Pakistan's Musharraf Faces Impeachment

Thu Aug 07, 2008 12:21 pm

His trip to attend the opening of the Olympics has been cancelled and he is replaced in Peking by his Prime Minister.Tough times ahead for the strong US ally, but who has been in troubles since several months, actually since the assassination of Miss Benazir Bhutto.
Musharraf's fight against Talibans and extremist Islamic movements has been rather a desaster, and relations with his neighbour India are strained.
Pakistan's secret service ISI has been repeatedly accused of being infiltrated by Islamic elements hostile to the dismantling of thousands of Madrassas, teaching hard-line islamic propaganda, letting Waziristan develop as a de facto State within the State and refuse external help to get rid of terrorist training-camps in the tribal areas.
