I've To Be Operated - Extraction Of Premolars

Wed Mar 12, 2008 4:46 pm

Hi guys ,

Today my dentist said to me that I'll have to be operated to extract all 4 Premolars under general anesthetic .
This means I'll be without conscience during the operation .

Has anybody gone through the same intervention ? It's the first time I'll be operated ! I've never been under general anesthetic , how is it ?

I''ve to say that I prefer to be under narcosis so I don't feel anything , and just be sleeping .

The best part about general anesthetic is the 5 seconds or so between being given the anesthetic and falling asleep. It's a bizarre but pleasant, relaxing feeling.

The worst part about general anesthetic is waking up from it. You'll feel a bit groggy and disoriented for a moment, but it's really not that bad. I've had a general anesthetic twice - once for an appendectomy and once when I had to have my ankle deliberately rebroken and reset. On both occasions, the anesthetic part was fine.

It's like blinking. You will go under via an IV, but they gave me some laughing gas too. All of the sudden, you just have an intense urge to sleep. However, as soon as you close your eyes it feel like you are opening them again and you are laying down on a bed. You try and talk, but the back of your mouth is filled with gauze. Then, whomever is driving you home will take you to fill your prescription of, in my case percocet but, some form of pain killer. Just drink a smoothie and watch a movie. Have fun  Wink

I assume you are talking about your "wisdom teeth" as we say in America? I had this done when I was 17 or so, no big deal really. Enjoy your days off from school!

I had a single premolar out WITHOUT anesthesia. The dental surgeon didn't realize it had three roots instead of the usual one. Afterward, I was in such pain...it truly was the worst in my entire life...that I had to stop at the Urgent Care clinic on the way home for a 100 mg shot of Demerol in my ass.

Oh my God. That was the nicest buzz I ever had.

Professionally speaking, bite down on gauze and leave it in place (even after in gets wet and soggy). That's all that can be done.

Oh, I know. I've had molars removed. But she went thru two packages of gauze. It was not stopping. She was going to go to the er next as they couldent get it to stop. Her mouth just kept filling up with blood.

Had mine out a few months ago. Not too bad really, but apparently I was lucky. I didn't have any pain, didn't even need the painkillers afterwards. Only problem is you can't eat anything but ice cream, pudding, yoghurt etc. for a few days, and you look like a hamster for a few days.

Had all 4 wisdom teeth out and 6 crowns done in one sitting....local anaesthetic. Very little bleeding afterwards, no pain, no drugs....and went to a cocktail party 2 hours after I left the dentist. Same whenever I've had root canals...local anaesthetic only, please...and no pain afterwards. (Occasionally a sore jaw from having my mouth jammed open and a slight headache, but big whoop)

I guess I'm just made of strong stuff.

Ouch. I had mine out under nitrous (optional) with local anesthetic. Afterwards I had basically no pain (though I did get a 'script for Vicodin) or bleeding. That's what you get with a good oral surgeon.

Sorry Cadet57, but this posts sounds again more like after the "first-time", then after a session at the dentist.  Big grin  Wink

Are you sure you will be needing a general anesthetic? When I had a similar procedure done I was out but still maintained airway (I was "under" but I did not need any breathing equipment and I didn't have any side effects afterwards). It was called IV sedation IIRC.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out in 2001, and the bottom ones were bone-impacted (meaning the roots were growing into my jawbone). The orthodontist used only local anesthesia, and even though the needle was huge and scary, I didn't feel a single thing after that, other than the dull pressure of him yanking at my tooth. I liked it better because I wasn't groggy, and didn't need much pain killer. Although according to my mom I looked like a fool with all the ice-cream dribbling down my chin.

You should ask the orthodontist if general is necessary. Many times it's up to the orthodontist depending on their level of skill and how fast they operate.

An orthodontist puts brace on teeth. He's not a tooth extraction specialist.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth out at the same time. Back about 10 years ago now.

When I got there, they made me take my contacts out. Went into the room, had an IV started. They have me nitrous oxide for about 5 minutes and it honestly didn't do a damn thing. Anyway, when they go to put me under, they say "count back from 100". Well, I got to about 97 and was out. It was the coolest feeling in the world! 99 came out just fine, but I remember 98 was like someone just pulled the shades down over my eyes! When I woke up, my contacts were in my eyes and my dad was the one who woke me up. I asked him how are my contacts in my eyes because I took them out. Well, apparently the first time I woke up, I put them in, and went back to bed. Don't recall that at all. They sent me home with Oxycodone. I never ended up using any of it because I was never in any pain. I took a short nap when I got home, and was back to doing normal things that night. Never affected me like it does some people. I guess I got lucky.

I went under local anesthetic and was awake through the whole procedure. No problems at all, aside from being a little tense (I hate needles--anesthetic) and being in a position for an hour or so isn't that comfortable. Went home right after the procedure, walking on my own.

checkmark  I had all 4 taken out at once. I was put under, and don't remember a single second from that moment in the early morning until about 4 that afternoon, when I went and ate McDonald's. Not an ounce of pain following that. Never needed the prescribed drugs, either.
