Anybody Been To Erbil Or Kurdistan?

Sun Oct 26, 2008 4:15 pm

I've been looking for a place to go for Thanksgiving week next month, and then I saw this NYTimes article:

http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/10/26/travel/26next.html?ref=travel

"While much of Iraq remains mired in war, the semiautonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq has enjoyed relative safety and prosperity, thanks to a no-fly-zone imposed by the United States in 1991 after the first gulf war. So instead of repairing oil fields and burying their dead, Iraqi Kurds have been erecting shiny hotels, opening amusement parks and trying to figure out how to lure tourists.

There is even a Ministry of Tourism, with a staff of more than 400 and a bare-bones Web site (www.tourismkurdistan.com) with color pictures and links to the region’s thin infrastructure."

Anybody been? Anyone work those OS EBLVIE flights?

I met a British guy whilst travelling in that region who had been to Erbil and had loved it. Felt very safe apparently; locals friendly, no fighting, no hostility, cheap accommodation and interesting scenery and sights. He crossed from Turkey and travelled overland in minibuses or hitchhiking with truckers, very cool passport stamp I must say!

Looked into it about 2 years ago when OS started their VIE flights. Never got round to it though and would have most likely meant flying in and right back out again.

One of my friends works for Halliburton and has gone to Kurdistan (Irbil, I think) a few times recently. He said he never felt unsafe in the least bit, despite the fact his delegations went with bodyguards. He said the people and society are more reminiscent of Istanbul than that of Kuwait or Dubai (where he lives). I'd just keep an eye on what the Turks are up to in relationship to Kurdistan than anything else.

That probably rules an overland crossing into Kurdistan from the West...

So try Molokai or Lānaʻi, they're beautiful and way off the beaten path.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be 50-100 miles away from where Turkey is conducting operations against the PKK. Either way, it seems tensions have calmed drastically. Kurdistan seems like a very interesting place, you'll have to let us know how it is.
