Israeli Pm Resigns!

Wed Jul 30, 2008 6:15 pm

The Latest From Israel:

Israeli prime minister to resign in September

"Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced Wednesday he will resign in September, throwing his country into political turmoil and raising doubts about progress for U.S.-backed Mideast peace efforts.

Olmert's brief address, given at his official Jerusalem residence, included harsh criticism of corruption investigations against him. He said he was choosing the public good over his personal justice. He has consistently denied wrongdoing but pledged to resign if indicted."

What are the implications of this not only to the Israeli government but their stance on Iran?

I think the most likely successor is current Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, who will be the first female PM since Golda.

If this is the case, I don't see any significant changes, because she has been strongly involved in the efforts to reach a peace deal; as far as Iran is concerned, I don't see any significant changes in the Israeli appoach either.

Took him long enough.

I think it will be Benji Netanyahu. The Israeli's are starving for a leader who isn't afraid to use force when pushed to and won't back down when confronted. Olmert has made the Israeli's almost impotent.
