New Series Of Top Gear, Who's Watching?

Mon Nov 03, 2008 7:53 pm

Who saw the first program of the new top gear series?

The truck driving challange was superb. I have not laughed at a TV program for ages like I did last night. Clarkson trying to power slide his truck.........Then falling off his seat was the funiest thing I have seen in a long time. I was crying. Then my wife started watching, pretty soon she was crying.

At the end of the challange to carry a delicate load, Hammond said to May 'I think it will have broken the lights, a few dents', May opens the doors and said 'oh, its worse than that'. That started me off again.

I can't wait for the next one, but I think it will be hard to beat that.

Anybody provide a link to it on youtube as I'm not sure how to.

It was hilarious...The whole concept was brilliant.

I liked when They had to do the hill test, with valuables behind the truck?

and Jeremy had a perfect start...but then they decided to knock over his drum set anyway....priceless.

Seems that next week they'll be doing their bit in the US...should be hilarious.

I did!!! I did!!!

But to be honest I was mildly disappointed. In my opinion they tried too hard to be funny and it showed. It didn't look genuine to me. While I do appreciate British humor, when you stop improvising and script too much in kinda kills it for me.

Still, I can't wait for the next episode to come out!

Apparently Clarkson's comments during Sundays show about truckers murdering prostitutes has created another BBC storm in a tea cup.

Oh dear, please let this blow over quickly If you was right..................I'd agree with you

I knew something would be said following his comments about Ross' disappearance for the next couple of weeks.

I'm just d/l it now but I will definantly be watching this series... the original is much better than the Top Gear Australia...
I'm looking forward to Top Gear Live when they come to New Zealand. The Australian one should be good too I'd imagine they will go crazy driving around in Holdens and Fords.

Superb series! The best Sunday night TV ever! I have not laughed as much as I did watching the Truck challenge for a very long time! My side still hurts! I am so looking forward to the 16th November, I'm going to the Power and Prestige Motorshow at the NEC in Birmingham, and Top Gear Live is there! Should be excellent! If I can get some photos, I will post them on here!

I watched the first episode, almost by accident though, I came across the opening titles while zapping through the channels and continued watching. But I agree, it was hilarious!  Smile

I'll try to remember watching it, but my irregular working hours make it a bit hard. Last night they showed on a local channel the episode where they race against a team of Germans on the circuit of Zolder, Belgium (as Clarkson put it: the country was created so the Germans and English would have a place to fight). The Top Gear crew flew in on Spitfires, that was hilarious!! Ow my sides!  Smile

Any chance of seeing the bbc i-player from outside the UK by using a UK proxy?

I would love to see it again. Unfortunately TopGear isn't shown here.

I just love this -

"A spokeswoman from English Collective of Prostitutes said: 'This is a truly heartless comment. In the wake of the murders of five young women in Ipswich and the killing of over 60 prostitute women in the last 10 years, how did this remark, making light of the murder of prostitute women, come to be broadcast?"

Have been watching this show religiously for the last 4/5 years. Best show on TV and on it's own, worth the ridiculous TV licence fee we have to pay here in the UK. It's only over the last 3 or 4 seasons that the stunts have become a little more outrageous so yes, things tend to be more "staged", but that's part of the show. You are meant to be able to see through the gags. My personal favourite, and it's hard to pick one, is the "Robin Reliant space shuttle".
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_b4WzWFKQ20
As for the "complaints" about "lorryists"... hahaha... the BBC claimed there were 188 complaints out of 7 million viewers. We all know (especially on this site) when figures are taken out of proportion and when the media love to jump on the bandwagon, especially after a big story like the Ross/Brand phonecalls.
This is season 12 and I still can't get enough.
Long live Top Gear...

I would not equate Clarkson's (not unexpected) comments with two grown men on the radio acting like immature 14 year olds on someone's private phone.

Not new either, Clarkson got the idea probably from a very long running joke in Viz .
They've been making 'truckers killing women' (not just prostitutes), comments for something like 15 years, based on Peter Sutcliffe (The Yorkshire Ripper), Robert Black (who killed young girls) and no doubt some others.
Clarkson just 'updated' this to refer to the one who killed those 6 prostitutes in Ipswich 2 years ago. Which I don't think he made any direct reference to - which would be very dubious.

But since Ross and Brand, the enemies of the BBC (mostly media owned by foreigners), what's left of the organisation formed by the late, unlamented Mary Whitehouse and just those who like to complain, are going to pounce on anything.

It is never a good idea to take what Clarkson says seriously, apart from his patronage of welfare charities for service personnel.
I mean, Top Gear is hardly a serious look at the automotive world is it?

I watch it religiously. I cried for a whole hour, then watched it again and cried for another hour. Havnt laughed that hard for ages.

I love the way he introduces the stig, where he said: 'Some say he sleeps inside out, and he once had full sex with Russell Brand's answering machine!'

Bring on next week!

As long as Finalgear isn't offering a stream I would rather watch the bbc i player. I reckon there won't be a solution for me..

Hey all...

Just wanted to say that I watched an episode of Top Gear Australia...Just my thoughts.

I don't like the track...
I don't like the fact that the Star in a boxed car or however it is called ....narrates his own lap.

I do think the piece on the Mercedes SL 53 was really well done (fantastic car)

The "what were they thinking" segment....All I have to say is...What where they thinking? (pun intended)

Overall though...I thought it was decent attempt...I'd watch it before Fifth Gear...but not before the British Version of Top Gear...Now we just have to see what Top Gear America is like...

Well, there's usually regular http download links available a short time after each episode. The alternative is to try your luck with YouTube,

Sadly for us, the BBC iPlayer has some ferocious geo-tracking, so it takes quite a bit of working around to access it outside the UK.

It's great to have TG back I wonder if the episode will be repeated on Dave.

To me it seams like one two individuals have an unhealthy obsession with the BBC my fear is they stop making programmes that are funny for fear of upsetting one or two people and a few thousand a few days after the programme was aired.

I like Clarkson because he says what he believes to be correct.

Here in the UK it's called the reasonably priced car I guess it depends on the star driving it is.

We haven't even gotten Series 11 over here yet on BBC America, much less the new series. I've seen parts of 11 on YouTube, but apparently the Beeb is getting more militant about people putting episodes up.

Only complaint I had about the parts of 11 I've seen is having two "stars" in Star in A Reasonably Priced Car" - it feels forced and rushed. I hope they've gone back to one star at a time in Series 12.

Quoting BlueElephant (Reply 18):

At the risk of being pessimistic, I have low expectations. Top Gear is Top Gear because of the hosts, and in particular how they play off Clarkson. I hope that cast dynamic will come out in the US version, but I have my doubts...that's why Jay Leno turned it down, he was afraid of coming across as a cheap imitation of Jeremy.

It is back to 1 star for Season 12. Episode 1 was Michael Parkinson who I thought was pretty funny during the interview. What I'm finding is that I've been out of the UK for so long that I don't recognize any of the stars unless they've had a US presence, but Parkinson has been around long enough that I remember him (I left in 1992). I've got Episode 2 and I'm just waiting for the kids to go to bed so I can sit down and watch it since it's based around their US segment from SFO to Bonneville. Should be interesting to watch and hopefully a better perspective than what was shown during their US roadtrip a couple seasons ago.

well, it finally happened. The bugatti veyron did a lap of the TGTT. While it was definitely one of the fastest, it wasn't THE fastest.

The car sounded great as far as i am concerned. Not your standard this motor puts out 1000hp sound, but i thought it sounded pretty awesome.

And it ended up just where I predicted, within the top 5.

I do have to say, that thing went around the track with no drama whatsoever, i.e. every car that's gone through the track was either understeering, oversteering, jumping all over the place and what have you not. This thing was so incredibly planted though.

That's my only complaint about the Veyron, it doesn't sound like much to me. Yes it has a nice burble tone to it, but it's really quiet.

The Zonda F on the other hand... that's just pure auditory sex  eyepopping

That was the real surprise considering it's not a track day car, and it was built for absolute flat out speed, not downforce in the corners.

Tonights episode was great! They were testing the new Ford Fiesta. Bunch of normal tests, how does it drive, what's the topspeed, can it outrun a corvette in a chase through a shopping mall (yes), if it's green enough (bright flashy green!). Last test "what if you're asked to assist in a landing assault with the Royal Marines" So they put the Fiesta on a landing craft, in the middle of an army exercise... awesome!  Smile When the Fieste exited the landing craft, the water was about a meter deep, but the car still managed to make it up to the beach, with 3 commando's on board, firing through the windows. And all the time Jeremy Clarkson was testing how much gun clips they could stuff in the glove compartment, if the smoke grenades would fit in the cupholders and so on... hilarious  Smile

That beach assault was brilliant fun!

Must have cost a bit, the Ministry Of Defence don't lay on those sorts of things for free!
Mind you, it's after many appearances by MoD assets like Challenger Tanks, Apache helicopters, Typhoons and some I've forgotten.
They'll see it though, as good for recruiting and PR too.

I loved that episode, laughed my ass off at the beach assault and the other "tests" he put the car through. I also was amazed at how quickly that Caterham R500 got around the track... 1:17.9, faster than the Veyron and only 8 tenths off the record by the Gumbert Apollo. It was a fun lap to watch too, the stig was working the wheel like a madman.
