It is going to be a close one between the US and China. China had a strong start but the US still has some big ones coming up - basketball, swimming, and track and field events. China meanwhile will be focusing more on diving and gymnastics but they got gold in several early events.

My prediction: US by 1-2 golds - barely passing China to win it. With some luck China might even upset the US, but it's going to be hard.

I think China will lead in golds, but the US will win the overall medal count. At least I hope so.

I think the US is a lock for the overall medal count, it's just the gold that will be difficult to win. Phelps is going to bring in 7 or 8 golds for the US though - very impressive.

Well, if it doesn't our Government has wasted a lot of money - we have the largest team by far on a per capita basis, and provide significant funds from the public purse to train sportspeople!

They already have - Phelps has already won 2 golds for the US, including the 4x100 mens relay, which is his toughest event. Phelps can win 6 more golds.

Speaking of the 4X100 relay, that was easily one of the most exciting swimming events I've ever watched, especially considering the French hype before the race about how they were going to "crush" the US relay team, only to have Lezak swim the fastest relay leg ever, by far, to come back from nearly a full body length down after the last turn to win the race by a matter of inches. Incredible, I went wild watching it on TV, I can't imagine the energy of the fans in the water cube who got to see it in person, just look at Phelps' face immediately after he realizes that his team won. Magic.

I think that China will win with the most gold, while USA will have the most in total. Australia always do well, but hopefully they will do great this year.

So far China are doing very well, but my biggest surprise IMHO, is South Korea, but how will they do further in the olympics.

The US will very soon - again, they will be winning medals in swimming and many of the track events. Once the main track events start expect the US to start raking in gold medals.

I'm surprised China is doing so well so early, winning medals in many different areas that they are not traditionally very strong at and still holding up in their strong areas (such as diving).

Russia still has not won a gold medal thus far.

That was one of the most exciting races I've seen in a long time. What a finish--and extra sweet considering the French trash talk before the race.

Those slo-mo pics said it all: the thrill of victory (USA) and the agony of defeat (FRA).  Big grin

Seems that it's VERY hard for them to catchup now. How on earth can they lack so far behind?

Australia and UK are doing well too.

As a near political entity, the EU is doing quite well - if my maths is up to the task. And it does quite well if you count golds, total medals or weighted medals. Interesting.

I do know they need to pay that Jamaican guy a bit more so he keeps trying right to the end.  Big grin  crackup

On a per capita basis, how is Aus going to fare against Jamaica, at least in terms of gold (and we are always assured that only gold counts, thanks to Normie May!)?

The latest out of official Aus swimming is something like the UK is spending more on its para-olympics team than is being spent on the Aus team, or the Aus swimming team or whatever. Why do I feel as if something tugging at my pocket?

As long as I've been watching the Olympics the assessment of success has always been the Medal count, when you log on to Yahoo, New York Times etc. They list Countries by total Medal count, not who has the most Gold.

Here's NBC site, it lists the USA at the top because they lead in the Medal Count.

How many track medals do you think you'll win?

Michael Johnson is on the BBC all the time, he says this US track & field team is one of the weakest he can remember and they won't win many medals. You are still strong at 400m, but where else?

The old reliables of the sprints and relays look to have gone to the Caribbean, while anything over 400m is now owned by the Africans.

You need to take a leaf from TeamGB's book - get strong in events that involve sitting down and/or over-developed thighs. We seem to be doing OK at those events.  wink

Yes, since they list the medal table by the official IOC counting method - gold medals, then silver, then bronze.

Look at the medal table as reported by any non-US media. Here's the BBC's:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics/medals_table/default.stm

One gold ranks higher than 10 silver and 10 bronze. Always has, always will.

From Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Summer_Olympics_medal_count

Quote:
The ranking in this table is based on information provided by the International Olympic Committee.[2] In boxing and judo, two bronze medals were awarded in each weight class, so the total number of bronze medals is greater than the total number of gold and silver medals.[1]

The ranking sorts by the number of gold medals earned by a country (in this context a country is an entity represented by a National Olympic Committee). The number of silver medals is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze medals. If, after the above, countries are still tied, equal ranking is given and they are listed alphabetically.

No, in all honesty I think BOTH methods are legitimate and BOTH are reflective of a countries showing at the Olympics. I was simply pointing out that the "US Method" of medal counting wasn't invented this year to put the US on top. My point was simply that the US Media (as long as I can remember) has always reported the medal count this way....or maybe it's because the US has usually been #1 in both categories (atleast in my short lifetime)  Wink .

Either way, considering our much smaller population compared to China as well as the fact that our government doesn't spend a penny on the USOC I am very proud of how well we are doing.

Going into this anyone who thought China wouldn't do significantly better than their previous showings was not thinking clearly....they have the homefield advantage plus as the host they get automatic entries into every event (no need to qualify).

I don't think countries "win" or "lose" an Olympics simply because of the medal count. I think Tunisia won when Ous Mellouli won their first swimming medal, a gold. I think Australia wins every time because of how well they do without a big population. I also think individual athletes win. Nastia Liukin won because she performed flawlessly against a stacked deck. Michael Phelps won because...well...these Olympics will always be tied to him.

You really think the USOC doesn't get any government money? Not a chance man. It may come through back channels and grants, but it comes.

As with the arts, the funding of the U.S. Olympic effort is highly decentralized and largely shared by private businesses and millions of individual Americans. In the U.S., Olympic athletes emerge from a patchwork quilt of local clubs, high school and college teams. Parents and volunteer coaches are involved — sometimes too involved. You need to take a leaf from TeamGB's book - get strong in events that involve sitting down and/or over-developed thighs.

Can we take it that the London Olympics will be advertised as:
"The sitting down and not so much of this running and swimming Olympics"?  bigthumbsup

From todays letters in the SMH.

Much has been made of Britain's improved performance at the Olympics. However, I'd like to point out that of its first 28 medals, 24 were won in sports in which the competitors sit down (canoeing, cycling, equestrian, rowing and sailing).

That's hardly the definition of a sporting nation, is it?

Are you living on the North Shore in Sydney these days S?

Mind you the place is awash with "explanations" of how the Brits are managing to steal away AUSTRALIA'S place in the medal tally.
