18 Arrested For Stealing Pieces Of Yankee Stadium.

Tue Sep 23, 2008 11:58 pm

Wow! How low can the Yankees' fans go? Why would anyone want to steal stuff from Yankee Stadium knowing it was wrong.

I know you were joking, and this isn't a stab at you, I'm just quoting you as a liaison to my post...

Whether you're a Yankee fan or not, the Stadium is one of the most iconic sports landmarks in the USA, and maybe even the world (except for the Montreal Olympic Stadium and that enormous soccer arena in Brazil).

I think it's perfectly normal to want a commemorative piece of it if you're a sports fan, or, more particularly, a Yanks fan. I guess it depends on what these people were stealing (seats or signs, for example, are uncool cuz those will be auctioned off anyway). But if someone chipped some paint off, or took some grass during the stadium tour, or took some otherwise un-valuable thing, then I don't see what the huge problem is.

That was the point I was trying to make in my original post. Thanks.  Wink

They could have waited, that is if the Yankees auctioned off some of the stuff. I think they will. If the fans wanted something, at least PAY for it.

Please ignore the resident of Massachusetts...

Seriously, I'm surprised it was only 18 people. I'm definitely planning on buying something when it goes on sale once the stadium is torn down - it is by far the most historic stadium in North American sports, and in the Top 5 in the entire world.

I'd take a piece so it can be displayed at Fenway. Spoils of war!  Smile

I'll give you the soccer stadium in Brazil (Estadio de Luz, I think), and perhaps Wembley, but how does Olympic Stadium in Montreal compare with Yankee Stadium?

Me neither - I have small souvenirs of both JFK Stadium and Veterans Stadium from Philadelphia. I knew several guys that had bricks from Connie Mack stadium that had been passed down to them. No big deal to me.

I was thinking the same thing. If anything, the stadium is known more for the dabacle it was(is) than for anything sports related(worldwide at least).

Eh, I think Fenway is better. I also agree, who cares about the yankess anyway? The Red Sox will always be better.  duck   praise

Now that you say it, of course. I plead ignorance - I don't follow soccer.  biggrin

Fenway has character, which is more than I can say for a lot of other ballparks in MLB, but it's a piece of crap. Yankee Stadium had character and wasn't a piece of crap.

I've never been to yankee stadium, but i visited Fenway last year when i was in boston. The only other MLB park i have been to was the metrodome. I was amazed at the shape fenway was in for being so old. Even if the seats did look deathly old, the rest of the stadium seemed to be in fantastic shape to me. And it does have character. I love how the wall in right is hip height and in left it is a monster. It is a great stadium.

There's your problem. The Metrodome is the worst stadium in the league. Even Tropicana Field is better than the Metrodome.

I've been to the new Comiskey Park*, Fenway Park, PacBell Park*, the Metrodome, Coors Field, Tropicana Field and Yankee Stadium, and I'd rank them thusly:

Yankee Stadium
Fenway Park
New Comiskey Park
PacBell Park
Coors Field
Tropicana Field
Metrodome

I still need to get to Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium sometime.

* or whatever they call them these days

To be fair, I have been to TWO games at Yankee stadium, a Yankees-Sox game and a Yankees-White Sox game. And I will say this, yankee stadium was is a great ball park, and when I heard they wanted to tear it down to make it a parking lot, I just thought that was the biggest load of crap. It deserves to be showcased as a museum or maybe even a minor league park.

checkmark  I'll also be fair and say that Fenway is a great place in its own way. It's a very blue-collar type place, small and intimate. Yankee Stadium is big and overwhelming, kind of larger-than-life. Both of which reflect the respective cities pretty well.

It'll never happen, but I wouldn't mind seeing the HOF moved into Yankee Stadium. They can preserve the field and use it for exhibition games or the like.

I think it is safe to say that the Yankees are not in the playoffs this year, and the Red Sox has earned a playoff berth! Congrats to the Red Sox!

I hope that the Yankees at least keep some of Yankee Stadium still standing. That would be nice to see. I understand that the famous outfield railing is being transferred over to the new stadium.

The MLB stadiums I have visited:

The Kingdome. (Torn down to make way for the now known Qwest Field for the Seahawks.)
Safeco Field.
Bank One Ballpark (Now Chase Field).
PetCo Park.
