Bloomberg Now To Be Allowed To Run Third Term?

Thu Oct 23, 2008 9:03 pm

Is this true that Bloomberg won the ability to run a third term?

If so, couldn't this then be used as an excuse for future Presidents to be able to claim they can run as many terms as they want?

No, because it would take 38 states to repeal the 22nd amendment to the United States Constitution.

Yea it was on the 5 o'clock news. I guess the good ol mayor is above democracy at all. Typical elitist. Oh well we will back here talking about it when he tries for a 4th term.

Blackbird, read the US Constitution sometime, will you. The 22nd amendment would have to be repealed or amended itself. That procedure is found in Article 5 of the US Constitution. So, in short, if the mayor of New York can convince the New York City Council to allow him to run for a third term, it would have just about zero impact on the term limits imposed on the US presidency.

Go ahead, I feel like being entertained. Fire away with the proof that Diebold rigged the machines.

I'm not a particular fan of no paper trail, and we can work to change that, but right now, I don't think it's an issue.

Yeah. I'm disappointed in him. I think he's a great mayor, but term limits are term limits. Either take it to the people through a referendum or respect the limits that the people set.

It's not like he couldn't advise whoever the next mayor would be.

His actions (and the Council) on this is despicable. As a certain General learned in Korea, no one is indispensable.

Well said.

I think Mayor Bloomberg needs to be reminded that had it not been for the current two 4-year term limit; Rudy Guiliani could have very well have campaigned for a 3rd term and won re-election IMHO.

Botton line is that he (Bloomberg) knew very well what the term rules were when he first ran in 2002 that he could only serve up through 2010.

IMHO, he's coming close to pulling a Hugo Chavez.

Not unless the NYC CIty Council is going to take over the duties of Congress.

Mayor Koch had three terms as Mayor of NYC, he did a heck of a job bringing the City out of the of the 1970s in which the City was nearly bankrupt. Mayor Bloomberg has done a great, not good , great job as Mayor of the City of New York. He is exactly the person to help the city whether this financial crisis, as home to Wall Street the woes of the Financial Community hurts the CIty much more than any other place in the Country. His bank ground make him better suited to navigate the crisis, and to save as many jobs as possible.

When Ed Koch ran for a third term, there were no term limits. I don't have as much of a problem with Bloomberg getting a third term as I do with him revoking the term limits that were put in place by referendum without seeking a referendum to do it.

It sets a very dangerous precedent.

There are extenuating circumstances which have to be considered, besides he did not revoke the term limits the city council amended the City laws. Also he still needs to be reelected by the voters, if the voters are not happy with a third Bloomberg term they can vote against him.

No because as I understand it the rule change is not permanent, if another Mayor in the Future wanted a third term they could ask the Council to again amend the law to allow them. This City council decision does not automatically guarantee third terms for Politicians.

Third terms are not unusual in New York politics, in fact it's been the norm.

Recent third term Politicians:

Koch administration 1978-1989 (three terms)
Pataki Administration 1995-2006 (three terms)
Cuomo administration 1983-1995 (served three terms, lost bid for fourth term)

Apples and oranges; Pataki & Cuomo both served as Governors for the State of New York NOT Mayor of New York City... two different constitutions here (state vs. city). The term limit rule in question is only directed towards running for Mayor of New York City. IIRC, there are no term limits imposed on running for Governor of New York STATE.
