IPhone 3G Released!

Fri Jul 11, 2008 4:03 pm

Well awaited iPhone 3G has been released to the world, and finally the iPhone comes to Canada.

Anyone got the iPhone?

The plans here in Canada are VERY expensive, which made me decide not to purchase one.

I have the 2.5G version. With the new software, if I'm on WiFi, the only thing I'm really missing is GPS. Since the software is the same, let me just say that it's a huge improvement. It has a few things that need adjusting (mostly with the supporting Internet-side and Mac/PC-side software), but is otherwise much better.

I am using the Exchange support and the MobileMe support and it is pretty seamless. The system even keeps the two separate on the same device, which is handy.

There are a ton of apps now available...some are garbage but many are pretty neat. I do wish that the ones that cost money had a trialware version.

Also, if you have an AppleTV or use iTunes piped into a stereo rig at home, the iPhone/iPod Touch facility for doing remote control of the AppleTV/iTunes is excellent. It's certainly far better than using the AppleTV interface.

You do know that Apple made the Canadian carriers bend over and lower their prices yesterday, don't you?

I love the GPS idea..

Now,, where do the maps reside?.. i mean if i go to say, Paris... does the GPS point me on a Google map (thus requiring expensive "data roaming") or does the map reside with the Iphone?

Yawn.

Being a current owner/user of several Apple computers I just don't understand all the hype about a freaking phone.

Yea but still, its like 30$ for the data, then you have to pay for minutes and stuff, then system activation fee. In the end you end up paying 60-70$ per month, a price I'm not willing to pay for one phone. We pay that same amount for 3 phones on a family plan.

I had a hard time getting a hold of the update. For the longest time iTunes kept telling me 1.1.4 is the most recent update. Just a few minutes ago I finally was able to start downloading the program. It's still in the process  tongue  . Hopefully the upgrade will be smooth!  Smile

I'm just holding out for the price plans to become more reasonable (or opened up to other networks beside o2) before considering buying an iPhone. If you ask me they should have put 3G into the original iPhone.

I suspect you've only played around with one for a short period of time. If you haven't owned one, you most likely don't have a good understanding of its capabilities. In the case of the iPhone, the "hype" is quite justified by its usability and combination of functions.

The activation problems are so widespread and severe, Gizmodo is describing it all as the "iPocalypse".  Big grin

There are way more better phones out there than this iPhone like the Motorola i580....from NEXTEL...Its ruggedized and can handle every weather conditions known...

The iPhone is nothing compare to it...

Ok, you can browse the net...big deal...But a mobile phone should be used to make phone calls...

Theres one specific proble with the iphone...Its not at all ruggedized like the i580...

No matter what....If someone offers me this new iPhone for free...I will NOT give up the i580..

They're Internet-based, but TomTom has written (but not released) an application that would store the data on the iPhone 3G itself.

I went to ATT first and they were sold out, so I called the Apple store but they said I should hurry because the line was long and they were getting low on stock, so I went to the Apple store and the line was MILES long, so I went to another ATT store and they said that all the ATT stores were sold out and it would be 7-10 days if I wanted to "secure" a phone. So I guess I will just wait...

Mobile phones have literally become handheld computers these days and for a good reason. Rather than having 3-4 devices for accomplishing different needs, you have one device that caters to all your needs.

I can't live without one because of the nature of my work, you probably don't need one because your job doesn't require one. I really don't see the need to trash smartphones/smarter phones(iphone) just because you don't have a use for them.

The iphone looks fantastic! I think I'll visit the Apple store in a few eeks to see what all the hype is about.

I have two questions, if you don't mind me asking?

1) Any news on Apple bringing out an application that would allow video streaming from a SlingBox?

2) Is the 3G internet service dependent on the iPhones wireless connectivity? If I brought an iPhone to my cottage that was out of reach from ATT's wireless network, could I then connect it to the 802.11G WiFi network for internet browsing?

Thank you in advance,

Mark  Smile

They won't do that themselves, but I would not be suprised to see such an application from a third-party developer eventually.

I just upgraded the software on the first gen phone. The upgrade had bugs and took a very long time to download and install. I was in hurry and probably should of waited to do the upgrade. I had to cancel in the middle of it so I could catch my flight. Once I made it to MSY I finished it. Still trying to figure out what all the new upgrades are going to do for me but I hope it was worth the hassle!

There have been persistent rumors that the SlingBox people themselves are planning precisely this. It's not really Apple's job to do this if the API is available.

I'm not going to buy the new one, because I'm almost always in a WiFi hotspot (unless I'm driving, where I won't be using anything but the iPod function through my stereo anyway), so I really won't gain anything for dropping another $200 plus $10 more per month for the 3G.

It may have 'phone' in the name, but it's not a "mobile phone." It's a pocket-size multimedia device.

Took a couple hours but I was able to get mine activated after about 3 hours.

Of course, it would have been helpful if the AT&T store had told me exactly what to do with the SIM card... that took another half hour of probing around on Apple's website to find out how to install the damn thing..

First impressions after using it for 12 hours..... its freaking amazing. Texting is awesome. The map/gps function is great too. I was at work tonight and one of my employees wanted to know the number of the local pizza hut.

So I went to mobile.pizzahut.com. Went to search and put in our zip code. Safari switched over to the map function and the GPS locator showed where we were and all the local pizza huts. Tap the one closest ot us, and there's the phone number.

Having a slight issue with mine - very slight.

Its the Mail browser hiding emails - well - telling me there are some there, so you click the item and they dissapear. Anyone else had this problem?

"Load more emails" or something similar.

Apart from that, what a fantastic phone.

Are you using an IMAP mail server? There might be some misconfiguration which lets the server believe that you might not have the credentials to access the respective mail when you're trying to open it.

I have reserved my iPhone 3G a while ago, and picked it up on launch day, on July 11th.

What I like most is the new software, with push email/calendar/contacts, the fact that you can install software without having to crack it, and the new UMTS/HSDPA speed.

What I dislike is the new case - it makes it feel more cheap than the first one.

All in all, the best phone I've ever owned, because it allows you to surf the Internet and read emails with almost no compromise.

New Zealand saw the first iPhone 3G sold, which was sold at Vodafones Queen Street shop in Auckland at 12.01am. Vodafones plans here are bloody expensive. If you want the phone for $199, then you can enjoy paying $250 per month for 2 years, or if you want the phone for $900 then you can enjoy paying $80 per month for 2 years.

I would like the phone, so I will see what the prices are for unlocked phones on web-sites like Trademe.co.nz and put it on pre-pay or a cheap contract as I'm seriously considering getting a contract phone

For many people that's the outcome of most phones just being so unpleasant to use that people are glad when they don't have to.

For many (but of course not all) people who are looking at the iPhone, among the reasons are the integrated iPod functionality and really easy access to the web whenever they want. They are not looking for ways to make their lives more complicated but rather the opposite, making more things so easy that using them isn't a chore any more.

Certainly not everybody needs or wants an iPhone and that is perfectly okay — I myself don't have one either at this point, but that may change with the new model; Although I'd prefer an iPhone or possibly an iPod Touch (basically an iPhone without the phone part but with double the memory) with at least 64GB of memory which isn't available yet.

For most people the decision hinges on personally trying it out; Whether they want one for themselves has less to do with feature lists or theoretical discussions — theoretically it has few things other phones don't have, but what it's got it does in new and easier ways. So either that appeals to you or not, but I would really check it out in person before saying the final word.

I don't think that's really true. How often you're directly talking to people in many cases depends on keeping connections alive; Mailing, posting or texting can actually make it easier to arrange a face-to-face meeting even on a whim.

By the way: Texting isn't really that much easier on the iPhone than on conventional ones — its main advantage is the easy-to-use web browser.

My guess is that the screen illumination staying on and the radio pulling the maps from Google will substantially outweigh the power draw of the GPS receiver being active.

It's probably about the same as relatively intense web browsing for that reason.

That would be interesting to find out. On my Nokia N95, the GPS is able to drain the battery in 45 minutes, which doesn't happen when watching videoclips or "surfing the web" (eventhough it's not real surfing on that phone) for the same amount of time.

Hopefully Apple found a more energy efficient GPS chip... maybe I'll test it someday. What I find really brilliant is that it takes only 10-20 seconds for a GPS fix.

Wow!

Probably due to the "A" in A-GPS ("Assisted GPS"): The raw fix comes from the cellular (and potentially WLAN) location, then GPS is only needed to refine it, not to get an absolute fix.

It would be interesting to see how it fares on pure GPS when it has no cellular or WLAN reception at all... Maybe you can try that when you're in a "blind spot".

Wow. Thats kinda useless i guess.

But any any regard, i think the iphone is really cool but i just cant justify to get it thru ATT. Sure 2 years contract, but what about after? Technically is still locked to ATT after 2 years, so you have to keep paying ATT if you want to keep using it.

I would not treat the iphone 3G as a disposable phone, i would like to keep it for a while and be able to take it to a different carrier if i chose to. I think i would rather plop down $600 for an unlocked iphone now, rather than $199 for something that is tied to ATT for (technically) life.

I guess ATT and Apple are making obscene amounts of money with the plan they have crafted, while i certainly don't blame them for it, it will make think before buying one.

That's a good point, and I agree that it's one of the downsides of the device.

I also wish it would allow you to freely use it as a hard drive, transferring any files you wish to and from it.

Are you using an IMAP mail server? There might be some misconfiguration which lets the server believe that you might not have the credentials to access the respective mail when you're trying to open it.

No, I was using POP - I have now changed to IMAP and it is working fine.

A lot of people are having the same problems (and for me it was a problem never before seen on my HTC TYTN - simple fact of the matter is - it wasn't the SERVER causing the problem, it was the iPhone.

Oh well - fixed now by switching to IMAP.

C'mon guys, there are SO many phones with arrangements like this, only the iPhone get's all the hype because people want it.

no-one complains about a certain Sony-Ericsson model being only on a certain network, but it DOES happen.
