I like to monitor earthquakes as I live in an earthquake prone area, even felt a small one last evening. There are small ones happening around the globe all the time but I have never seen so many major earthquakes in one day.

Any geophysics heads on this board?

Yes 5 major earthquakes in one day.

There is a vast rumor going around Japan that the "Big One" that the Japanese government has been preparing for will hit THIS WEEKEND.

Japan has had its normal amount of level 1 and 2 earthquakes.
Japan Meteorlogical Agency Earthquake Tracking page

But the Tokai region which is between Osaka and Tokyo centered on Nagoya has not seen anything over a 1 (JMA Intensity scale) in quite a long time. Many seismologists determine that if one strikes it will happen off the coast somewhere between Nagoya and Shizouka City. The fault lines have not been very active there but records (this includes stories and diaries) show a pattern.

The RUMOR:
A Brazilian soothsayer stated that a major earthquake would hit the Tokai region of Japan on September 13th, 2008. This same soothsayer claimed that she foresaw and even wrote to the Indonesian, Thai and Malaysian PMs about the major earthquake and tsunami that hit in 2006. This same soothsayer also tried to warn the Japanese about the Kobe Earthquake.

Since the rumor about the Sept. 13th, 2008 earthquake arose, many housewives (including my own) have started preparing like never before for a large emergency. She had me cancel my plans for attending a Sports Festival at the school I work as well as the party afterwards. She also had me go shopping for extra first aid goods, 8 liters of water, a new emergency flashlight/radio/siren, canned foods, and gas for a portable stove. I am one for being prepared but I like to take science over a Brazilian Soothsayer.

Never the less, 5 major earthquakes in one day points to some major movement and some damn good soothsaying...even if the location is not in Tokai and 2 days early.

I just hope we're ready. We had our "BIG ONE" on July 24, as most of us here are used to the smaller 'so called' 5.0 quakes we get once or twice a month, but not many americans and japanese locals, myself included are prone to these stronger one we get every 2-3 years.

After the July 24th 6.8 mag. quake 80 miles from us, which caused very strong shaking and some extensive damage where I live, I have learned to get property insurance for my house, afterall, I never thought about a strong earthquake during my 3 years in Japan. Thankfully houses here are built similiar to the United States and could handle a good shakin'.

But as for the BIG ONE predicted for this weekend, we'll, I hope it doesn't hit up north, so good luck to y'all in the southern and central Japan area(s) if it DOES happen.

Just FYI, Japan normally gets quakes from 4.5 - 6.0 so a 5.4 quake is really nothing. What makes it up is that the quakes in Japan are fairly deep, usually 50 miles, sometimes almost 100 miles deep so a 5.5 quake with a 70 miles depth will result in ground rolling that we cannot feel, but it still remains major. I guess that's a good thing as it will not produce any deaths and they're pretty cool to experience from time to time.

Probably is a good thing.

If you really want to frighten yourself try the map at:
http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/qed/
You could convince yourself serially, that:
1. The San Andreas was about to let go.
2. The zone off Sumatera is going berserk.
3, Another Tokyo quake is on its way and
4. Anchorage will soon disappear, not to mention the Andes will fall into the Pacific.

With 4 and 5 intensity quakes, that probably means most stress is being released. Even if all the plates have suddenly accelerated, stress is being released. I would worry a bit more if there was a long period without any medium sized quakes. That would be ominous!

There are major (5+) earthquakes every day. Few hit inhabited areas though, most occur in the sea.
