Why Does NBC Have To Be Neutral Over The Olympics?

Mon Aug 18, 2008 1:27 am

I have been watching both Australia's Seven Network and the US's NBC coverage of the Olympics games.

Something that I have seen is that Seven is quite blunt in referring to the Australian team as "our swimmers", "our heroes" "we got X golds" etc, which I think is great. However NBC refers to the American team as the "US team", the "Americans" etc, despite it coming from a US-based network and the speakers being US citizens? This was confirmed when one of the NBC hosts was interviewed by the Seven Network this morning and he actually said that they must present a neutral front and cannot refer to the American team as "our team" or anything similar?

Has the USA gotten so beaten over anti-Americanism that they cannot even be patriotic and proud during one of the few times a decade it is acceptable to do so. This was reinforced when some Americans I met here in Australia have absolutely no patriotism in them. Some jackass insulted them saying something inappropriate and they didn't respond. If something bad was said about an Australian overseas they would retaliate.

What is going on here?

What happens when they focus on the American team, and start referring to them as 'our swimmers' or whatever? They get criticized for bias. They can't win, whatever they do.

AMEN!

Welcome to my RU list.

Bashing NBC is the complaint du jour right now. I recall that CBS' coverage in Nagano completely sucked, and ABC hasn't televised an Olympics since 1988. There's no reason to expect that they'd be any better, and I wouldn't want the coverage to be ESPN-ified.

I believe the coverage is under the umbrella of "NBC Sports", not the entertainment division, so I can see them trying to maintain an impartial, reporter-type atmosphere. How many people get tired of those "homer-type" announcers in baseball or football?

Most Americans are comfortable with their superiority over most Australians, so no response is necessary.  Big grin  Big grin  Big grin

I actually think the NBC Olympic coverage is much improved.

They got rid of most all the stupid, sappy, "in-depth" background stories where every athlete "overecame" some "life changing event", and instead are actually mostly just showing the actual events! It's about time. I want to watch sporting events, not a freaking soap opera with occasional sports snippets.

I don't feel beaten down by anti-Americanism at all.

As far as blatant bias by the television hosts, I have found the announcers to be pro-USA at about the right level. I really don't need to hear brainwashed cheerleading from the television announcers to have pride in my country, I find the "rabid fan" hosts such as you describe in Australia to be very condescending. I also find most network television in the USA rather inane and worthless, so it might just be me.

It's just a sporting event for Christ's sake. It's entertainment. Nothing will significantly change in my or most anyone elses life as a result of who wins what event (absent the actual participants of course).

I think most people in the USA look at the Olympics in similar fashion. Now if it was the NFL, well......

Sevens coverage is a disgrace. I understand that most Aussies want to see sports with Aussies in them. But the lack of balance is terrible. I enjoy watching the weightlifting. It is either not shown or is shown at 1130pm and onwards. If only Australia had a weighlifter.

I like the sounds of NBCs coverage. No bias, no jingoism just straight reporting. Sounds great.

Sounds boring!

The BBC commentators get very animated when Britain get a medal, and it just adds to the excitement for the viewer. Seeing as most people who will be watching the BBC coverage will be British, why shouldn't they be more 'bias' towards team GB? At the end of the day, the 'bias' of a News team isn't going to affect the outcome, so it shouldn't really matter.

The NBC people are very careful with the way they phrase things to not sound possessive, but that doesn't mean they don't get suitably excited when an American athlete or team is doing well... just listen to Rowdy Gaines as Phelps won the 100 meter butterfly. His excitement made the race that much more fun to watch, I think it's great.

My thoughts exactly. I feel the same way, which is why I would expect NBC to have some form of patriotism in the USOC.

I dislike all commentating, when I view sports on TV I have the volume turned down.
