US By Train: The Rail Way To See America

Thu Aug 07, 2008 7:38 am

Found this beautiful article whilst browsing the Telegraph's website. This is for all the Amtrak supporters out there on a.net! This made me REALLY look forward to my upcoming FLG-CHI-WAS-PVD trip home in September (moving back home!) and realize how much we (the US) needs to invest in passenger rail service (and not privatize it).

I knew we would have trouble with Texas Bob. He was pacing the platform at the Amtrak station in New Orleans, tall and rangy in his denim suit and cowboy boots, arguing with the porter about his suitcases. Bob claimed he had been working in the city repairing damage from Hurricane Katrina.

“Show a man some respect,” he said to the porter. Later I heard him telling another passenger about the “important” new job he was heading to in Arizona. But would someone in counter-terrorism really announce the fact to a stranger?

From the same paper in 2001, across the entire country by train. Another great article!

Sweet article. And hope you have fun on your trip. I just took a train trip up the West Coast.

And yes we do need to invest in passenger rail in the US. It's all great to research alternative fuels, but that does lots of good when you can't get anywhere sitting in traffic or on roads that are falling apart. Lets get some real leadership and fix our transportation system!

Amtrak really is the best way to see America if you have the time. You get to meet some interesting people along the way, too. I don't know what I'd do if this nation ever got to a point where taking a train from, say, Chicago to L.A would no longer be possible.
