It's Official: First Porsche Car With A Diesel

Fri Nov 21, 2008 5:33 pm

After months of speculation, Porsche has finally acknowledged that the Cayenne will be available with a diesel engine, starting in Feb. 2009. They didn't develop it on their own, it's the well-known Audi/VW 3.0 V6 TDI, which will be used seemingly unchanged.

Link (sorry, German only):

Some months ago it was Subaru, now it's Porsche's turn. The number of car manufacturers who don't offer a diesel option is ever-shrinking...

Please don't flame me for calling the Cayenne a car.  Smile

And for anyone who is interested, these were the very first Porsches with a diesel (no kidding):

Exceptions confirm the rule.

I saw that today. I don't really mind to see a diesel in the Cayenne.

On the other hand, if they put a boxer diesel engine in the 997, that would be a real shame!!

That's cool. Makes more sense than a 500hp turbo V8 in a car like that. Your journey might take 3 seconds or so longer, but it saves a lot of fuel. It would be a pleasure to cruise around at high speeds in a diesel Cayenne!

But what's the point of buying an expensive luxury car if you then worry so much about mileage???

I've never got that.

If I had the money to buy a Cayenne, well, first of all I wouldn't buy a Cayenne, but even if I did, why would I opt for a less performing, less enjoyable engine in the sake of saving a few bucks every month after having spent around $80,000 in a car?

Diesels in small cars are great and economical. Diesels in trucks and utility type cars are convenient, but in a luxury SUV that's going to spend it's entire life on smooth tarmac??

Which is the exact same car/platform but with a nicer interior, and a V10 diesel with the moon's weight worth in torque.

The V10 is gone now, in favor of the 3.0 6-cylinder that will appear in the Q7, Touareg, and Cayenne for 2010. Speaking of which, if you are comparing the corporate cousins, I would ditch the Touareg and get a Q7.

Some great photos of Porsche diesel tractors here.

Lest we forget some other folks have made modestly sized diesel engines in the past.

This is from the Busch Sulzer people

It's been rumored in the European automotive press that Porsche will make the Cayenne diesel engine optional in the new (and ugly) 2010 Porsche Panamera 5-door sport sedan.  vomit
