It's less effective than laying down in bed and waiting for you body to take care of itself.

In case one has to continue working in the rain at nights, its tough. The only compensation is not having to do any ground pressurisation checks in case of a snag on the Aircraft.

That is so true.

"Another theory, put forth by Stephen Rennard, M.D., chief of pulmonary medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, is that chicken soup acts as an anti-inflammatory. The soup, he says, keeps a check on inflammatory white blood cells (neutrophils). Cold symptoms, such as coughs and congestion, are often caused by inflammation produced when neutrophils migrate to the bronchial tubes and accumulate there." (http://chetday.com/coldfluremedy.htm)

This was also mentioned on an article in my local press, too.

We also eat porridge made from Snake-head fish + ginger. You can try to see how it wonderfully works!

It's even better not to get the cold in the first place. Eat right, take your vitamins, breathe FRESH AIR (big problem in the US, where the heaters go on and the windows get shut as soon as the temperatures drop)....and positive thinking.

I haven't had a cold in about 10 years....my daughter got them constantly her first year at college, in the dorms, until I told her to crack her window open whenever she was in her dorm room. She hasn't had a cold since....

You need to open your bedroom window when you sleep. (No matter how cold it is; pull the frakkin' blanket up!! If my daughter sleep with an open window when it's -10F outside, so can anyone else!!) You'll not only get a better night' s sleep, but you're not recycling any cold germs you may be carting around.

You need a new bedroom, dude!! Trust me, though, fresh air makes a difference.

However, if your bedroom is in a basement...have you considered that you're not getting cold but allergy attacks? Basements are notorious for mold spores....you might consider checking that out....just a thought.

It would not surprise me, I have terrible seasonal allergies.

Guess getting soaked in cold rain for 8-9 hrs in the open on the tarmac does contribute to the common cold, though its still rare, maybe 1-2 times a year.

AB is being used or has been used in the past in the poultry industry as a standard vaccination or in feed for the chicks..... however apparently low level leftover AB was found in the processed chicken meat... the call for ABFC is growing by the day.... in some countries it is against the law to use AB .....

I am no doctor, perhaps someone could shed more light into it what low dosage of AB does if you have a cold.....

Cheerios,

Yeah. Many chinese also believe that eating parts of tigers or rhinos enhances their sexual prowess...!  mischievous

The thing is: Placebos often do work!

With regard to the chicken soup my guess would be that many people don't have much of an appetite when they're ill, so feeding them a not-too-unhealthy soup will in most cases help stabilizing their blood sugar and thus their immune system. Plus the benefits of the placebo effect, of course.

The common cold is caused by a virus, which has no cure, its a matter of time for recovery to commence.....The medicines provided are only to ease the discomfort & do not contribute to the cure.

Although spicy soups are good for a running nose.

Yes and no — a weakened immune system still hurts the recovery, and the immune system is apparently quite susceptible to psychosomatic influences such as placebos.

Research has shown that the immune system can apparently be boosted or weakened by one's mental state; There are numerous interactions between the brain and the body, and some of them apparently modulate the immune system.

In that sense placebos can sometimes help to improve the psychological situation of a patient which in turn helps strengthen the immune system. A really trust-inspiring doctor can have a similar effect, as can positive personal circumstances and a supportive family. Even shamans and "spiritual healers" can have actual physical effects if the patient responds to them.

It is all a matter of degrees and it is probably individual for every patient and situation, but placebos can work even down to the physical level, and up to a point even on things like virus infections.

RE: Chicken Clear Soup - Common Cold Solution

Sun Aug 24, 2008 2:52 pm

A while ago they found that substances found in chicken soup activated certain types of white blood cells involved in fighting viruses. They found that both canned and home-made soup worked equally well.

This hasn't been confirmed in a clinical trial, but it is intriguing. So I tell my patients that chicken soup has been shown in lab experiments to activate parts of the immune system instrumental in fighting off a cold, but that it is not known whether it is actually effective in reducing the duration of a cold. That said, chicken soup is a very safe intervention (it's chicken friggin' soup!), so I have no qualms about recommending it, even if it is unproven.

A "cold" is an upper respiratory infection caused by any number of different viruses including, but not limited to, rhinovirus, astrovirus, coronavirus, and adenovirus. Adenovirus is my favorite because the virus particles are so pretty.
Big version: Width: 197 Height: 179 File size: 12kb

Anyway, the reason there is no cure to a cold is because there's no good way to tell what virus is infecting a given patient. Yes, these tests do exist, but they take so long that by the time the result comes back the patient has usually recovered, anyway. So even if I did have a drug that could adequately treat, say, a rhinovirus infection, I can't know if the patient has a rhinovirus infection as opposed to a coronavirus or adenovirus infection.

Furthermore, the average cold, while it makes the patient miserable, only lasts 3-7 days. So the best a "cure" could do would be to shorten the duration of the illness by a few days. Well, no pharmaceutical company is going to invest billions of dollars and over a decade of research into a drug that shortens the duration of an already benign and self-limited illness because no insurance company would cover such a therapy.
