An Example Of Coexistence, Openness, And Freedom

Wed Aug 27, 2008 6:43 am

I was browsing some recent photos from my home country, Lebanon, and stumbled across this particular scene in downtown Beirut:

These three women also happen to be walking right next to a large mosque which also happens to be located right next to a large cathedral.

It struck me what a strong message this photo is sending.

This is the world I envisage. A world where people of different lifestyles, backgrounds, and belief systems can live side by side in peace. I can only hope it becomes a reality one day. The fact that a glimpse of it exists gives me some hope.

We'd all be better off...

Reminds me of the thread Cedars747 started with some pictures from Lebanon and titled it something to mean if that was what Israel was bothered by.

Lebanon is a shining example of people reconciling after a brutal civil war filled with hatred. I was very concerned if that could break down in the aftermath of the Israeli war. But I guess that was underestimating the people of Lebanon.

May you live in peace, prosperity and harmony, guiding others by proving it can be done.
Aameen!!

I haven't been to Lebanon in 2 years so I've just been browsing online photo galleries. Here are a few good recent shots.

This is on the northern coast of Beirut, you can see the high rise construction in the background:

Same general area during the day time when fishermen come to the area in the morning:

Downtown area is full of these trilingual information signs (Arabic, French, English):

This is a view of Jounieh and the Bay of Jounieh from Adma just north of Beirut. Beirut can be seen in the distance on the right. This is a beautiful part of the Lebanese coastline, both during the day and night.

Jounieh during the day time with the bay on the right. You can see the Beirut peninsula peaking out on the far left of the photo:

And of course the famous Cedars in the north, the symbol of the country:
