Poll: If You Could Go On One Cruise Ship?

Thu Sep 18, 2008 9:42 pm

Hi,

Just wondering if you could go on one cruise ship today which one would it be (either for a cruise/trip or just to explore etc.). For myself it would have to be the Queen Mary 2. Sure I think it's kinda too big but it's still the largest/most luxurious I think and it does the transatlantic route which would be cool (I always wanted to go to the US by boat/steamer etc.).

So I guess my question is if you could explore any cruise ship today for free which one would it be?

Any comments etc. welcome,

Many thanks,

Pierre.

Then book a cabin and go..personally I like the small sailing vessels from the Star Clipper Lines, and Windstar.

RCCL's Freedom of the Seas is just a few feet smaller in dimension, but thousands larger in tonnage. With that being said, I would choose Freedom as RCCL has shown me amazing cruises time after time. On the other hand, QM2 (and family) just does not appeal to me. [opinion] It's a horrendously ugly and "unmodern" looking ship and segregation isn't something I'm fond of. [/opinion]

PS - Oasis of the Seas launching in less than a year will yank all titles away from QM2!  Wink

I've always wanted to go on a cruise, and next year I'll finally be going on my first one ...

I'll be on the MS Veendam (was orignally booked on the MS Ryndam but we had to re-schedule) and, although not the grandest or largest ship out there, I am quite excited about it.

My absolute dream cruise would be a westbound Trans Atlantic, just for the nostalgia of crossing the great ocean to the New World and seeing the Statue of Liberty as so many people did coming to America. I'm kinda torn between the QM2 and QE2 though. Although the QM2 is by far much larger and luxurious, the QE2 does have a lot of history under her belt.

If anyone is interested, all three of Cunards ships have bridgecams so you can track their position ...... www.cunard.com

I hate to be so picky but is the Queen Mary 2 considered a cruise ship? I always thought she is an ocean liner like Queen Elizabeth 2. I'd probably choose QM2 as well on a westbound transatlantic crossing.

I never even realized there was a difference. Interesting. I would assume that an oceanliner may be somewhat bigger and specifically built for longer voyages at sea where as a cruise ship would be smaller (easier to get in and out of ports) and more for just shorter hops. Perhaps the amenities on board are also tailored differently?

Anyone able to shed some light on this. Would be interesting to know.

I would call the QM2 a "crossover" to use an automotive term. on the one hand she's built for transatlantic crossings, on the other hand, she also does cruises.

IMO the last true ocean liner to be built was the QE2

I thin if i could go on any cruise ship, it would be one of the Radisson ships, they're small, intimate, and so luxurious.

I like both. I have yet to go on the QM2 but alot of my friends have and said its an amazing ship and they have been on most. For a traditional luxury experience then its certainly the way to go.

For a more relaxed fun ship with less pomp then the Oasis of the Seas will be amazing. Im booked on the inaugural for Dec 2009. Cant wait.

Here's a recent (August) video of her construction in Turku. The Oasis project manager seems to be at relative ease, his project now running on schedule.

I think it would be cool to check out Oasis of the Seas. However if I could only go on one, I would have to agree with AirCop.

A family member did a WindStar cruise around the med as well as a cruise around Tahiti on the Paul Gauguin and said it was fabulous. The ships are a bit smaller so you have access to smaller ports of call. And given the price level, you lose the buffet chasers.

I wouldn't. It is too structured. I like to do my own thing. My mom is leaving today on a cruise to Southeast Alaska. If I were going to Southeast, I would rather take the Alaska Marine Highway and jump off at different towns and spend a few days.

Titanic . . . it's a cruise ship, it's been found (people could "go on it today" - not just in theory) and it'd be a great exploration . . . maybe even come back w/some souvenirs . . .   , actually, that'd be akin to grave-robbin', so forget that . . . but it would be something to see that.

I think a ship like the QM2 is far too large. I prefer smaller ships with very personal service. My personal favorite line is Regent (formerly Raddison Seven Seas). I also like Silver Sea and Sea Bourne. I have also found that Celebrity and Holland America provide an experience that is certainly a step above the mainstream lines like RCI and Carnival for not too much more. I really enjoy cruising, but just do not enjoy being herded about like a head of cattle. Personal preference, of course. Some like the big ships for their amenities and party atmosphere.

It should also be noted the 3 luxury cruise lines I listed first have FREE alcohol. Sometimes you pay more upfront for finer cruises, but it ends up coming out in the wash by the time you pay all the ship board fees. Just a thought...

Hi,

This is just to say a quick thanks for the replies etc. The smaller cruise ships etc. definitely look like a more relaxed time (I didn't really even think many existed until now).

But I guess if it really came to it and it was free I wouldn't be picky. For those who like the old ocean liner thing I would suggest if ever in St.Nazaire (where the QM2 was built) in France there's an excellent museum "Escale Atlantic" which is in built there in the old submarine base. It's basically a full size interior of an old transatlantic liner (I think the Normandie) with engine rooms, bed rooms, even the promenade deck at night with stars/wind effects etc. Then theres' the dining room too where you can also get food etc. served on Normandie dishes etc. It's not the real thing but it definitely felt like I was back in 1890 for a while(!)

Many thanks for the new info etc.,

Pierre

It's not the most luxurious cruise ship, not by a long shot. If you look closely, most of what you think is exotic wood is in fact plastic.

The most luxurious one is possibly SS Europa, world's only cruise ship that is rated 5*+

I don't think you can drag me on any cruise ship (nothing against ships, but a cruise ship is just a swimming prison in my book), but if I had to pick one, I would choose one of those Hurtigruten ships or a Russian icebreaker.

Put me down for any of the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's larger ships (i.e. Navigator, Voyager, as well as Freedom, Liberty, and Independence.)

Also, how about waiting about a year and wait for RCL to launch Oasis in December 2009. It's supposed to be the largest ship ever built...

The "Big U" back in the day - I've looked at the decaying condition of the S.S. United States on a pier in South Philadelphia for years, and have dreamed of being a first class passenger on her for a transatlantic crossing back in her heyday. Such a shame - she is in such decrepit condition now.  cry

When they finish building it:

So large you can land passenger aircraft on the deck!

I first heard about this years ago... Sure looked interesting...
It was so big that it wouldn't actually call into ports... rather smaller ships would dock internally within the ship that would then make their way to the ports while the 'mothership' continues sailing on its way.
