The Feel Of Hunger.

Fri Sep 05, 2008 2:47 pm

Most people are well to do & never starve.few others fast on certain occassions....But has anyone ever felt hunger & not having food around,it could be on a trip & not having food around.

It has a weird feel.I experienced it during my aviation college days when I delebritely remained hungry by skipping lunch so I could save for my fees,it was tough but a challenge.....Today I'm not able to do that ...Thought about those poor folks that starve because there is not enough food in their grasp.

Maybe one day the world will never have a starving individual anywhere.

I was at a point once where I would miss meals . I did not have the money to afford to drive my car to work, pay rent ,tuition and eat very well. It was not pleasant , I feel very sorry for hungry families who I have see around the world... starvation must be a horrible horrible way to die.

I have made my kids fast for 24 hours before, just to show them how it feels.

The problem is that it lacked the sinking feeling of helplessness and desperation felt by hunger victims. I never got that bad even when I was going " hungry" , I always knew my paycheck would come on friday and I could buy some food again.

Yes , that is correct. I have in the past thought about taking my kids on a survival trip . I am thinking about it again. Just spend about a week out doors , rationing food and water and letting them see what it is like. Your post reminded me of it ,, thanks

It is indeed sad that corruption forces some to starve.

Fasting is a part of my religious observations at least once a month for a day. It doesn't begin to compare to involuntary hunger though. I did spend about a month where I was unable to eat much beyond liquids due to illness. It was pretty awful. In college things were tight. I never starved. I had several small miracles which kept me going. Several times I did some volunteer work and was unexpectedly given left over food as a thank you. I spent a month living off of giant cinnamon rolls left over from a church event. To this day I have no idea how I lived on less than $600 a month. Rent, utilities, textbooks, tuition, transportation how I stretched it out so far I don't know.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

Hell, I rarely 'get' hungry..and frequently have to remind myself to eat..particularly lunch. While I love food...I rarely miss it when it's not around. Of course, this is on a day to day basis...not over a long period of time.

Withholding nutrition from a child could constitute child neglect in many states. I see you point..but I woudn't brag about it. Hopefully, they don't mention it at show and tell!

I used to not eat lunch at school, but usually I would have breakfast. I need to go to Feed My Starving Children again sometime.

Good point , Dont think the old " Dad made us drink our own urine" ... would go over to well. Big grin

I can not make it that tough , I will have to of course bring " backpack" food and just work on rationing it. I think It will be good for them to spend a few days roughing it.

One of the big down sides to our lives is that we have too much. I know its crazy , but its hard to raise kids and teach them the value of things when we basically have everything we need and can get it so easy. I worry very much about my kids learning to value the things that I provide for them. It is difficult to tell them about the sacrifice it took to get where we are. Not only my sacrifice but the sacrifice of so many other people who built this country and endured tremendous hardship to do it.

As their father this is my responsibility , and one that I have not done a very good job at. I get complacent and lazy sometimes , it is just easy to get them things and go out to dinner or just do the easy thing . I need to work harder at teaching them the value of things.

My kids have never gone hungry ... in 16 years they to my knowledge have ever missed a meal or had to do with out. Some may say it is a good thing , but is it ? The real lessons I have learned in life were during times when we were poor , and the times when I was hungry. The impressions that have lasted in me seeing the poor people in the Honduran jungle and the slums of Tapachula ... people as tough as nails and happy with the most meager of blessings. The success of our country has its curse as well, generations of soft children who lack the experience of true need , and the motivation it can instill.

12 , 14 , 16 ... I am not worried about that too much . I guess my biggest worry would be one of them getting hurt .. like a broken leg or arm while we are in the wilderness . That would be about it , but I have some feild trianing so I am sure I could handle it.

Had that eliminated when I was younger---they thought it was a blood sugar thing (as I recall).
I'm 6' and 180....and work out every day---so it's not like I'm emaciated or anything.
I just forget to eat a lot. And even as a kid I didn't 'snack' like most others.

When I eat..I try to eat healthy---or at least what I think is healthy.

I had breakfast with a client yesterday...and come to think of it...that was it.

The meal I try not to miss is lunch....which I'll head out to in a bit.

It would also help if I could cook-----I was not blessed with that DNA.

I'd dont' weigh myself but once a week--maybe....but yes. I tend to flucuate between 175-180.
When I first started my own practice, I was working 75 or so hours a week...my dietary habits were horrible....I kicked down to about 165 and didn't feel very good (exhausted, anxious, and obviously not eating). That's when I realized that while I wouldn't classify my eating habits as an eating disorder...I needed to make more of an effort to eat on a semi regular schedule.

That lasted about a month.

When I do get hungry...it's usually for something specific...Mexican food, Italian food, etc.

Quoting HAWK21M (Reply 12):

I gotcha on that. When I moved into my new place, I had a fairly elaborate kitchen installed---and then went out and purchased high end cookware (All-Clad) and appliances (Kitchen Aid) thinking this would inspire me.

That lasted about a month, too.

My culinary ability is limited to making dinner reservations.

That would be 79-80 kgs...not a big fluctuation then.

I'm 5ft 10" & 75kgs....But every time I work out I've noticed the weight increasing slightly,presumingly muscle gain.

Working nights also helps me keep within weight limits.
