2009 Cadillac "dts" Presidential Limo Uncovered

Fri Aug 01, 2008 1:07 am

The below Cadillac limousine has been photographed twice within the last month during testing on public roads. It's believed to be more of a armored truck than a true Caddy limousine. With so much armor being added, Cadillac appears to have utilized a truck chassis along the lines of the Topkick medium truck platform. In fact, the limo was seen testing with two regular GM Topkick trucks and the wheels and tires on the limo appeared to be the same size as the Topkick. The tires on the limo are Goodyear Regional RHS, possibly on 22.5 inch wheels.

According to reports, "a very large diesel is under the hood" as the exhaust note coming from the back of the limo was akin to "the medium-duty Topkick" diesel truck.

The styling of the new Presidential limo pulls elements of different Cadillac models. The grille, front clip, and headlights seem to be from the Escalade; the rear seems to display some STS styling. Reports also state that photographers see "holders on the top of the front fenders where two small American flags would traditionally go."

The armored doors on this limo "are at least 8 inches thick". The thick doors indicate it’s bullet and bomb-proof and/or the passenger cabin is pressurized for protection from biological agents like nerve gas. The vehicle is rumored to weight about 25,000 lbs....

This new vehicle is expected to be delivered to the U.S. Secret Service by January 20, 2009 - but that's just a wild guess.

Good God that thing is ugly.

But, wow, 25,000lbs. Being rear ended by that thing would be like being rear ended by a garbage truck.  eyepopping

On the current presidental limo, only the grill is from a production Caddy, the rest of the car is hand made, not counting the engine.

I guess with what IED's have been doing to armored troop carriers in Iraq, there is a need for a much stronger presidental limo

That is the ugliest limo I have ever seen..If I were President Bush or future Obama/McCain I wouldn't want to be seen in that thing..GM is the same company that produced the CTS, so what gives here? That is just YUCK!

What's wrong with the current limo? I think it's pretty new from 2004 or something. I mean how many miles does a Presidential Limo rack up a year? Like 500? Seems like a big waste of taxpayer dollars.

My tax dollars are being wasted on THAT??? It looks like something created by someone using leftovers from the parts bin. Is there really a need for it?

Maybe the Executive Branch relationship with the "mob" in the U.S. Congress has gotten really mean and nasty??

I loved the elegant Lincoln limousines of the 1960's and 1970's. Here's a 1964 Continental limo - classy and elegant!

While I see the need of an heavily armoured car, and that armoured cars are more clumsy than the car they derive from, I must say that with respect that is not coming directly from a standard car the designers made a very bad job. What an ugly truck, Bush current car is ugly as well though. A wasted opportunity altough its not easy to make anthing pretty under the current Cadillac design mode.
While not directly comparable as its not as heavily plated here is a picture of an similarly sized one-off state limousine where the designers got it right despite they had the hard task to have to deal with an especially high roof:

Looks like the result of an escalade crashing into a Rolls Royce Phantom!

I think the new CTS is a very crisp looking car!
(not saying it's a good car!)
But I do like hooks and corners on vehicles and I guess I' am the only one...
On the other hand, a current Lamborghini is good looking and a Cadillac not...explain that!

For image reasons, it has to some 'car' cues, and from an American brand. Basically they have created a very sophicated Armored Personal Carrier. I am surprised at the disclosure of some of the details. I bet that GM takes a huge loss on making this car, but it's own pride is at stake here too. The use of a truck chassis is also needed as if there is an attack, they can jump curbs, go over rough surfaces and ram other vehicles out it's way.

Take away the Escalade part and it would make a nice car!

This car has camouflage to disguise its appearance slightly.

We won't know how these panels fit together until the final version rolls out. It might actually look nice when they are done!

Oh, and the budget for these vehicles appears to be $5 million each, minimum. Probably more.

Agreed!
Bill Clinton was the last President to have a nice looking limo. It was the last to be based on a retail version.
This new DTS thing is hideous!
It doesn't share a single square inch of the retail DTS.

Notice on the rear doors there's a "patch" over what appears to be a circular hole. I wonder if this is a rifle port? It seems likely that it is. This rifle port would be invisible once the vehicle receives its final paint and clearcoat applications.

If the Presidential Limo is using a GM Topkick diesel engine as reported, it could be an Isuzu motor (GM owns Isuzu) that produces 300 horsepower and up to 800 lbs/ft of torque.

Unless you want to pay the vastly higher costs of an assassination there probably is. The threat has changed, will change again.

300 horsepower

Well, that, combined with this:

25,000 lbs....

would give it a power-to-weight ratio that compares very unfavorably with the Fiat 600  Wow!

The thing may be hideous but it needs to offer protection for such a high-level figure.
I wish they made a variant based off the existing Lincoln Town Car.

That spot is usually where the Presidential Seal goes. I don't know if that conceals a rifle port as well.

Agreed. It may be kinda fugly but I think they are more interested in function over form when it comes to protection of the President.

The Secret Service used to lease these vehicles from GM/Ford for like $5,000/year in the 1970s, but I can't find the link where I read that. I guess the Secret Service buys them outright now, since they destroy the cars once their service is over.
