Sun Sep 21, 2008 4:29 pm

...the scandal surrounding the sale of polluted milk is widening throughout China and Hong Kong..now reports speak about more than 13.000 children put into hospitals ,many of which are seriously ill.
Industry and food usually don't go well together too well..

That is a really incredible number. Are there any fatalities?

As we import more and more food from over seas it will not be long until this happens over here.

When ever possible i only buy local or made in Canada/USA/Europe. We have our problems but the food industry is not totally inept and corrupt as is seems to be in other parts....

|ncidentially the chemical in the tainted milk is the same that was in the tainted pet food scandal from a couple of years ago.

And yes some babies have died.

You have to stop and ask yourself is the cost savings worth the risks. Remember last year we also had the lead paint kids toy scandal.

What the f.uck has Melamine to be done in baby-milk ????
Food industry and processed food side-effects are most likely the third-biggest killers after heart-deseases ,alcohol and drugs..
There is a clear and proven link between processed food ,add-on's used in processed food and cancer. But food lobby is very, very powerful-nearly as powerful as the weapons-lobby.

I have the slight suspicion that some ex-CEOs and managers of said company will have an appointment with some Chinese cop pointing an AK-47 at their heads in some sandpit shortly.
Others will probably spend a long time in a Chinese labour camp.

Melamine is being used to fool standard food tests into giving higher protein results.
The company apparently streched the milk powder with some up to now unknown substances and then added Melamine to fool the food inspectors to show that it has the protein content of regular milk.

Quote:

Melamine is sometimes unethically added to food products in order to increase the apparent protein content. Standard tests such as the Kjeldahl and Dumas tests estimate protein levels by measuring the nitrogen content, so they can be misled by adding nitrogen-rich compounds such as melamine. [10]

I believe the Chinese government executed the head of their equivalent of our FDA last year for taking bribes from drug companies to overlook defects in Chinese manufactured drugs.

They first water down the raw milk and then add the melamine in to raise the protein level so it shows normal.

The standard laboratory tests for protein content just measure the nitrogen content of the sample (since nitrogen is an element which makes up aminoacids, which in turn make up proteins).
Melamine also contains a big amount of nitrogen and fools the tests into showing more proteins than really exist in the sample.
To actually measure the protein content, more complicated (and expensive) test are necessary, which can't be fooled as easily.

Basically what the milk producers have done is to cheat the food inspectors.

So, they couldn't get away with poisoning people from other countries with their crap, so they decided to poison their own people and give the good stuff to people from other countries...

Very nice -- you know, morally that's actually worse than poisoning everybody else and keeping the good food for your own people; countries are supposed to put their own population above the value of other populations... to poison your own people is really bad.

A lot of Nestle products are being pulled from the shelves of neighboring countries, including here in Hong Kong. . . we can only hope that this gets resolved soon. What's sad is that it's children/babies being affected the most from all this.

There was something on the radio here last week and the two issues as to why powdered milk was used were 1) it was seen by the chinese as "modern" and the done thing to do and 2) many many women have to work, sometimes far from home, and there isn't the chance to breastfeed.

Looking at another wiki, there were problems last year with pet foods and animal feed also being adulterated with melamine

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_protein_export_contamination

The count is now up to 53000 kids being ill with 13000 in hospital.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7628622.stm

Mr Wen also threatened harsh punishments for those found responsible for the contamination.

"Public confidence can only be rebuilt on merciless punishment," he said. "None of those companies lacking professional ethics or social morals will be let off."

As already alluded to.... bullets in the head?

It makes you wonder how they thought they'd get away with it. It's not as if baby milk isn't going to be seen as the common factor in lots of sick babies.

Or 30 years of hard labour in some Chinese Gulag camp in the Gobi desert.

The malamine was specifically added to fool the standard tests used by the food control departments. To detect melamine, you'll need a suspicion first and then specialised tests.
melamine is widely used industrial chemical, required e.g. for the manufacture of certain plastics and glues.

So they were relying on the hope that melamine wouldn't cause any health issues? Does this mean that melamine has been used at a lower level without obvious effects and now they've just increased the dose and the problems have now cropped up?

I don't know, but I suspect that baby formula has to be regularly checked by the local food authority, as it is the case in other countries.
The authority used standard tests, since probably until the kidney problems turned up and somebody noticed that all of the affected babies have been using this formula, nobody suspected any criminal activity.
After all, the manufacturer in question is the biggest manufactuer for milk products in China and it is partly owned by a company from New Zealand.

China is like the USA in the late 1800's to early 1900's as to a vastly unregulated consumer goods, labor, business and financial services. It took a number of books, magazine articles, too many people getting killed, the progressive movement and political leaders like President T. Roosevelt, and later FDR to make the necessary changes. Of course, unlike the USA of those eras, there is no freedom of speech or investigative reporters in modern China so only when massive numbers are sick or dead is any attention given, and even then, usually quickly quashed.
