Nepal Approves 100% Equal Rights For Gays

Sun Nov 23, 2008 6:56 pm

Quote:
Gays and lesbians in the Himalayan kingdom previously suffered persistent persecution from security forces during the absolutist rule of King Gyanendra. The harassment of lesbian, gay and trans people continued at the hands of Maoist rebels.

The assembly will draft a new constitution, decide the fate of the monarchy and govern Nepal for the next two years.

Mr Pant is a hero to many gay activists across the world. On a visit to India last week he said:

“We have moved from being a marginalized and persecuted lot who were thrown out of homes, schools and jobs to people who have human rights and are now protected by the police, the same people who once harassed us.

Stunningly progressive move for a nation in that part of the world... very laud worthy!
ARTICLE HERE

Hmmm... South Africa goes from Apartheid to Equal Marriage in the span of 13yrs.
Now disputed territory with China approves sweeping rights.

...and yet, people in the USA stage ballots for the express purpose of taking EXISTING rights away from a minority.

Anyone else wonder if the "Land of the Free" moniker might be up for grabs/dispute?  Yeah sure

Good to see them do that. Surrounding countries could learn alot from them.

Hey, if it that's what it takes.

Wedding businesses - planners, florists, caterers, hotels - in California are pretty much cutting their wrists at the moment.  Smile

Not me, I hardly think a vote in CA is cause for alarm but feel free to move to Nepal. I think you would prefer it here.

*deep sigh*

"Land of the Free and Home of the Brave" my left gonad.

Pakistan had a female premier before we did (we still haven't...we just got our first non-100% white man). New Zealand gave women the right to vote before we did. Every single civil right that we beat our chests over... someone else beat us to it.

Just once, JUST ONCE do you suppose the U.S.A. could actually be a world leader in civil rights?

Simple answer is no, our track record speaks for itself.

I honestly wish I had a different answer.

I think both statements are an unfair assessment. We have to realize that there is no "perfect country". No the USA is not perfect, Nepal is not perfect either. However, its not an excuse not to try to better a country. The USA can certainly learn from Nepal in this issue, while i am certain that Nepal has a lot to learn from the USA in other issues.

It takes a little humility. That is something the USA can learn from Nepal

So did India and Israel but that shouldn't put you off your feed, Doc. The important thing in government is not the color of the candidate or what's between their legs, but what they do with their brains and what kind of a person they are.

and Mr. Obama, technically speaking, is half white and knows it and honors and respects that part of his heritage, because his father was little more than a sperm donor.

Be glad of what you do have, Doc. I'll bet you wouldn't have wanted Geraldine Ferraro as Prez

Exactly whose form of government did this country duplicate about 220 years ago back in
Philadelphia? You'd be surprised as to how broad of a First Amendment right this country
has compared other countries, even European ones.

But it is the US that is being talked about with "the land of the free...", not other countries. The US is supposed to be a leader in civil rights, especially when it takes offence to other countries lack of those said rights. Kind of the pot calling the kettle, so to speak.

Great to hear this for Nepal and its citizens.

Its not at all the the land of the free for everyone . Its the land of the free for some. UK/Ireland/Holland/Germany etc....are far more advanced than the USA when it comes to Gay rights issues.

It's funny that other countries have passed this type of law and the world is still here. Americans think if the USA passed gay marriage then the world will really come to an end. Americans are on such a high horse lol

Yes my partner lives in Spain and loves it there. I enjoy my time there also and people seem very open and liberal everywhere we go.
