Friday THREAD: When'd U First Get On The Internet?

Fri Oct 24, 2008 7:12 am

Question's pretty self-explanatory... funny how a lot of people don't even remember.

Mine was 1991, dial up, provided by CompuServe.
Bet none of ya can guess what my screenname was back then?  Wink

I first got on when I got my first capable laptop towards the end of 1999. I had dial up and it was painfully slow. I remember downloading music off Napster and it took hours to get anything. One night I left it downloading several songs and we had a thunderstorm, a lightning strike hit my laptop through the power and the phone line. Luckily Compaq repaired it under warranty!

Things have changed a lot since then, now I have ADSL, wireless throughout my house and a 3G card for access anywhere.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I first got on in 1994, with an IBM, that had a 75MHz processor and 4 KB RAM, a dial up modem at the blazing speed of 33.6 KBS, and windows 3.1

It took about 2 minutes to visit porn sites in those days.

I think it was 1999. Might have been 2000. LineOne (at that time a joint venture between BT and News Corp, now part of Tiscali) dial-up service at something like £9.99 a month plus the cost of phone calls. Used to block the line, was laboriously slow, but seemed like the best thing since sliced bread.

I now have mobile web via 3G with T-Mobile on my Windows Mobile, and recently (I've just moved) got Tiscali Broadband. It was a struggle just trying to get BT to connect my line (they cancelled my application without telling me). In all it took almost a month to get on the net.

Although I was a child and using my parents computer/internet, I first got on in 1995. We had an HP Pavilion desktop equipped with Windows 95, 133MHz, 8KB RAM, and I believe a 10GB hard drive. I can remember my dad telling me it was "top of the line" when we bought it, costing about $3,000 dollars. Then, a month later, came the 166MHz model. He was not a happy camper.

I remember them using the ISP Calweb, which to my knowledge, no longer exists. Not sure on the speed, but it was probably your average dial-up in 1995. It wasn't until late 1999 early 2000 that we got high speed cable internet.

1997 was the first time I got the internet. Remember the days when it took about a minute to load every page.

5kb's second was all I could get out of the connection! - Those were the days.

mmm... hard to recall

Had Compuserve back in 1988-89 but before that was using Tymnet to access information at work, downloaded price files and uploaded sales info as well as something called "eMail", that was about 1983 using a 300bps acoustic coupler.

Later on had Videotext wth the blinding speed of 1200/75bps.. yes 1200bps download and 75bps upload.. yes that's right 75 BITS per second.

Around the middle of the '80s wrote a custom script for an IBM 2701 emulator to obtain sales info etc from "Big Blue" (surprised a few IBMers that could be done)

Then Compuserve at 2400bps then around 1993 the first tentative steps into what we know as the Internet and WorldWideWeb.

Cheers

First time on the net (newsgroups and email only back then) would have been in late 1991 or early 1992 through a dial-up BBS with internet connectivity. First time I found porn  Smile

First time on the web through dial up access would have been in early 1995 at my high school, using Netscape 1.1 and a 14.4k modem. First time accessing by broadband was in late 1996, also at school. I remember seeing a download speed of 26k/sec and having my breath taken away!

1996 when my company installed its first computer with internet access. From 96 to about 98, when everyone got internet, we had a kind of in-house internet café.

Late 80's at some point. C64 with a 300 BPS modem. I want to say it was compuserve dial up and there was only a couple of sites on LI like the 4th protocol which my friend ran out of his bedroom. Coolest stuff.

My first Internet Email address was courtesy of FREDMail in 1991, a system that used primarially dialup lines and commodity Apple II hardware to relay messages once a day. (I was just finishing 1st grade...always have been a geek...also home to the first and ony account I ever hacked). I don't remember what that address was but I remember it was insanely long. (something like lincoln@blahblah.something.otherthing.thing.this.some.edu)

About a year later the family got Compuserve, with it's long distance call and per-hour usage fees but it provided access to content. Internet access via Compuserve came a after that. The first site I ever visitied (God, I wish I could remember the year) was http://www.discovery.com. The first commercial that I remember seeing an intenet address in was one for Discovery Networks.

Then came the local ISP run by a newspaper, and the shortest email address I ever had -- lincoln@pe.net. Newspaper branched out into DSL, so the family migrated to high speed in...1999?

I can't remember when I used the Internet first, but I'd estimate it was around 1998; I joined A.net in August 1999 and I think it was only very shortly before that, that I had Internet access at home.

Fall of 1997 in college. Didn't get it at home until May of 1998 I think. Had a 56k modem but was lucky to get 44k speeds out of it.

Ha ha yep , it was around 92 with CompuServe. Amazing though by 93/94 we were running maint documents online. We were also listing AOG inventory and crew location information. By 96 we were basically fully networked between maintenacne and operations so we could all look at information. Man it happend fast .

March 1995... 14.4 kb dial-up modem on a 486DX with 4 mb ram and a 40 mb hdd... wooot!

And.. there was none of this unlimited access stuff... I had to pay $50/month for 100 hours, with a charge of $1 per hour for everything over the 100 hour allotment.

1995 with a Mac Powerbook 520 black and white with 14.4K modem. I think they had something called eWorld preinstalled on it. I used AOL and with the same screen name I use to this day! lol.

By 1996 I had moved up in the world to a Compaq Pentium 150 MHz with a 33.6K modem. I remember running to the store to get a 56K modem and being wowed with the speed lol.

I have Verizon Fios now, it's fiber optic service and pretty steady 10 MBs download.

Whats even funnier ... I remember this guy came to visit us in like 89/90 and was trying to explain the internet to us. It seemed like some wild idea that we would all be networked via phone lines. At that point we were still enamored by faxes ! How do they do that ?

Well on our home computer we brought a couple of Internet trail kits provided by AAPT which lasted for a week on two occasions around 2000/2001. Didn't get proper Dial up Internet until 2004 with a ISO called Dodo. Got ADSL for the first time Late 2006/Early 2007. However I first accessed the net in 1998 at School.

Late 1994 with my brand-new state-of-the-art IBM Aptiva computer that I got on sale from the QVC outlet store in Frazer, PA.. I think I paid about $1200 USD, after my employee discount. I was using AOL 2.0 with a "super-fast" 56K dial-up modem.

It all seemed to be incredibly high tech at the time....  scratchchin

Probably at work in 1996 using PC and Apple computers and early high speed lines. At home, in May 1997 using a 166P, 3.2 GB HD, 32 MB RAM, Quantex brand computer, using AOL dial-up.

Back in the late 1980s...don't recall the exact year. Some friends of the family were connected via Prodigy or CompuServe (gimme a break I wasn't even 10 back then and wanted to run around outside more than play games inside). We connected at home in maybe 1994/95?

In 1991 my parents got three Videotel terminals in our house. I was 11 years old. Within a couple of months all of our friends had them too. I don't remember much about how we contacted each other - but i thought the terminals were cool at the time.  Smile

Our family joined Prodigy in 1989 or 1990, I guess. As soon as Prodigy began offering Internet service with their own WWW browser was the first time I logged on. I guess it was 1992 or 1993 when I was 12 or 13; the Internet was a much different place back then. I think I had a 9600 or 14.4K baud modem. I created my first webpage soon thereafter. I guess that was probably the first time that the web was available to the masses; maybe Compuserve or AOL beat Prodigy, but I can't remember.

Not to mention a mobile phone with internet access!

Even in the late 90s/early 2000s I was one of very few pepole in my high school with a cell phone on campus (granted, at the time it was technically a violation of state law to posess a communication device on school property--with narrow exceptons that I bent to my needs) but that was just a phone... No games, no texting, no Internet access.

Next was 1997 in my IT 100 class at College, the first websites I visited were the Rolling Stones tour website, Monday Night football website.

LOL. We may well look back at this point in time 10 years from now and be simply amazed that we used to access the internet from a non-mobile computer!

No games, no texting, no Internet access.

It's funny that the ability to talk over long distances on a mobile phone seems to be a mere "nice to have" feature after all the other stuff that you get these days. My first mobile phone was a strictly mono-chrome display device, sans picture camera / movie camera / GPS / organiser / radio / flashlight / calculator / internet access / expandable memory / touch screen / 3d colour games with stereo sound / etc.etc.

It's scary to think of the technological developments we aren't even aware of - or know that we need - that will become "must haves" in 10 years from now.

Depends on what you mean by "Internet"

My first exprience was in 1984/85 via RCPM systems and Fidonet, after that we got access at work via the Royal Australian Military College at Duntroon (via AARNet), text only, telnet, smpt & nntp 1992. My first ISP was Ozemail in 1993, the web was very small and Gopher was the information server of choice!

throughout the 1990ies, we used "Videotex", a system which was based on the French system dominant in France in those times. I only got onto the internet in about 1998 or 1999. But we in our office, for three to four persons only had one computer internet-connected, the ISP was "Sunrise", one of the then new telecom-companies around.

We got internet in 1999 or just before because this was one of the first websites I found. We were on dial up. Now in 2008.......we are still on dial up.  irked

Probably around 1999. We had AOL dial-up connection. Back then I would only go on the internet to look for toys for my birthday and Christmas.  Big grin

I would define it as anything that uses TCP/IP. But from the looks of things here I would say most folks here would define it as using the http protocol....

What about NCP?

1994 through my father's Compuserve account on our 486. He was at home during the week and I came home from school and he showed me the home office his company had setup for him with the 'internet'. I remember him explaining to me how it connected through the phone lines, and he looked up the train timetables to show how we'd get from our local station to Hong Kong on the train.

After that demo I don't think I used the internet for maybe another four years, I then setup a Yahoo email account (still have the same one today!) but didn't really get into the internet until 2002. Once I went to University that year my usage went off the charts. I probably used it more in my first week at Uni than I did the previous 8yrs combined...then I found internet bulletin boards. Oh shit!

Even in the late 90s/early 2000s I was one of very few pepole in my high school with a cell phone on campus

Seriously? I remember getting my first cellphone in 1995 and pretty much everyone my age (11 at the time!) had one.

I want to say the first time I went online in any capacity was in the late 80's/early 90's. It wasn't exactly the web as we know it now. There was some server called Argus, I think, and they had a games section called Games Galaxy. My brother used to use it, and I used to log on and play a text trivia game they had. You could also chat with other people who were playing.

I don't remember who the ISP was - it might have been TIAC (The Internet Access Company, which was founded in the town in which I grew up). But I do remember using dial-up through a 2800 baud modem.

A few years after that, my family all got AOL accounts, back when everyone was getting an AOL account. A few years after that, we had a Prodigy account.

Good times.....
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".
