Best & Bad Cover Songs...

Mon Sep 08, 2008 1:46 pm

Personally I'm not a big fan of cover songs, but there are some exeptions :

Some notable covers of American and British songs done by Norwegian artists. 3 good ones and one bad one....

a-ha - Crying in the rain ( by Carole King, made famous by the Everly Brothers )

a-ha - # 9 dream ( cover of a Lennon classic )

Kurt Nilsen and Willie Nelson - Lost Highway ( American classic made famous by Hank Williams )

A bad cover ( but that is my opinion )

Venke Knutson and Kurt Nilsen - When the Stars Go Blue ( Ryan Adams song )

The worst cover EVER: Madonna's American Pie:

This may be sacrilege but I like Far Corporation's Stairway to Heaven:

It's My Life by No Doubt (original by Talk Talk) is another good one:

You want a bad cover, I'll give you a bad cover:

One Toke Over The Line as done on the Lawrence Welk Show:

Here's one of my favorite covers, the James Taylor Quartet's instrumental version of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love

How about the Bing Crosby "Hey Jude" album? now that is a stinker.

There are several covers of Barry Sadler's "Ballad of the Green Barrets" I think one of the best was done by Heidi Bruhl (in German) in 1966.

It's kind of hard to beat a song about drugs being sung on a show that is the epitome of squeaky clean TV.

That's actually not half bad. Bing is one of the few artists that could pull off a reworking of a pop/rock 'n roll song. Frank Sinatra did some pretty swinging covers as well:

Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel):

Something (The Beatles):

I hang out a polka club every Friday and I will say that drugs are probably far and few between, but drinking and polka go hand and hand. If you ever look at any collection of older polka albums the amount of albums with drinking on the cover is staggering. To find a polka album without at least one song about drinking may be impossible.

First great cover is The Cat Empire doing Hotel California in French!

Next comes William Shatner doing a cover of Common People by pulp. Maybe I'm crazy but I love it. Ben Folds produced it so I think that helped a lot. Just promise me you won't knock it until you've heard it.

The final great cover is by Ben Folds himself covering Such Great Heights by The Postal Service. All I can say is that if you love ad hoc percussion and blankets it pianos this is the song for you.

Other great covers in my opinion are:
Lazy Susan-Are You Old Enough (Dragon)
Grinspoon-The Drugs Don't Work (The Verve)
End of Fashion-Quicksand (David Bowie)
David Grey-Say Hello Wave Goodbye (Soft Cell)

As far as bad covers go I do my best to forget them. The only one I can think of is I Love Rock and Roll by Britney Spears.

Finally anyone claims that someone covered Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley I will scream. If this statement confuses anyone check Wikipedia.

Kris

Not a great cover bit speaking of polka.

Amen to that! I love Madonna but covering a song like American Pie was one epic mistake. What the hell was she thinking?

His cover of "Rocket Man" is better because it at least has some humor value.....

The "If I Were A Carpenter" Carpenters tribute album isn't half bad. We played it a lot at the college radio station I worked at around that time. Throw in the fact that Rolling Stone at the time gave it a four star review (back when RS reviews meant something) and you've really got a classic 90s alternative album.

Worst Cover...Aerosmith singing The Beatles 'Come Together'.

I can't stand a band that tries to cover a song and do it just like the original.

Best Cover...Johnny Cash singing Nine Inch Nails 'Hurt', now thats how you do it!

The Only Living Boy in New York (Simon and Garfunkel) by EBTG

It Was a Very Good Year (Frank Sinatra) by Robbie Williams

It isn't exactly the same as Sadler's, but it is a similar theme and has the same tune.

Another favorite cover of mine is Social Distortion doing Kitty Wells' "Making Believe". It was on their 1992 Album "Somewhere between Heaven and Hell".

I normally wish all kinds of evil on anyone that even thinks about covering anything by Stevie Wonder, even if his version was a cover in itself, but I have to say that I love these covers!:

"Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing"

"My Cherie Amour"

"Knocks Me Off My Feet"

"As"

"Another Star" (well...kinda!)

Another Shatner classic Big grin

One of the best cover songs I love is "Total Eclipse of the heart" by Nicki French. But, that is my theme song. It is hard to do a good version of that song, but she pulled it off. An "okay" cover song is "Proud Mary" by CCR. Actually, I don't know which version came first, but I really like Tina's version more. CCRs is okay.

Now, the worst cover songs: Anything on American Idol save Melinda Doolittle singing "Have A Nice Day." That one song is fantastic. The rest will be playing in hell, I am sure...
