Lots Of Storm Activity In Atlantic

Tue Sep 02, 2008 11:00 am

I just checked on the National Hurricane Center website, and there seems to be a lot of activity in the Atlantic at the moment. We have the Tropical Storm Gustav which has made landfall in Louisiana, Hurricane Hannah which is tracking towards Florida and Georgia, Tropical Storm Ike which is in the mid Atlantic, and Tropical Depression Ten, as yet not assigned a name, which has formed off the west coast of Africa.

Is this level of activity normal at this time of year? I've heard of two active storms at one time, but never four.

Your thoughts and comments please!

No question, we are having an active year, and we are just approaching the peak of the season, as the chart below shows.

I am travelling to Orlando for a conference in 10 days so I hope these do not develop into full blown Hurricanes!

Does seem to be a lot of activity out there at the moment though

You should be good... I believe Hannah is predicted to hit up in the Carolina's so far... and Ike is pretty far out still.

Would it be wiser and more realistic to flatten New Orleans and re-build it inside the country ,safely away from floodings ??
There will be more hurricanes hitting Luisiana and the soup-bowl of New Orleans, and pumping each year billions into a city that will never escape it's destiny to be flooded or devastated sooner or later again and again..
I know it sounds tough but let's face it- -man can't control nature and the place has been built at the wrong place ...

If any of these storms, I am going to be in college till x-mas. I do like them in a way but do not like it when we've had a series of storms like in 04.

UH60,

You are lucky for having not to deal with this storms. I myself have to deal with school being canceled, and other stuff because of this storm. I feel bad for the Gustav victims for this reason.

We all live on a living planet. If it's not hurricanes, which btw, we get all the aftermath in Oklahoma of western Gulf hurricanes, it's tornadoes for us, or wild fires, california, earthquakes, snowstorms in the NE.

You live in the most meteorologically diverse nation in the world. We all deal with weather/earth issues.

Looks for the moment like Josephine is mostly going to fizzle out in the Atlantic. I doubt it will even get above a tropical storm.

Ike is going to be nasty for somebody - looks like it's going to be someone in the Gulf.
