AFL: Grand Final Week...

Mon Sep 22, 2008 8:12 am

mainly for the Australian folk here that follow our mighty game....I remember the 1989 Grand Final very well, God kicked 9 and Geelong lost by a kick, this was one of the all time classics outside of the WCE v Sydney GF that I went to in 2006.

so the prize is this...

the venue is this..the mighty MCG.

the teams are these...

http://www.gfc.com.au/

http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/

and the winner for mine will be Hawthorn, if Buddy kicks a bag then Hawthorn can win, but he must kick straight.

I'm looking forward to this clash immensely!

and for those overseas folk who don't know the game...take a little time & watch the last 10mins of the 2006 AFL Grand Final.

I think you're right about Hawthorn. Buddy just has to do his stuff & it'll be game over for Geelong....

Well that video was quite painful for me to watch as a Swans supporter. But as for the final, i just cant see Geelong being beaten by Hawthorne. Geelong to win by about a quarter of last years winning margin.

You can always watch the last minutes of '05. Leo Barry's mark still gives me tingles.

Congrats to Adam Cooney winning the Brownlow Medal. A worthy winner and the best acceptance speech I can recall. The fact he started drinking at 1000am most certainly loosened him up.

if Buddy doesnt, then Roughhead can chime in. or Williams like he did on the weekend.

The biggest question of the week is who will Geelong drop assuming Chapman goes back in? He was sorely missed against the Bulldogs, but if he isnt 100% fit would they risk him in a Granny?

Wojinski?
Varcoe?
Kelly?
Stokes?

tough choice for Bomber. But I suppose its a good problem to have.

PS watch out for Luke Hodge's ribs to get a nice work out at the openiong bouce - a la Dermie/Mark Yeates in 1989.

No one will ever top God. Greatest player I have ever seen. I watched him kick 14 against us (Essendon) in 1993. Time and time again Geelong would bomb the ball in to him. 3-4 Essendon defenders would punch/scrag him... and he would still mark it. If him and Lockett played with the current rules (no chopping of arms etc) they would kick 200 goals in a season...If that sounds ridiculous, in 1993 he kicked 124 in 17 games....an average of 7.29 per game!! FREAK!

What happened during the weekend? What? Eh?

Nothing happened over the weekend. Nothing at all. Nothing EVER happened last Saturday night at the MCG. No one was there. Much less yours truly.

A black hole.

General amnesia.

Nothing.

Void.

Go Saints, for Goodness' sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 biggrin

More seriously, my Saints lost to a great Hawthorn team and I can only hope for an actual Grand Final (as opposed to last year's embarrassment thanks to the shittiest team to ever play AFL, full of shitty players and their shitty supporters from their shitty slum called Port Adelaide), tight but fast-paced. I pick Geelong (again) to win it all, if only to avenge the scandalous shafting of Ablett for the Brownlow.

I dont like to denigrate anyones team... but. The Saints dont have the culture to win. and no ticker either. Compare Hodge and Dal Santo. The Saints had a sensational peiod of high draft picks, and have been unable to turn it into a winning culture. From my position of armchair coach. Ship Riewoldt off to the Gold Coast and maybe Ball and Dal Santo too.... and start again

Sacrilege.  eyepopping

I think it would be foolhardy to get rid of one of the top three centre-half forwards in the game. After all, Riewoldt did elevate his game in the Finals, and that is saying something considering he is already a top player.

But I agree with the winning culture thing. I think the Saints may be too talented for their own good and maybe tend to rely on that perception too much. At the same time, Geelong is superior to St Kilda in all facets of the game so I guess St Kilda loses out on both counts. Hence their inconsistency.

Next year...

is St Kilda going to get Cousins? Daniel Kerr still hasn't re-signed with WC so god only knows what the deal is with him....St Kilda would've come closer to a flag had they not sacked Malcolm Blight.

Does anyone know what overseas (not Australian) TV stations will be showing the Grand Final? Should be a cracking game and there is no way in hell I want to miss it.

Go Cats!

I'm in Germany at the moment. I was trying to keep the question broad so as to get a list of stations worldwide in case anyone else was interested.

Either way I did some searching and found the international broadcast guide on the AFL site so I managed to answer my own question. It still hasn't been updated for the Grand Final yet but I'm sure it will be soon. Despite this I'm fairly sure the channels will still be the same. The only question will be if they are playing the game live or not. For that I guess I we'll just all have to wait.

I caught a bunch of AFL games on tv when I was out there earlier this winter. It was awesome. We need that on here in the US!

I'm afraid you guys would simply slap helmet and armour on our guys, make them play rap music and put a kanga in the background and call it Aussie football.

Collingwood is looking like his new home. Him and Didak can then get on it together.....sorry couldnt resist!

I think he has made it pretty clear he wants to leave WA.

Too true. Blight is a genius, but the knobs at StK couldnt respect that and that he would do things differently to the dozens of coaches that have failed in the past.

Of course that's what we would do! It wouldn't end up working, but that's what they would try.

I certainly do not claim expertise whatsoever in NFL football (I have no clue, really), but I was wondering if getting rid of the armours and resorting to rugby-style protection (mouthpieces, protection for bollocks, some strapping here and there, etc.) could be trialled for a while. Maybe the feeling of being indestructible provided by the extra padding actually encourages reckless play? I know it is a recurring debate in hockey...

Just wondering.

As long as you support St Kilda, that's all that matters!!  Wink
