Beijing 2008 Olympics Parade Of Nations Order

Wed Aug 06, 2008 5:31 am

Finally found it! It was from wikipedia, which I know some of you find unreliable, but this is true. Heres the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Su...mer_Olympics_national_flag_bearers

I know it says flag bearers but is in the order they will enter the stadium Friday night.

Quoting QantasA333 (Thread starter):

I found this bit interesting;

"Nations are "alphabetized" in order of the number of strokes in the first character of the country's name in Chinese."

I was curious as to how they would fill in the order from Greece to China, for as far as I know, the Chinese language does not have an alphabet like many other languages.

The phonetic pronunciations of some of the countries are pretty cool as well. Kinda sounds like me when I'm drunk   !

New Zealand - Xīn Xīlán
Australia - Aòdàlìyà
Puerto-Rico - Bōduō Lígè
Zimbabwe - Jīnbābùwéi

Regards, JetMech

Cool. I was curious about the order as well. Despite the whole Tibet thing (which I fully support) I'm looking foward to the opening ceromonies very much.

The order is not based on phonetic pronunciations. Instead it's all based on strokes in Simplified Chinese characters. For example, the first character of Malta in Chinese has 4 strokes. So Malta is listed ahead of Canada whose first character in Chinese has 5 strokes.

Interesting that Lopez Lomong was chosen as the US flag bearer. I wonder how much the Chinese will enjoy a member of Team Darfur marching right in front of them (and not dipping the flag)

Gotta love a non-anglisized alphabet, it's always good for screwing up the order Big grin

Sad that North & South Korea won't be marching together this time, I always thought it a nice touch, even if they were competing against each other at the actual events.

They will march together, there is just going to be 2 members (1 from each North & South) who will carry the flag in together under the name of Korea
