The Triumphant (Yet Gradual) Return To Rowing

Fri Aug 15, 2008 3:53 am

So, 11 years ago now, I was a Stroke rower on an 8 Crew, on Town Lake (now called Lady Bird Lake) in Austin. I rocked the slot, however, wound up suffering an inner ear problem that grounded me, which was (right at about the time it was cleared up) by a much more major problem, which in effect led to the end of my rowing.

For the past 11 years, I thought off and on again and again about going back into it. I was always slightly PTSD about it, because the very last time I'd been on the water, I suffered a horrific vertigo spell, thankfully not too far from the dock. And even more thankfully, while with my crew. If I were on a single, well, I try not to think about it.

After being told, that it was something I did so well, and something I speak of so brightly, I decided, what the hell! I'm getting back in it.  Smile I am going to work with my doctor to formulate a plan, mostly of steps to take. (I am first hitting my gym to get a little flab removed.)  Wink

I have the ultimate goal, to be an 8 Stroke again, all those other boats? I hope they enjoy riding my wake.  Silly

Wish me luck, y'all! Big grin

Good luck buddy, hope you'll make it! Back in high school, was an 8+ rower myself, though sitting in the bow... Much better, you're always the first getting anywhere in the boat Big grin!
WARNING! The post above should be taken with a grain of salt! Furthermore, it may be slightly biased towards A.

Did you ever hear the joke about the galley slaves at their oars when the big guy beating the drum stops and says "I have an announcement to make. There's good news and bad news. Which would you like to hear first?" "Good news! We want good news!" "A double ration of swill and grog for all the galley slaves." What's the bad news?" "The captain wants to go water skiing this afternoon."
