Apple Store/iPod Touch Exchange Question

Thu Sep 11, 2008 1:49 am

Yeah, I realize I should probably just ask in the Apple Store, but I'm on the road right now and I know there are a bunch of Apple fans here...

Anyway, my 5th generation iPod gave up the ghost late last week after being on life support for most of the past year.

I am an iPod addict and very unhappy without music, so I promptly visited my local Apple Store and was caught in the iPod Touch vs. iPod Classic delimma [I wasn't sure I'd dig the touchscreen interface instead of tactile feedback from the clickwheel].

The sales rep I talked to confirmed that if I indeed hated it, I could return it for only a 10% restocking fee (I didn't catch the number of days). So I left the proud owner of a 32GB iPod touch... I love the thing. It has solved problems I didn't even know I had.

But of course yesterday, a new generation of iPod touches was announced including one feature that I really thought was lacking -- tactile volume control.

Any idea (a) when they'll be in stores, and (b) if Apple will allow me to exchange (or return and quickly repurchase) my iPod touch for a new iPod touch.

Assuming that (b) is no; can I get Apple to issue a credit since it looks like the price for the 32GB model has dropped about $100?

Hi Lincoln,

I work for Apple so hopefully this answers your question nice and quickly.

"If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase, return it with the original receipt and original packaging within fourteen (14) calendar days of the date of purchase."

The same policy applies. If your store does not have stock, you can return for a refund and buy again when they do have stock, or request a Store Manager to extend the return period for you to save you being without an iPod.

Yes you can.

"Should Apple reduce its price on any Apple-branded product within fourteen (14) calendar days of the date of purchase, you may request a refund of the difference between the price paid and the current selling price. An original purchase receipt is required, and you must request your refund within fourteen (14) calendar days of the price reduction."

Any questions, PM me.

Speaking from the Touch, I got one recently and love it.

It works better in cities as you need a wifi signal for many of the features, but when you have wifi, amazing.

Even without, still great to use. Apple thought of everything in it...I would not hesitate to buy another.

Mine also had a small problem so I brought it in for service, without any questions they handed me a different refribushed one for free.

I bought one recently after 3 years of using a Philips HDD120, and I just love it. The only thing I miss is also the volume control but hey I can live with that. The design, the features, its worth every buck!

Just a follow up/postscript... I went in to my local Apple Store (Legacy Village in Lyndhurst, OH) this afternoon and in about 10 minutes, the majority of which was spent waiting for someone to become available to help me, I left with a 2nd Generation iPod Touch, and credit to my card for the price difference.

They were even generous enough to waive the restocking fee, without me asking and which I wasn't expecting at all (after all, there was nothing wrong with my 1st gen iPod Touch, it was entirely my choice to return/exchange it)

It's syncing my library now (experience tells me this will take about 3.5 hours or so) but based on what I've seen of it so far I love it -- they somehow managed to make it even smaller, lighter, round the edges, and cram volume control buttons and a built-in (albeit low fidelity) speaker into the package.

Just out of curiosity... is there any way to turn off audio playback through the speaker? I can think of times when this wouldn't really be desireable (on planes, trains, at the airport, or just about anywhere in public) but on a quick tour through the settings menu I didn't see this option anywhere.
