Best Dressed World Leader's Spouse

Mon Sep 15, 2008 5:09 pm

Hi Everyone,

In the spirit of starting threads in which we don't kill each other, how about this one?

Who is the best dressed wife of a world leader?

I nominate Queen Rania of Jordan. She's smart, beautiful, and not afraid to say what she thinks.

She totally blows away the Western stereotypes of Islamic nations and the role of women in them.

If really want to see a woman that blows Western stereotypes of Arab and Muslim nations, do a quick Google search for Haifa Wehbe.

She's not married to a political leader though...far from it.  Smile

Wow you really weren't kidding!!!

Bashir Assad doesn't seem to have done too badly for himself:

He's a mystery to me. He's really a doctor and his wife was in investment banking..Seemingly not your typical "dictator"

There are plenty of others but she's probably the most famous.

Because of her iconic status, Pepsi recruited her for their commercials in the Arab world while Coca Cola had been recruiting another well known star for their commercials. You can find them on Youtube.

His older brother, Basil al-Assad was being groomed to succeed his father, but he died in a car accident in 1994, so his younger brother, Bashar the ophthalmologist, was next in line.

I find Middle Eastern politics fascinating. Living in the US it's hard to get a real insight on what's really going on there.

I remember reading an interview with Queen Rania in which she mentioned that King Hussein dresses up in disguises and goes around Jordan trying to understand what the common citizen goes through and exposes corruption.

Imagine being a civil servant and harassing this "civilian" who turns out to be the King! If there is one thing I admire about the Islamic World is their swift sense of justice, no screwing around like here.

I think you mean King Abdullah II, Hussein's son. King Hussein died in 1999 and Abdullah II succeeded the throne.

King Abdullah II is an interesting character. He's pretty laid back and quite adventurous liking many outdoor sports. He did a program about Jordan with I believe the Travel Channel a few years ago and it was pretty much as if he was a local.

I believe King Abdullah II even did a short cameo on Startrek in the mid 90's. I believe he was not officially credited for it though.

Back before he became King, he was pretty much a normal guy, like you and me. The same even with King Hussein. I mean, which King flies himself on an L-1011 or 727 to a state visit, or even makes a short performance with the same L-1011 in an Air Show, like during the 1987 (?) RAT?

My bad, I meant King Abdullah II as one of the posters mentioned. I know about King Hussein, he came to the Mayo Clinic for treatment in his last days and if I remember tried to broker a peace deal between the Israelis and Palestinians while Clinton was still President.

Speaking of Queen Rania and stereotypes, she launched a Youtube channel earlier this year dedicated to combating stereotypes:

A peace deal was reached between the Israelis and Palestinians while Bill Clinton was the President, and Hussein was a strong force behind the scenes. He was also an ace fighter pilot and well loved in the amateur radio community.

That said, Abdullah has been an excellent influence in the international community, from his attempts at peace in his own region to his pro-active role in helping rebuild New Orleans after Katrina.
