fly MS 737-500s.

Alternatively I'd suggest trying to go through Cyprus (TLV-LCA-CAI-LCA-TLV). Not too many other options on the table that I can think of.

Isn't it forbidden to enter Egypt if you have a stamp of Israel in your Passport ?

Nope. Israel is at peace with Jordan and Egypt.

I did Cairo - Jerusalem by bus a few years ago...
http://www.signol.co.uk/middleeast05
explains how to go about it (about 1/2 way down the page). Takes a full day though, maybe more if you overnight in Eilat (as I did)
Total one way - about £15 (US$30)

I can't find a way to book an Air Sinai flight...

Nice report. It really got me excited. The bus sounds like a much better deal, at least one way. Maybe I could do a day trip to Petra from Eilat with all the money saved by taking a bus. How long is the total bus ride? I'm a bit nervous taking a bus, plus it's so much longer. However, flying seems like such a pain with connections that maybe I should just go with the bus and overnight in Eilat. I don't speak any Hebrew, which shouldn't be a problem. I'm taking Arabic right now, so I can have very basic conversations and people where I need to go.

You probably could - will be expensive though as the Jordanian dinar is quite strong, and there are only taxis to Petra, no busses (as far as I know). I didn't do this. Let us know if you do!

I recall, something like 8 hours from Cairo to Taba. Crossing the border took an hour or so, enough time to miss the last local bus into Eilat  Sad so share a taxi with some Argentine backpackers. The following morning, the bus took 4-5 hours or so to Jerusalem. I stopped for about 25 mins at a Dead Sea resort - I suppose I could have stopped off for a couple of hours. From Eilat there are plenty of busses straight to Tel Aviv, but it's worth visiting Jerusalem. I also tried to catch the train from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, firstly noone could tell me where the station was (I eventually found it in a random suburb opposite a shopping mall!), then found the line was closed due to a lineside fire! Hope this helps!

I did that in 1999. Quite an experience. Army escorts for a convoy of 3 buses in Egypt, a well dressed guard with a submachine gun in our bus, a long border wait, and another ordinary bus ride in Israel.

I remember the Egyptian bus driver proudly pointing out a destroyed Israeli tank. I also remember the Egyptian border guard getting very upset when we talked to the disguised US soldiers at the border, though he calmed down when we told him we were Americans. The solders we importing a big truck of "Potable Water" from Israel.

I'll second that. Petra is neat. Consider a rental car from Aqaba, if such a thing is possible.
