Do Mousetraps Really Work

Sun Sep 14, 2008 9:50 pm

The last year my house has a few times invaded by mice. Now it seems like this cute little bastards are quite clever animals. It's almost like they know how an ordinary spring-loaded bar mousetrap works.

I just place these traps because I found them somewhere. There must be other ways to get rit them like poison. It's just I don't want any rotting body of a mouse somewhere in my house. Anyone knows a good method?

Thanx in advance

get a cat. lol, I have two and during the summer I almost always find a dead mouse, bird, or some small animal on my porch. Of course that is outside but they have killed one or two inside my house before. Pretty creapy, lol.

I can live in the country without a dog, but have found, like another neighbor mentioned to me, that I cant live without a cat or two. Every few weeks I get a mouse invasion. Poison is the way to go but you're right about the smell. I've heard there is a poison that decomposes the body very quickly, made by Shell. I haven't seen any. Those live traps are a waste of time.

Another thing is to close any openings they might be using. They have a soft skeleton and are able to squeeze through very small openings.

use chocolate - its sticky and harder to get off than a piece of cheese - also apparently mice prefer chocolate to cheese anyway.

Bacon is great... Cook it just long enough to smell good...

Snakes are good too, but if you don't like cats, you probably won't like snakes...  Wow!

I use warfarin out in my workshop. It doesn't kill them right away, so they usually leave and go die someplace else...

make sure you are placing the traps well. From what i know, it is best to place them along walls, in tight spaces so that they basically have no choice but to go over them.

I live in an apartment building in Queens, so Mice are a constant battle (part of is it because my neighbor is a flippin pig). We have exhausted plugging up every single hole that we could think of in the kitchen which helped somewhat. There was still one hole we couldn't find though and instead of ripping the cabinets out, we used a combination of snap traps and this puppy....

http://www.victorpest.com/sonic_pest_control.htm

Now I wasn't a believer when I ordered it online but I was desperate so I figured, hey what the hell. I plugged it in and within 4 hours I caught 3 of these little bastards and (Knock on wood) I haven't seen one since.....This was 7 months ago.

So hey, give it a shot, otherwise just put out the snap traps (with peanut butter or Rolo which is what we use) and just clean em up when ya catch em.

They do work really well however you have to get the mousetraps with the big yellow plastic piece to make the trap mechanism more sensitive and a bigger area. This was taught to me by a exterminator that helped me catch 3 mouses last winter as there is a slight mouse problem here in Western Nevada.
This is the one you need to get.
Big version: Width: 190 Height: 190 File size: 14kb

Use old fashioned peanut butter and drip a little of the peanut oil on to the peanut butter they love it. I was also told they love dry dog food.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Mike

This one I was using before the exterminator told me it wasn't that effective as the little mouses would eat the bait off without triggering the trap.

Big version: Width: 109 Height: 204 File size: 6kb

that is your cats way of showing they like you! a lot of them will bring dead animals home because it's a way to show you gratitude for taking care of them. they hunt and bring you food since you do it for them. no joke!

Toasted bread covered with hazelnut-chocolate-spread (something like nutella) as a bait. That calls every mouse into the traps.

I actually tried the spring-loaded device. Caught the mouse alright, but partially. This little thing was squealing - so I had to shoot it.

Since then, a carpet snake calls the attic home, having grown from 50cm to now over 3.5m (that's 9ft). My mother has a collection of skins she shed over the years, as well as 20-odd hatched eggs.....

No silly - they go out around the area collecting cheese from traps  Smile

Back on topic, I've never had cause to use one, but my wife had a couple of mice that she caught with a "live" trap, and drove them 10 miles away before letting them go. They didn't come back.

We killed a mouse last year with a mouse trap. They do work, but you must place the cheese so that the mouse must step on the button.

We also found rat-traps (larger mouse traps) to be more efficient...

Since we have a cat, we have few problems  Wink

Cats work well. One of my boys proudly flopped a dead one in front of me the other day while watching a movie.

Traps work as well. I've used peanut butter. Also, iv'e used the humane traps and they also work. Every day day i let the buggers loose in a field down the street untill there were no more mice in the house. I figure the house we had was built on a field where they lived so it's not their fault looking for shealter and food.  Wink

We had a very persistent little bugger at work. Cheese - yum yum. A Hungarian lady who worked for me said try salami. Well that was a dumb idea!

SNAP. In about 10 minutes, she had her mouse.

It seems that the Aus salami is sufficiently stringy that the poor mouse does not stand a chance as it tries to retrieve it from the trap.

The spring triggered traps do work if you do it right:
- Put cheese in, but squish it in the little hole until it is very hard to get out
- Load the trap that it takes very little to trigger it (To the very edge of the metal)

I've probably caught 20 mice like that.

That is the best advice. Not only do they kill rodents, but the rodents smell them and stay away.

For mice, probably. I hear they are really good for rats, however.

Eww, when I was a kid we had a mouse problem once, and we bought these sticky mouse pad things that attracted mice and they would stick to them and couldn't get free.

They would start screaming in mice voice and I'd feel bad so I'd take them outside and try to peel them off with a stick. They always ended up legless and I just didn't deal with it anymore.

BLAH!

I agree with the cat recommendation. They work wonders and are in most case quite happy and proud to show you their prizes. A bonus is the cats have a built in way to dispose of the rodent bodies

Actually, that is not necessarily the case with domestic cats. While they always have the prey drive, they don't know to eat their kill unless taught.

Hmm, I guess the cats that wifey and I have had over the past 27 years must have been teaching each other how to have a snack. Every now and then we catch them with a tail hanging out of their mouth before a nifty gulp removes the evidence. wee have always had a minimum of 3 cats and the vast majority have taken care of the carcasses

Since we moved away from the swamp the critter population is way down but the odd visitor from he woods still has found it's way inside.

Rat Zapper Battle Station

". . .our Battle Station, will allow you to monitor trap activity without checking individual Rat Zappers. Our Battle Station allows up to 16 Rat Zappers to be monitored from a single location and you can use multiple monitor panels in close proximity to monitor many more Rat Zappers if necessary."

TECHNICAL INFO
Features that make the Battle Station robust:

1) The wireless transmitters send a status signal to the monitor panel every hour. Because of this, if the power goes out and the monitor panel resets, it will still let you know if there are any rodents in Rat Zappers just one hour after the power comes back on.

2) If the monitor panel does not receive a status signal from a transmitter in a four hour period, it blinks to let you know which transmitter has lost contact. This feature ensures that you won't lose track of a Rat Zapper that was just placed behind a washing machine or a fork lift.

3) The wireless transmitters use 2 ordinary alkaline AAA batteries that last for several years.

Both my future wife and I are going to live together in a 30 square meters (my current)apartment as soon as we are married. We want to see how we can cope with that and than consider taking a cat. Actually we both love cats, so that's going to happen sooner or later anyway.
