'Muslim Massacre' Game Causes Uproar

Fri Sep 12, 2008 9:02 am

A VIDEO game made by an Australian man that encourages players to massacre Muslim people has caused international outrage.

Ok so this guy has created a game with crappy graphics which happens to encourage players to "massacre muslims". And this is creating a "huge uproar". Frankly, I had never even heard of this till I saw the local news on TV now.
I don't see how this is different from games like "Command and Conquer Generals" and the Splinter Cell series where some of the elements involve killing islamic terrorists etc.

I believe some programmers in the middle east somewhere have created games in which the goal is to kill Israeli soldiers and American GIs.

Extremism goes both way, I guess.

Ahh... I think he knew this was going to cause an uproar - so I guess he got exactly what he wanted.  Smile

Reminds me of a Danish game released back in the day, called "Mujaffa Spillet" ("The Mujaffa Game", lit.) where you were playing a stereotypical immigrant whose goal was to pimp his car, get "street cred" points and have sex with random prostitutes. Caused quite an uproar too - which I believe was exactly what it was designed for.

Come on... it's a GAME. I'm proud to know many Muslims who're able to just laugh and forget about it...

The Jyllands-posten drawings come to mind here...

That is true to a point and I deprecate both types as strongly as possible. However "games" like this are so awful they can taint the movement they ostensibly support.

Suppose you are OBL and you want to further your cause with a game. ONE (only one) of the plans would be to take Bush's bully pulpit speeches and cobble them into something so extreme that he actually loses support.

One another thread, Nav has been commenting on some of the strategies run by the British (and by the Germans) in WWII. Some of the most successful operations were the exact inverse of what you might have expected.

I think this could damage Bush much more than Muslims. But who knows what the purpose really was!

He thinks that I think he thinks that .........

My personal problem is that by calling it Muslim Massacre, as opposed to something like Terrorist Massacre, is that it groups together terrorists with the vast majority of Muslims who are good hearted people, people who would never commit any violent acts. I don't feel that this is acceptable. Judging all Muslims based on a fringe group of extremists is as pointless as judging the United States based on the KKK and Nambla.

Programmers have been making "shoot em up games" since game consoles have been invented. Granted, the name of Muslim Massacre shouldn't have been used but IMHO people just need to calm down and get over these stupid little trivial things. Most all of the people that play these games know that they are just that, GAMES, and nothing more.

Let me give you a contrast to this situation. Said game designer makes a game called JEWISH MASSACRE....

There is nothing trivial about this. What if the game was going around as a hooded KKK moron and burning as many crosses on lawns as possible? Or perhaps the following example...

Exactly. The problem isn't that the game specifically targets Moslems, it is that it targets a real group of people. It is sort of like when that moron created a game that mimicked the Columbine shootings.

Pretty nonsensical game. Obviuosly played by guys with too much time on their hands.

I do wonder however if the shoe was on the other foot and a game called "Infidel Massacre" came out, would such a game receive any public outrage from islamic newspapers?

Hezbollah made a video game a few years ago where you have to kill Israeli soldiers. I'm pretty sure the quality/gameplay is crap though.

So, you don't think the civilized world can claim moral superiority over extremists that support murder in the name of their chosen belief? I don't care if it's an Islamic terrorist or a pro-life abortion clinic bomber, we in the civilized world, do have moral superiority.

What makes this game different from Call to Duty 4? The name? The plot? How about the cartoons shown to children in the Middle East depicting characters being killed by Isreali troops? (sorry, no link at this time...I'm at work and don't want that trash trying to make it through the firewall).

It's easy to be outraged.

I doubt we would say calm down about "Jewish massacre" or "n***er massacre..."

To justify my 2nd remark above, I think there are many parallels between the American perception of blacks 1850-1950 and muslims 1970 to present. We blame them for crimes, we start unspeakable rumors about them and occasionally we embark on expeditions to kill large numbers of "muslim mischief makers" because we see that as our right... worldwide.

There has been a lynch mob mentality against Muslims since 9/11 and this game is part of that. I don't give it a free pass.

No worries - I had to think about it a little too. Big grin

Quoting Flighty (Reply 20):

It's obviously meant as a joke - and people make fun of jews, christians, black people and everything else on a daily basis without getting ripped a new one, because it's really nothing horrible (and we SHOULD be able to not take ourselves too seriously) - People wouldn't have stayed calm if it was called Jewish Massacre because of World War II. Name one incident where another group comitted genocide on muslim people that this game could resemble?

The graphics are stupidly simple, and it's obvious that the game has been made to 1) make one group of people laugh (which has been accomplished) and 2) make another group angry/horrified/offended (obviously accomplished too). No one really wants to wipe out the muslim people of the world, and the characters you're supposed to shoot in the games aren't your average muslim guy, but stereotypical terrorists. And if people think that ALL muslims are Bin Laden lookalikes, they need to get out more.

I'd like to know how many muslims here on a.net are actually offended by this?  Smile I asked my Indonesian friend (muslim) to play it and wanted to know her opinion, and the only complaint she had was that she failed in the damned game.  Silly

But... I agree that the wording is unfortunate, but is probably made this way on purpose to get a rise out of people...

There are games like this for just about any group you can imagine. I remember seeing a Neo-Nazi group advertising (using more colorful language) a game where you kill Jewish people, Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics for points...kind of like Grand Theft Auto. It's disgusting that video games are being used like this, but there's very little we can do to stop it. Someone out there is probably working on a Kill the (Insert Group Here) sequel as I write this. What's even more terrible is that there is apparently a market for games like these.

The victims and people in the surrounding area would beg to differ. Trivializing their losses and then proclaiming moral superiority isn't a great way to gain their respect or obedience-if that's what you're after.
