2010 Honda Insight Hybrid Unveiled At Paris Show!

Fri Oct 03, 2008 11:32 pm

Earlier today at the Paris Motor Show, Honda officially unveiled the concept version of its upcoming 2010 Insight hybrid. Though labeled a concept, the show car very strongly previews Honda’s upcoming bargain-priced Prius fighter which will be unveiled officially later this fall.

2010 Honda Insight Hybrid

“The original Honda Insight pioneered hybrid technology in the U.S. and remains a symbol of Honda’s commitment to innovative technology and fuel efficiency,” said Takeo Fukui, Honda CEO. “This new Insight will break new ground as an affordable hybrid within the reach of customers who want great fuel economy and great value.”

Priced below the Honda Civic, this Japanese-built hybrid will carry over much of the hatchback styling from the FCX. Inside, the Insight appears similar to the Prius with a flat floor and large space, as well as a futuristic dashboard. In addition to recycling the Insight name, Honda will equip the new hybrid with the same 1.3-liter Integrated Motor Assist system found in the current-generation Honda Civic Hybrid. However, further development of the system will cut the IMA’s cost by about 50 percent in the new hybrid.

Although the new Insight will be loosely based on the Fit, it will measure in at 3 inches longer and 1 inch wider than the Fit, which Honda said will also be available with a hybrid powertrain in the near future.

One Honda insider said Insight’s fuel economy would be “insane,” with some Japanese sources predicting mileage as high as 71 mpg. Actual mileage will likely be lower when it hits our shores, but should still be impressive. And if those lofty fuel-economy numbers weren’t enough to cause an instant waiting list for the new hybrid, the next-generation Insight will list from under $18,500 – undercutting the Prius by thousands of dollars. The new Insight is expected to debut at November’s Los Angeles Auto Show and will likely be in North American dealerships by late spring 2010. Honda hopes to build 200,000 units annually, with half of that production to be sold in the United States."

Fellow motorheads, will Honda"slap down" the upcoming Chevy Volt and the existing Toyota Prius with their stylish and cheaper new Insight? Your thoughts, please?

If it gets even close to those MPG, they will for a long while sell well above $18,500 because the demand will drive up dealer prices as the waiting list will be long. You can count on that.

Nice car, but if you ask me, if you put a Prius and a Volt in a shaker and pour it out, this is what you will get. To me it looks like a Volt in the Front and a Prius in the middle.
That being said, while I drive an Accord with 286,000 miles on it, I had a co-worker who drove a Civic Hybrid until she wrecked it. If Honda has any hope of making it in the Hybrid market, let's hope this version of the 1.3 is markedly better than that POS in her car. It CONSTANTLY was in the shop. The electrical system was NEVER right, and each and every part was out of this world expensive. Example? The O2 sensor was almost $500 for just the part. No thanks.

If there was a car uglier then the Prius, there it is.

A little less ugly than the current model. That glass trunk lid just doesn't fly, and it must suck to use the rear-view mirror.

The original Honda Insight was ugly enough, and now they decide to come out with this even uglier POS. Also, the front grille looks like it was ripped off of a Ford Fusion.

One day I hope, Honda will hire a good designer.... they build such good engineered cars.... But they are all so bland and UGLY!!! What gives.... Toyota & Nissan too....What ever happened to the Toyota Supra, Nissan 300zx? Good looking is a big factor.... But then again I am a shallow SOB....

 checkmark  me too Big grin

I haven't seen the newer style of the 4-door Honda Civic around much, and neither the UGLY newer Nissan Sentra. The older styles used to be one of the most numerous cars around.

Perhaps it's the ungainly styling that's putting off the buyers?

Yeah, the original is hideous. I know it was designed to maximize efficiency, but jeez, it is one ugly beast. This one looks quite a bit like the Prius - no beauty in her own right, but better than Insight 1.0

I like the front end, but what were they thinking when they designed the back? Why take the ugliest part of the Prius and put it on your own car?  no

We'll see how good the mileage is when it arrives. Myself, I'd still take a VW diesel over this.

On the first picture to me it kind of looks like a tennis shoe

It's also too similar to the somewhat dorky-looking Toyota Prius

If Honda came out with an updated CRX, (last produced in 1991) it would sell 20 times more than these iffy-looking soccer mom mobiles. The Civic CRX was a stylish, quick, and economic little car. It would be an instant hit, and Honda fans would be all over it.
