Nissan To Launch New 370Z Sports Car At L.A. Show

Thu Oct 30, 2008 1:18 am

Nissan confirmed that they will unveil the new Nissan 370Z sports car at the Los Angeles auto show in November 2008. The 330 horsepower V-6 from the Infiniti G37 sedan and coupe will be the standard powerplant. A convertible version of the new Z will be launched at the New York Auto Show in early 2009.

This car is shorter and wider and it gets a 3.7-liter V6 powerplant. This is the first full redesign of the Z car since it re-launched as a 2003 model. Styling updates include the extended hood and dramatic headlights (similar to the new Maxima), angular taillights, and bulging fender flares. The C-pillar also slopes down at about a 45-degree angle. The 99 inch wheelbase is also shorter the its previous version, which will help the Z to handle better.

Inside, the interior has a more pronounced sports-car feel, with contrasting accents on the door panels and leather seats.

Nissan’s statement today confirms that the 370Z will be in dealerships early next year. The new Z-car seems to be a return to its 240Z roots, IMHO. Your thoughts, fellow sports-car enthusiasts?

While I imagine it drives as good or better than the 350Z (which is pretty good, IMO), the 370Z's design is contrived beyond belief. The lights, although they follow panel lines, look like bits of melted plastic stretched in the wind - not a good look, if you ask me. Also, I really am not a fan of Nissan's peaked roof look, as seen here and on the GT-R.

Speaking of the GT-R, I think Nissan's three most recent new car models (including the new Maxima) are proof that Nissan's design department is comically bereft of anyone with any aesthetic sense.

Err, you mean the 260/280Z, I think. If this car was harking back to the 240Z, it would be much smaller than the 370Z, and would have a turbocharged four connected to the rear wheels. Not that something along those lines would be bad...

Here's a photo of the 370Z's new interior. Nice, but very business-like!

I saw it driving around here a few weeks ago, albeit masked up. It has a great exhaust sound.

There is a persistent rumor in the auto press that Nissan will offer a FOUR-DOOR Infiniti version of the GT-R that will be powered by a V-8, not the dual turbo 6 in the GT-R.

Back to its roots in the sense that the 370Z has a shorter wheelbase than the 350Z, a six-speed manual (a seven-spreed automatic will be an option) and that the long-hood, short deck design that the 240Z made famous is definitely making a comeback. Now if Nissan could only figure out a way to bring back the 240Z's pricetag....

Do you mean a prototype version of the Z? I guess it was being hot-weather tested?

Yeah the Nissan test track is about an hour away in Stanfield, AZ. I imagine their employees live close to me since there's nothing out there.

240Zs, 260Zs, and 280Zs all had non-boosted inline six cylinder engines, with carburetors on the 240 and 260Zs and fuel injection on the 280Zs. A turbocharger was optionally available beginning with the 280ZX, but it still had an inline six cylinder engine. All Nissan/Datsun Z-cars have been rear-wheel-drive.

As I stated in another post, I think they finally have the Z back to where it belonged in the first place.
The boomerang headlamps and the upturned 3/4 window make it a far more interesting looking vehicle.
If I'm not mistaken, they were also able to make it a bit lighter---although for it's segment it's still a bit bloated.

I'm not sure if I like it or not. I dont like the rims or the color. I would need to see one in person to make a better judgement.

On the bright side, I have been looking at buying an 05+ Nissan 350Z so I hope the coming launch of the 370Z will drive the price of the 350Z down.

Just in time for a recession! LOL

I love the Z, always have.

I’m still dreaming of picking up a 1996 Twin Turbo…the last year they made it in that iteration. Saw one at a car show last weekend that had been heavily after-market modded and was sweet. Love them.

The track version of the new ones will rival many Porsche metrics.

If Nissan can hold the line on production costs, the new 370Z should be priced at approximately $31K USD. Not too bad for a throughly capable sports car, IMHO.

Well, $40K+ if it's actually equiped as a sports car..
Still a relative value for the performance and handling.

Good plan, I have a '91 that needs some work but will be an awesome thing when it gets done!

Not quite true.. they actually built them to order up until 2000 but you will likely not see one in the USA as they were RHD Japanese domestic market only.

Cheers

The base version of the 2008 350Z is $28, 510 - so even with the "Enthusiast" package upgrades, the new Z should start at $32K USD. The current Touring version of the 350Z is about $34K.

Grand Touring with NAV would be around $39K .
NISMO starts at $39.8.

I know several owners...none even considered the 'base' model. It's fairly spartans.

It's a bit like saying you can have 335i for 43K...when in reality it's going to bump 50K if it's adequately equipped.

That was my point.

No question…great value for the buck. I had hoped Mazda’s RX-8 would have kept pace on the performance side, as I was a huge RX-7 fan back in the day, but they really hosed it up, IMHO. Off topic, though, I digress. Z rocks.

Nice! I’ve seen so many that have held up very well…owners really dote over them and take good care of them.

Correct---thank you. I was referring to US market only.

And the single worst A/C system likely ever put in a car.....you'd be better off spitting on yourself to keep cool.

OK, I made an error - I was thinking of the 240SX for some reason, instead of the 240Z, which is, once again, a car I would very much like to see Nissan revive as a new model in the old form (even though I am admittedly not much of a Nissan fan).

My initial reaction to the car's appearance is dislike, but maybe it will grow on me.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.
