For some reason, those aren't playing for me. I have seen the car though and it looks very nice. One of the few sedans with the V8 growl. I can only think of the Charger and G8 that have the deep V8 sound, do Chevy or Ford have any V8 sedans (non luxury models)?

Ford has the Crown Victoria.

Pontiac usually are dressed up Chevys.
Who knows if Chevy will get their own variant or not.

Isn't your son living in Aus? He should buy himself the Australian version. Or go for the HSV W427 which has the 7.0 in it.

But that isn't comparable to the G8 though. It falls under the luxury segment, and not the performance segment. The Taurus SHO would be an example, but ,IIRC, it is no longer in production.

Well, they were until 1974 when they became dressed up Gran Torino, Thunderbird and LTD II.

Glad to hear it's still considered a luxury car. It's price is far less than other luxury brands and one of the best buys on the market.
Too bad the Mercury Maurader (same as Crown Victoria) wasn't successful. That was a performance car.

If I were looking for a large luxury car, I would sure consider the Crown Vic or its Lincoln counterpart. Quite a bit less than its Cadillac, Lexus, and German competitors.

Disappointed Superfly. Of all the people in this forum to discredit the original Mercury Cougar's heritage.

I'll straighten you out at the "Fabulous Ford's Forever" event April 20. Be there!  Smile

Save yourself $20,000.00 (USD) and buy the Mercury Grand Marquis.
It's only $500 more than the Ford Crown Victoria.
The Lincoln Town Car which is a great car is about $20,000 more.

Lol, the G8 is marketed as being chap and powerful and you're telling him to buy the W427.

This car will have the most powerful engine ever built in Australia, will be the fastest Australian car ever. That 427 is going back to the days when a car model was how many cubic inches the engine is. For that you get I think only 200 built (50 of which will be wrapped around telegraph poles in a year) for a cool 150 odd thousand AU.

IIRC, Chevy had plans for its own G8 variant (which would have resurrected its Caprice badge) but placed it on either on hold (or possibly canceled it) when the ill-conceived CAFE increase bill was signed into law last December.

Kev,
'Fly's right, the original Mercury Cougar (which first rolled out in 1967) was indeed a stretched Ford Mustang platform of the time; the first Cougars rode on a 111" wheelbase as opposed to the Mustang's 108" wheelbase).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Cougar

It essentially received similar platform and styling changes that the Mustang through the 1973 model year.

From 1974 through 1997, the Cougar was a mid-size coupe (although 4-doors were offered during 1977-1979 & 1981-1982 and wagons were offered during 1977 & 1982 only) that shared the same platform as the Torino-based Elite ('74-'76) and the Thunderbird ('77-'97 includes Torino & Fox platforms).

Most Cougar purists will most likely want to forget about the FWD Contour/Mondeo-based Cougar which ran from 1999-2002.
