NBA: Hornets Pass 10,000 Season Tix Sold

Tue Aug 19, 2008 3:14 pm

This is the highest total since the team moved from CLT to MSY in 1992. Having a 10K season ticket base goes a long way to ensure the long term viability of a team. Congrats Hornets on a great job on and off the court. Nice to see the fans step up and support this team.

Quoting Hornets President Hugo Weber...

"There are a lot of significant things happening, " Hornets President Hugh Weber said Thursday. "We're within 100 tickets (of a lower-bowl sellout), and we've always said that's a significant objective.

"And the other very significant goal which is unprecedented for us in this market is surpassing 10,000 season tickets. Very few teams in the NBA accomplish that, and even the large markets have a difficult time doing it. So we're very proud that in this market, we've been able to do what markets five or six or seven times this size have been unable to do."

What a wonder a winning season will do. They should try it again.

Wow, I didn't realize they have been playing in MSY that long...where did they play before New Orleans Arena opened?  Wink

An honest typo.  Wink

And the New Orleans Arena in '92 was a parking lot.

I wonder if the fact that the team formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics had anything to do with this jump? After the Hornets played the bulk of two seasons in OKC, the rumors definitely swirled that the team was going to make their temporary home permanent. With those rumors put to bed now that OKC has their NBA team, I guess fans in NOLA are willing to fork out the money for season tickets without the cloud of possible relocation hanging out the team.

That could have something to do with it....although right before the All Star game last year, you could tell that the team was seeing increased fan support...and that carried through the remainder of the season and into the playoffs. There was a huge disconnect between the team and the fans when the team was in OKC. Like you said, rumors were rampant about them staying in OKC. No one in NOLA really knew what the intentions of George Shinn were. Now, at least for the time being, the future for the team seems secure in the city.
