Anyone Been To Doha, Qatar?

Thu Oct 30, 2008 8:54 am

We're thinking of heading down to South Africa in January / February, and one of our flight options is with Qatar, with a 10 hour stop in Doha. So, my question is: What is there to do there for a day? How easy is it to get from the airport to the city? What are the main sights? Or, is it so dull that it would be better to wait at the airport (as Wikitravel seems to suggest). Any thoughts welcome!

Cheers

I had a 9 or 10 hour layover in Doha flying ATH-DOH-JNB about a year and a half ago. Stayed in one of the various hotels the airline recommends for transitting passengers. Doha was ok. A bit boring. There was alot of construction going on when I was there. Got the impression that there is not much to do. Doha seemed to be on the rise but at the time I was there it is nothing like Dubai. My suggestion is to put yourself up at some hotel and get some rest during the layover. Not much else you can do.

But please note, this was over a year ago so things may have changed.
Nice to hear you are visiting South Africa in Jan  Smile
Great time of year to be here. Where you planning on travelling in SA?

The rooftop bar at the Mercure is one of the few places where you can, there's usually quite an interesting crowd there, although the hotel itself is rather bland and a pain to get to.

I can't remember right now if the Ramada had alcohol available (most likely did).

Doha is... well, boring.

My wife's from Durban, so it will be the annual visit to the in-laws... Hoping to tack on a few days in Cape Town as well, as despite having been to SA 3 times, I've never visited the Cape  Smile

Suggest you definitely do this. The Cape is one of the most wonderful places on earth - truly stunning.  Smile

If you are not considering it on price grounds, then I suggest you forget the QR option and spend that extra time in Cape Town for sure.

Talk to QR332, I think he lived in Doha for awhile. He will point you in the right direction.

Getting a beer or fine wine in any of the major hotels is not an issue in the slightest. You can't bring alcohol in to Qatar, but you can buy it on the way out!  crazy

I've spent a long time in Doha, but haven't been there for 2 1/2 years now. Yes, it is "quiet", but at this time of year a walk along the Corniche will be very pleasant. You could also take a dhow to the small island in the bay (sorry can't remember the name!)

Must be some time you have been there. Getting alcohol is no problem in the major hotels.

as well as Ramada, etc etc etc.  Smile

You can head to Old Suuk, Corniche or head to one of the Shopping Center like the City Center or Vilaggio. There are also some nice restaurant around. Have fun.

That used to be PalmTree Island but it is closed now ( I believe for 2 years now) but the island basically still exist.  Smile

true enough - but he is only there for a short period of time - 10 hours - of which he'll spend a chunk of that at the airport. Hanging out in a hotel makes it hardly worth having the stopover does it.

And to be honest, there isn't a great deal there to see otherwise. (not that AUH, BAH or DXB are much better).

But on the plus side, if you do decide to go into the city then it does mean you'll avoid the awful transfer scrum you'd get otherwise if you changed flights directly at the airport !!

I concur - Doha is quite a boring place. I spent a week there back in '02, and did many visa runs there as well. Take a good book.

I had a 6-hour layover in Doha once. After arrival I rented a small car, drove around the city centre for a while and then had a delicious meal in a Lebanese restaurant.

I very much enjoyed the flights with Qatar Airways and including a short visit to Qatar made the whole experience better, in my opinion.
