The Blonde Map Of Europe

Tue Jul 22, 2008 6:54 am

Just found this map, showing the frequency of fair hair in Europe. A practical help for travel planning if you prefer blonds. If this map is correct, Finland has the highest percentage of blonde people, most of the Finns living in the ultra blonde zone. Just wondering if this tells something about the Finnish brain capacity? ,)
And what is this blondish corner in the Southern-Italy?

Would you really say that is correct for Finland and Sweden?

From my personal oppinion being lived in both countries I would say Sweden has much more blondes than Finland.

Anyway, Finnish people mostly are not blonds by origin - we are dark. Blondes were "brought" here by the raping  Wink vikings...

Confusing indeed, this is not the first document claiming that Finland is the kingdom of blonds, but I also would say that Finns are more mixed.

Quoting DABZF (Reply 1):

The vikings must have started the blond wave, but majority of the blond genes were probably brought later by the immigrants from Mother-Sweden, many of them forced to move East.

Interesting map.  Smile

Most of my family is dark haired rather then blonde but we came from Karelia several hundred years ago.

However people tend to say that I am dark-blonk but I prefer light brown.

This map was clearly made before the tourism boom.

Today you'd see a long strip of blond color all along the spanish eastern coast.

Hmm, I wonder why the map shows Germany belonging to one group while e.g. England, Scotland and Poland are devided? I bet there are difference between Northern ans Southern Germany.

BTW Are you sure light hair means blond?

Interesting, note the area in the UK, looks like a Viking legacy.

(I understand, if you prefer redheads, the UK has the highest proportion, not Ireland).

True but I note that the UK is shown as varying from 20% to 79%. I can't help thinking a higher "resolution" (or "granularity" to be trendy) would show most of the UK at closer to 50% at the most. I really don't believe Central Scotland, for example has anything like 70% blond(e)s, even from a bottle.

Must be true. The true red heads really rare in Finland for some reason, they turn heads.

And how you define *blond*?
The most common type in Finland is kind of dark blond, there is a Finnish term for it: *The countryroad colour*....  Wink not sure if that goes for the Real Blond...

I don't know ... this map shows Greece in the "least blond" category, yet over the years I've known quite a few people of Greek origin (including some first-generation immigrants) and blonde or otherwise light hair was by no means uncommon among them. Same for people of Italian origin.

On the other hand, I knew many people of Lithuanian origin growing up (they were a big ethnic group in my community), and most of them had blond or at least very light brown hair, just as the map would indicate.

By the way, the word is blond (no "e") if referring to men or to people of both genders, blonde (with an "e") if referring to women only.

In Finland it works an other way around too: if you have a Mediterranean look with thick dark hair, you certainly get positive attention in bars.

Actually the map shows the blond zones in Italy too, in North and South-East.

I used to be into blondes with blue eyes.

Then I moved to New York City. And there, I discovered that beautiful men come in every single color you can imagine.

But nothing can ever come close to matching the shocking beauty of a pair of laser-beam blue eyes looking out from under a thick shock of jet black hair.

Hey, well it is simple. Because of Normans (and Venetians) that have colonized the south of Italy in the past centuries, it's not difficult to find blond people in the Apulia Region (south east) but also in Sicily..

It is correct all north east of Italy because the real Venetians were and are blond. I'd actually say that in all northern Italy it is very common to find blond people and very blond also especially in the Alpine regions.

I guess you could say that Scandinavia and the Nordic countries have a lot of blond haired people. I would say that Sweden has more platina blond ( very light blond ) and Norway has more of a mix between platina blond and dark blond.

When I was a young boy ( my first 10 years ) I had very light blond hair. But now I have become much darker blond.

Something I find very interesting is this; blonde hair seems to be associated with "Europeanness/whiteness" yet very little is mentioned about red haired ppl. They are not only "whiter" but fewer in number.

To digress a bit, I don't think I've ever met a red haired person who gets tan yet blondes tan very well. Having lived in Southern California for five years, I've seen this.
