Price Of Gas Where You Are At?

Mon Sep 15, 2008 6:48 pm

With the passing of IKE and accusations of price gouging at the pump, I am curious what the price of gas is around the US and all over the world. Here in Vero Beach it varies from $3.89 to 3.95. I have heard up in Knoxville, TN it has jumped to 4.99.

Gas prices are all over. At one station its $3.61/3.71/3.81 and 3/4 of a mile down the road its $3.49/3.59/3.69. Hopefully in a week or so once this Ike nonsense is over its gonna drop like a rock thanks to oil at 96 dollars a barrel.

The major oil companies here in NL publish a recommended retail price almost every day.

BP is quoting € 1.625 a litre, Esso and Shell € 1.63, Texaco € 1.635 and Total € 1.64 a litre 95 octane. The average being € 1.631. These are the maximum prices you'd expect to pay when filling up along a motorway. Other petrol stations will offer a 'discount' of up to € 0.08 a litre.

Now one US liquid gallon = 3.79 liters and € 1.00 is approximately € 1.42. This equates to $ 7.70 a US gallon here. Easily the most expensive petrol in Europe  grumpy  grumpy

Oil is down nearly $5 right now in the US lowest its been since Febuary of this year. With the global economy slowing down and IKE did not do as much damage to the oil industry as expected. Hopefully in the next few months oil can go down below $85 and that is when we will see real relief in prices. Who would have thought 3-5 years ago that we would be happy seeing $90 oil prices.
Here in Metro DC prices are still pretty high compared to what they where in Miami before I left for DC a month ago. Paid 3.75 for regular a few days ago.

Yesterday, I saw a Valero station in Essington selling diesel at $4.19 and another station (a Sunoco) down the road selling it for $4.59.

Pretty well much what it is at this point.

Gas took almost half a year to go down from 145.9 to 138.9 but can jump 10 cents/liter within a matter of hours? Bullshit!

Oil companies or whoever are running out excuses and the public isn't buying (the excuses) anymore.

Anyway, it jumped from 138.4 to 147.9 per liter on friday. I wonder how many months its gonna take down to crawl down and reflect the actual value of a liter?

Was $4.41 when oil was at its highest.

Also could someone explain why before the hurricane hit some places had already jacked up the price around where I live from 3.56 or so to 3.83 and more?

Some gas stations reacted slower but eventually 87 octane was OVER 3.89 everywhere.

We've seen worse gulf hurricanes than this and gasoline has never usually jumped this much from one day to the next. This is some ridiculous local speculation "fueled" by the OMG a storm is coming to the Gulf!!!!! from the news media.

If everytime they came up with these stupid hikes people would only spend a few bucks at the pump to drive for a day or two instead of filling up the whole tank, gas companies/and the ahole speculators would get the point.

Its a good question and sometimes I dont get it. But for the most part its just like why gas in New York City is more expensive than gas in Jacksonville. Larger cities have a higher cost of living. Also rent and taxes etc.. in Miami would be more than they are in Orlando. You can have a gas station in Southwest Miami on SW8th and 82nd street have prices around 3.70 but than the stations in South Beach are way over $4.00 for regular. Its all about location. I remember when oil was at the $140 mark there was gas at the South Beach BP for almost $5.00 a gallon for .93

Good to see that BC seems to have the highest fuel prices in Canada. Even if you take off the 2.5 cent/liter carbon tax we have, we're still quite a bit higher then everyone else.

Rumour is that it's supposed to drop 10 cents tonight. Not keeping my fingers crossed though.

Strange. BC's gas prices used to be consistently high, however always lower that those in Newfoundland and roughly in par with Quebec. Apparently it isn't the case anymore - I paid $ 1.37 per litre at Petro Canada just outside YUL last Friday.

The situation here in YXU is slowly improving - as of this morning, gas prices are slightly under $ 1.30 per litre again.

We do have a 2.5 cent per liter carbon tax in place as of July this year, but still, the prices in BC have gotten ridiculously high. Petro Can's little incident with one of their Edmonton refineries last month caused a shortage at the Petro Can stations in the interior of BC, so I'm sure that that has something to do with it (even though they claim it doesn't).

RE: Price Of Gas Where You Are At?

The biggest reason gas jumped this week was because many people panicked due to the storm and filled up just to fill up. That drove demand and usage up... some station ran out.. even more causing panic and driving demand and price up even more. Had well all just remand calm... filled up only if we truly needed it, you would have seen little to no change.

You'll forgive me if I don't buy that. A few years ago, sure I would have agreed, but not any more. A difference of 10 cents per liter (thats an extra $5 per fill up on my Golf) and up to 13 cents per liter in some places, which is a record in Canada is pure gouging, plain and simple.

There have been other "crisis's" that have boosted the price of gas at the pump but this time I honestly believe that the oil companies (or someone) were just using this as another in the long list of excuses to bring in some extra cash as the price of oil is going down and eventually the pump price has to reflect that.

I personally believe the state and federal taxes should be dropped during this period of insanity. Our national debt is already beyond belief, who cares if it gets a little more outrageous. Sarcasm....
