Taxi Fares In Israel

Thu Jul 24, 2008 4:10 pm

Two days ago my father and I were returning from a trip to Jordan and we had to get to Tel Aviv airport from Amman. So we take a taxi for 35JD (~47USD) on a two hour journey twisting through the Jordan river valley to the Jordan River border crossing in the north. So we cross into Israel and need to catch a taxi to Ben Gurion. We find only one French Israeli advertising a taxi as we exit immigration. We ask him how much to the airport. "580 Shekels," he says. My jaw dropped. Thats 187USD. We asked around for other taxis and the staff at the border crossing said he's the only one and the drive would be 3-4 hours. So we take the ridiculous fare. As we exit, we see other taxis not even 300 yards out that probably would've given us a better fare. We got to the airport in a little under 2 hours. Now, I know prices in Israel are high compared to the U.S., but I still think we got ripped off with this one. Can any Israeli or otherwise confirm?

From the border to Jerusalem is 30 to 45 minutes MAX. From Jerusalem to TLV.. it's 45 minutes to 1 hour (depending on traffic).. All in all, the trip takes around 2 hours... I paid 240NIS...

Huh, actually that's not the part we were worried about. We figured we got a good deal from our main taxi man, Mohammed. We called him short-notice and in 30 minutes he was at the North bus station in Amman. He is extremely talkative and very nice, so we gave him a 10 Dinar + 5 USD tip.

After reading this comment, I am thinking you're talking about the Allenby border crossing. We went up to the northernmost crossing, in Irbid. The Jordan River crossing. We didn't step foot in the west bank. Jerusalem was at least 2 1/2 hours from that place.

ahhhhh... gotcha!!! You crossed the "Sheikh Hussain Bridge" which is very close to Tiberias.. I crossed "Allenby bridge" which is very close to Jericho...

2 different border crossings ....the one you crossed is a good 2 to 2 1/2 hours from Jerusalem.. AND... it's about 90 minutes (if not more) from where i crossed..That makes sense then...
