The Unofficial Ultimate Epic Anet Beer Thread

Mon Aug 25, 2008 5:23 am

Well folks, welcome to The Unofficial Ultimate Epic A.net Beer Thread.

So, basically, the idear is to post something about beer. Cool facts about beer are awesome, good beer stories are fun, even write a song if you feel so unclined!

I'll start eh... The book I read recently explains that Beer was pretty much discovered by accident, but became popular way back in mesopotamia because it relatively easy to make from the cereal farms and the alcohol in it killed bacteria which made drinking beer much safer than drinking the water. Over the centuries beer has been changed, refined, etc, many times over, but it's still one of the most ancient drinks out there. And it's been making people  Smile for thousands and thousands of years.

Now, over to the world of A.netters. Let this thread of the Non-av forum be open and active!

I officially support this unofficial thread.

That said, I have no amusing pictures of beer or good jokes to add to this thread so I will merely say this. Beer. Is Good. Unless it's Nattie Light. Or really any light beer. And most American beer fails too (layovers in Germany kind of spoiled me)

Weissbier, or Weißbier in Germany, literally translated as "White Beer," and so-called because it was at the time of its inception paler in color than Munich brown beer, is a Bavarian specialty brewed in which a significant proportion of malted barley is replaced with malted wheat. By German law, Weissbiers brewed in Germany must be top-fermented, making them ales. Specialized strains of yeast are used which produce overtones of banana and clove as by-products of fermentation.

Weissbier is well-known throughout Germany, though they are better known as Weizen outside Bavaria.

... Dunkelweiss to be exact (my favourite)

Thankfully you can get certain Weissbiers now-a-days in Finland as well.

Budweiser has a new beer coming out September 15. Budweiser American Ale. I look forward to giving it a try. I drink Budweiser, I like it, I don't think it sucks, and I would venture to say the majority of you drink it (and like it) too....at least those of you from the States.

The fact that the Czechs are the world's biggest beer drinkers is well known. But did you know that if Newfoundland would be an independent country, it would be the runner-up?

The only beer we have in Costa Rica is piss with different names, most notably Imperial. I can get some German beers here, but it's either Warsteiner (another type of piss), Oettinger (the cheapest beer only available at Aldi), and Paulaner (which I want to try but can't buy because when I go shopping, it's mostly on my last day of work every other week).

The best beer in the world is free, cold beer and that's what they give you at Busch Gardens.  Smile

While I was in Germany, I tried a Lowenbrau, and it was decent.

20 REASONS WHY A BEER IS BETTER THAN A WOMAN...

1) a beer doesn't get jealous when you grab another beer
2) when you go to a bar, you know you can always pick up a beer
3) a beer won't get upset if you come home with beer on your breath
4) you don't have to wine and dine a beer
5) if you pour a beer right, you'll always get good beer
6) Hangovers go away
7) when you're finished with a beer, the can is still worth 5 cents
8) you don't have to wash a beer before it tastes good
9) a beer always goes down easy
10) you can share a beer with your friends
11) beer is always wet
12) you always know you're the first one to pop a beer
13) a frigid beer is a good beer
14) you can have more than one beer in a night and not feel guilty
15) you can enjoy a beer all month long
16) If a beer leaks all over the room, it smells kinda good for a while
17) beer is never late
18) a beer doesn't care when you come
19) beer doesn't demand equality
20) You'll be sober in the morning, but she'll still be ugly

Yummo, and brewed in America, and I've got a bottle of it chilling in the fridge. Brewery Ommegang was started by an American who eventually sold the brewery to Duvel Moortgat, the folks who brew Duvel.

The various Chimay beers are good too, but pricey in comparison to the beers of Ommegang. The Belgian and Belgian-style beers have become some of my favorites. Unibr

I also try to drink microbrews as much as possible. My favorite local brews are Sweetwater Brewing's Sweetwater 420, Terrapin Beer's Golden Ale and when in season, Wake-N-Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout. Outside of the area, Flying Dog has some good beers, like their Gonzo Imperial Porter, and I've recently become a fan of Kona Brewing. Their Fire Rock ale is good.

No argument there...

Funny enough, when Corona started out in Mexico, it was so bad it was a commercial disaster. Until a marketing genius came along and launched it in the US as an 'exotic' beer (thus launching the mexican beer fashion) with a very good marketing campaign and made it an instant success. It still tastes like cat piss though.

In Mexico, and most of Latin America, it is considered a 'girl's beer'. And you'll very rarely see a man drinking one.

I am also a fan of Weissbeer. I really like Rickard's White. I tried the Mill Street Wit but it isn't as citrusy as I liked, nor was it the typical cloudy appearance.

My top 3 (Canadian) beers would be:

1. Sleeman Cream Ale
2. Rickard's White
3. Alexander Keiths

My top 3 Import beers would be:

1. Corona
2. Stella
3. Heineken

If you can find it, pick up a six of their Road Trip seasonal brew. It was a happy accident beer, as they were working on a pilsner and some yeast used for an ale ended up in the mix accidentally and they liked the results. It's a nice summer beer without all of the fruitiness most breweries have in their summer beers.

I also recommend trying some of Kona Brewing's beers as well and they're available in you neck of the woods. I can't for their Pipeline Porter to hopefully hit the stores here. They use Kona coffee in the brewing process for it.

Hopefully Terrapin (Based out of Athens, GA) will start distributing in Florida now that they've got their own place and are not contracting their brewing out anymore and can pump out more beer.

1. Sleeman Cream Ale

That's my favorite Canadian beer. They sell it in a brown bottle here and label it as "John Sleeman Presents Cream Ale 33".

The saying in these parts is that Foster's is made from the run-off of pub urinals......

Well, tastes ok to me, and it gets me drunk, Bloody good pub urinals!

That's because we drink Boag's and piss it. Our piss almost tastes as good as beer, so we sell it off to you people...  biggrin

Is Fosters even sold in Australia any longer?  Smile Whilst I wouldn't have expressed it the same way as Wunula, I agree with this sentiments. And, although I'm a former VB and MB drinker, neither are much better. But all of those are better than XXXX!!!

I'm drinking Stiegl, from Austria, at the moment. Will probably switch back to Estrella Damm when the weather warms up, and alternate with Coopers Pale Ale (seems to be the beer of preference in my street). Tooheys Pils isn't a bad palate cleanser either, really cold on a hot day...

But I'm looking forward to my next fruschoppen at the local Bavarian club and a couple of Maissels Weisse to go with the roast pork and wurst!

Ah yes, the great brews from Unibroue. I almost picked up a pack of La Fin Du Monde yesterday, but went with a bottle of Ommegang.

I first discovered Unibroue a couple of years back before one of final exams. There's a lot of bars and restaurants across the street from campus, so around lunch hour I stopped by a place and pulled out my books to study while munching on a sandwich. During a break from the books, I was flipping through their menus when I noticed they carried a few beers from Quebec and thought, "Perhaps a beer will calm my nerves and since it's from home, maybe it's good luck".

so I ordered La Fin du Monde, and for at the time a beer newbie, that's stuff was hard to appreciate at first. I polished it off and figuring it wasn't too bad figured I'd run the table and order the other one on the menu, Maudite. After those two, figured what the hell and ordered another La Fin du Monde.

Whoops.

I get to my exam a little later and taking my seat, found myself wondering why the paper was moving all wavy over the desk. I released those beers were a little stronger than the normal stuff you'd pick up at the grocery. So I took the test being moderately tipsy.

Got a B+ a new favourite beer, and worked up a slightly better tolerance over the years  Wink
