Sending Personal Emails From My Work Address

Mon Jul 21, 2008 6:23 pm

Hey everyone,

I almost finished with a 6 month internship for an American company in Germany, and some of my friends and I have been sending emails to one another to pass the time. Some of these emails aren't really appropriate  Smile. I'm finished at the end of the month, and today I received an automated email saying that routine maintenance would be performed on the email server this weekend. I delete all of these emails immediately after I receive them, so I'm just wondering if I have anything to worry about.

Somewhat of a random topic, but just looking for your input. And as a follow up, I don't think I will be sending or receiving these emails from my work address any longer.

So long as you're aware that deleting them doesn't make them go away, you're fine...  Big grin

Just so you know,
Most corporations, allow managers to view detailed records of their employees if they request it.

Just because you delete an email, doesn't mean it is gone. It is probably in a big data storage retainer.

Most employers and managers don't care too much about your personal stuff from what I have seen. However if you have a real hard case as a manager, there could be issues.

I find it better to use a yahoo, gmail, etc..... for the questionable and spammable types of emails.

My boss once told us: "Never type or look at anything on the computers that you wouldn't want me to see. I won't spy on you, but just know that I *could* see every single thing you've ever done on a computer in this hospital if I were so inclined. And so can a number of other people."

I took the warning seriously.

Yes you do....I know a few people that have been fired for just receiving inappropriate materials. The reason being was they made no attempt to stop it. Tell your friends to knock it off if you want to keep your job. Many companies have filters that check and flag e-mail traffic for things just like these so you may already are being watched.

Yeah, I use my Hotmail and just have it hooked up to Outlook Express. Easy enough to do, better safe then sorry...

Always use hotmail or Gmail. You shouldn't be using your work email for any kind of inappropriate email be it in coming or out going. Keep personal life and work life totally seperate.

I don't know whether having a hotmail or a gmail account would help you. I mean, you're creating an image on your screen which is going to be living inside your hard drive until you reformat or overwrite that section.

When I worked for Douglas we were on a mainframe, the mighty Sperry Unisys 1100. We had terminals all over the plant and we all spent a week in computer familiarization class. They told us "Look. We audit every transaction on the computer. That's right, every transaction. So keep it clean and keep it honest and you'll be fine. If you don't, you'll get fired."

I heard about a number of people who got fired for inappropriate use of company property.

My wife works in state government, and the state is very strict about this. Inappropriate use of the internet or emails is misuse of state property and it will and has gotten people fired.

No, but the company doesn't have to keep yahoo/gmail images, and when you dump your temp store on your HD, you are fine.

ok, so this has gone on for probably about a week or two. most of the time these emails are tame and harmless, but for sure they do cross the line sometimes. i'm just going to tell them all to stop sending them to my company email address.

i just create a folder in my mailbox that says "Stuff Against Corporate Policy."
i've never had a problem.

then again i work for a place that lets me surf anywhere on the internet that i want to.

if there's anything that might be deemed inappropriate or offensive all i have to do is give warning to another person before they view my screen.
