Charity Money - Where Does It Go?

Sat Oct 11, 2008 3:37 pm

We are forever seeing appeals from charities for more donations. Fair enough, they need the money and it's for a good cause.

My question is, where is all this money going? Back in 2004 for example, the Indian ocean tsunami...
If I recall correctly, billions and billions of dollars were given as donations to charities such as the Red Cross, Oxfam, Unicef etc to help those in need.
From Wikipedia:

Public — By the end of 6 January 2005 the total from UK citizens stood at GBP 100m (USD 190m)[106] who responded by donating at a rate of up to GBP 1m per hour in the first week. — On 26 February 2005, it was announced that the Disasters Emergency Committee (an umbrella organisation of 12 aid agencies) were closing their appeal after raising a total of GBP 300m in the two months since the disaster struck. Other British charities raised a total of GBP 50m.[63]

Where did all that money go? Why haven't we seen how it's been used?

A rather different example would be a charity such as Cancer Research UK, who depend on donations as funds for their research. We often see the end product of how our money has been used.

I do give to charity and will continue to do so, It just seems a shame that we never see how our money is used or whether it is all being used...

I work in a PDSA charity shop, which is apart from posthumous (not hummus) donations, is the main money-generating operation for the charity. It is mainly operated by volunteers, of which there is a chronic shortage, so we are extremely busy as a workforce, but we try our best to inform people who ask what PDSA is doing at the moment. For instance in the run-up to christmas last year it was for covering general costs of running the charity and then the remainder was going to building/furnishing/etc a PDSA Animal Hospital in Liverpool.

If you want to find out how money is spent, usually you just have to ask the person on the phone, most charity workers are interested in the cause as most are volunteers.

Also you should be able to find out information online about the charity and how much of money raised is spent on the charity and how much is used to run the charity.
