Ugly! New 2010 Porsche Panamera Sedan Unveiled!

Thu Nov 27, 2008 4:56 am

OK, maybe "ugly" is too strong of a word. Let me just say that I think the Panamera is as almost as unattractive as the Cayenne SUV from the looks of these just-released official photos from Porsche.

2010 Porsche Panamera Sedan - side view

The entry-level front-engine RWD sedan has a lengthy hood with a short rear overhang, a rear hatch door instead of a traditional trunk lid with 911 styling, a front fascia that resembles a cross between the 911 and the Cayenne, and an interior that is rumored to feature four high-back bucket seats. The rear seat fold down for additional cargo space.

The Panamera is expected to have the following specifications:
Overall length: 16 feet (longer than the current BMW 5-series!)
Width: 6.25 feet
Height: 56 inches
Weight: 4100 lbs.

2010 Porsche Panamera Sedan - rearquarter view

Under the hood, the Panamera will be powered by V6 and V8 engines ranging from 300 hp to 500 hp. Some of these engines will use turbochargers and direct-injection; the basic engines pieces will be sourced from VW/Audi with some Porsche sourced secondary parts. All-wheel drive along with "enhanced" V8 power (supercharged and/or turbocharged) will be standard on the top-end Panamera "S" model, and optional on lower-trim-level models. Six-speed manual or the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmissions will be offered.

Porsche will assemble the Panamera at its Leipzig, Germany, plant using body shells built and painted at a Volkswagen plant in Hanover and engines from Porsche's plant in Zuffenhausen. Pricing estimates are set at $100,000 - $150,000 while the 500 horsepower Panamera "S" will be priced near $200K USD.

Porsche said it has a worldwide sales target of 20,000 Panameras a year. The Porsche Panamera 5-door sedan will make its public debut at the 2009 Geneva motor show.

What's your thoughts on the upcoming Panamera, Porsche enthusiasts? Is a five-door Porsche sedan "sacrilege" as some Porsche purists have stated?

What is that, a luxury sedan with a hatchback? What were they thinking of?

I understand why Porsche stuck to the 911 design since it first got out. They can't design a good looking car even with all the money in the world.

It looks weird. They tried to let it look like the usual Porsche, but somehow it didn't look right. The front is like the usual Porsche, but starting from the middle it just looks weird. I guess the seats aren't too comfortable, still looks tight back there and the windows are tiny...

Anyone with $200K to throw around at the moment would move right over to the Lambo Estoque. 500hp is nothing nowadays. The CTS V has more than 550, and it's $60K, with 4 doors, and a good Nürburgring time. Porsche has the badge. But at this price level, the only people interested would be engineers, mathematicians, accountants...the estoque's got it. this hasn't. Why are they so adament in stretching a 911 to all sorts of dimensions? Why can't they break out and design a whole new look?

I think the thing to think about is, if it was the exact same car, but badged as something other than a 'Porsche,' people would love it. This goes for the Cayenne too.

Why do you think the budget and 4-door Ferraris are badged as Maseratis?

I would not call it ugly but also not attractive either.
I guess it will find its customers who can prove themselves that they have the money to buy it (or lease it) instead of buying a Mercedes AMG/Brabus ....and if I look at some of those tuned Brabus Mercedes cars I think the Porsche looks much better.

Either way I am not in the market for such a car.......
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

Quoting Greaser (Reply 5):
But at this price level, the only people interested would be engineers, mathematicians, accountants...

How much exactly do you think engineers, mathematicians and accountants make?

I think you meant lawyers and plastic surgeons (I was going to include high street brokers, but they're all bankrupt now...).

 biggrin

Quoting Greaser (Reply 5):

Good question. Probably because Porsche is all about that particular design and they fear people would react strongly against a new Porsche styling saying it's not a proper Porsche anymore? If you ask me, neither the Cayenne nor that thing are anyway.

Quoting N328KF (Reply 6):

Actually, I believe in the opposite. These cars are bland and aesthetically not edgy at all. The only reason they sell so much (at least the Cayenne) is because of the badge and the associated hype.

I like the looks. But I also think the Shorts isn't a bad looking airplane. It just doesn't strike me as very practical. Porsche should have just designed a wagon from a clean sheet and been done with it, if that was the objective. Still, if it didn't cost more than my house I would consider it.

Interestin, the blue car seems to be the Sport (Spar) variant, the silver one the turbo (expensive) version. (You can see that from the yellow resp. red brakes.)

Quoting StasisLAX (Thread starter):
the top-end Panamera "S" model

If they stay the way they do with the Cayenne, 911 etc, the versions will be (from lowest hp to highest)

Base
Sport
Turbo
Turbo S

100% agree. I would not want to sit in the backseat for more than two minutes.

Porsche found a lot of customers, even for the ugly Cayenne. This one will have less, considering it costs more.

If I had a house and the money to buy a car like this, I'd go for the Aston Martin Rapide.

I agree. It's not bad looking until you see the last rear 3rd of the car (starting from the rear axle then backwards). Like if you cover the ass of the car in the picture with your hand it looks just fine. But they had to force the Porsche look on its ass and it looks hideous. A small trunk lid like in a proper sports sedan would've been much better.

Porsche definately lost the battle of the luxury 4 door coupés between the Lamborghini Estoque and the Aston Martin Rapide. What an ugly car compared to the timeless and classy beauty of a 911.

None of those has even entered the market, but Porsche has already "definately lost the battle". What does it take to "win" the battle? Sales figures? Turnover? Profits? Wait until 2020, then we can see who had what success with the cars. Porsche came up with the Cayenne, ugly car, dumb name, ridiculous fuel consumption - and they sold herds of them.

Its not that bad as some say here, but I agree its no match for its beautiful rival, the Aston Martin Rapide. Some details, like the side-skirts, are not good.
Much much better though than the truly tasteless gas-guzzler Cayenne (a German magazine tested the Cayenne Turbo the most fuel-thirsty car below the Bugatti Veyron), which sadly still found many tasteless "nouveau rich" customers.

It will sell. Definitely not my taste (I prefer small hatchbacks) but I do appreciate that it's something different, meaning a 5-door with folding rear seats instead of yet another 4-door saloon. It's not ugly but it's not elegant either.

Now what I would seriously consider is a 5-door version in the size of the 3-Series. IMO that could be a big seller as a nimble, smaller version of the Panamera, and with smaller proportions the "bottle" design of the 911 might even work to make it look agile. Price it at $45K and it would sell well.

also, a flying spur retails at US$170,990...195mph top speed, and it's a bentley! I'm not saying this car won't do well, because it probably will. It's just that, for God's sake for that money there are much nicer cars available. The only thing I'll grant the Porsche is that it might very well be a good track car.

Dead mackerel in the moonlight. It shines but it stinks. It's just very, very difficult to retain sports car flavor on a package such as this and have it come out looking good. Jaguar couldn't even do it back in 1969(?) when they 2+2-ized the XKE. The proportions were wrecked. Someone earlier mentioned proportions on this car...that's the problem.

Another jellybean sedan, and a bad one at that, from Porsche no less. regards...jack

Of cause its not exactly whats needed these days, but its a luxury car and will sell in relatively small numbers. It doesnt matter much if some 10000s of it hit the road. What makes the American car industries products so bad is that the gas-guzzlers are almost the norm, selling stupid monstrous SUVs and pickups by the million. Thats a difference and has nothing to do with bashing the US car industry because its American. Before you point on me being German, yes, part of the German car industries products is not much better. But that has in the first place to do with that the percentage of luxury cars built in Germany is nowhere higher.

Anyway, I hope Porsche is smart enough to kill the Estoque, one of the ugliest cars I have seen in quite a while. Someone should have told Lambo massive air entrances in the nose do not work in a four door.

The Panamera is not ugly looking, I can definitely see myself getting used to it, but I would still rather take a Maserati Quattroporte or a Mercedes CLS55 AMG any day.

It just annoys me that Germany gets a free pass with making gas-guzzling vehicles but people scream bloody murder and single out American cars for being gas-guzzlers.
If Ford made this exact car that Porsche is putting out, people would be screaming bloody murder, enviornmentalist would be protesting, our own government would pass laws fine Ford and thus cease production, etc....
The cost of this vehicle is besides the point.

Anyhow, the car is ugly. If one wants a performance German car, Porsche makes plenty of two-seater exotic sports cars.

Remind me again, how many of these will be sold compared to Chevy Tahoes and Ford Expeditions?

Doesn't matter, the Porsche Panamera Sedan is a gas-guzzler!
I have to rain on the unveiling of this car's parade.
It's my duty.
Regardless of how many Tahoes and Expeditions are sold, the Porsche Panamera Sedan is STILL a gas-guzzler!
It consumes tons of fossil fuel and leaves a large carbon foot print.

Yeah, I'll have one of these with a diesel, please...

rotfl Good one!!

Umm, guys..... there WILL be a diesel powered Panamera offered in 2010 as well as a hybrid version.

"Next year around March Porsche will launch a diesel version of its Cayenne but the big SUV isn’t the only model from the sports carmaker destined to feature an efficient oil-burner. The upcoming Panamera sedan, due in early 2010, will also feature a diesel option, according to leaked information at a recent Porsche focus group in California.

The new Panamera diesel engine will likely be the same Audi-sourced 3.0L V6 turbodiesel set to debut in the Cayenne next year and will feature a similar 240hp (179kW) output as the SUV. With Porsche’s growing influence over the Volkswagen Group, the sports carmaker is also gaining greater access to the German giant’s parts bin, which includes a series of V8, V10 and even V12 diesel powertrains. However, anything bigger than the V6 diesel engine has so far been ruled out due to the extra weight these engines carry. In addition to the diesel, Porsche will also use the Panamera to showcase its commitment to green motoring with the introduction of a hybrid model using another VW Group 3.6L V6 mated to a 110hp (82kW) electric motor. Porsche’s hybrid drive system will allow drivers to use any combination of the two powerplants, much like today’s Toyota Prius."

Some of the beauty lies beneath the skin.

...And the cheapest way to give a car value is how you bend the exterior sheet metal, bend it the right way and most people will drool all over it no matter what is underneath the skin, bend it the wrong way and it loses value and sales - this car has sheet metal that is the later - it's ugly.

Ugly it may be, but to the Porsche enthusiast or boy racer, who's wife won't let him buy an 911 because he can't take the kids anywhere, and because the Cayenne is not the right car. This will take sales away from the alternatives such as the M3, M5, RS4, RS6 etc.

In a few months we will see this car staying in front of the house of a hip hop star on MTV painted in orange or neon green with spinning rims and suede seats and hear this sentences like this:
"Yeah, thatz my new ride, man, a Porche Panamara got the chrome rims and a custom paint job by my broz at West Coast Customs....."
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

As much as I love diesels, they DO NOT belong in a Porsche.  no
Diesels are for little VWs and real trucks (Ford) and station wagons.  Cool

I don't think it's a bad looking car but the Maserati Quattroporte is prettier. I like fact that the Panamera only has 4 seats as I'd much rather seat 4 in sport seat comfort that have a token 5th seat.

My biggest objection would be paying $100k for a 4,100lb V-6 sedan. I'm not a power fanatic but I think this car is a poor value (on paper anyway) when an M5 can be had for less than the starting price.

I'm sure it handles well but I think $60k would be a better entry price. On the other hand, given the limited production I'm sure Porsche will sell all they plan to build at the stated prices.

I'll be anxious to see how resale value holds up for the V-6 cars.

Anyone find it ironic that Porsche now own Lamborghini?

I wouldn't say that. Porsche and Lamborghini are different animals, the first being a relatively mass-market sports car manufacturer and Lamborghini being a maker of super cars. Just because one introduces a sedan doesn't mean that the other will, and having one does not make it better than the other.

Please, no! I saw a bright yellow Rolls Royce convertible, newest model (Corniche?), with a black engine bay cover, this weekend and my eyes are still hurting.
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

Pricing estimates are set at $100,000 - $150,000 while the 500 horsepower Panamera "S" will be priced near $200K USD.

The volume they are expecting does not go with those estimates.

It's clear that those estimates are likely for foreign markets converted to U.S. dollars.

Cars are always cheaper in the U.S., even European brands. Based on their sales target, I would guess it will likely start in the mid-$60's for a V6 model in the U.S.

Personally, I think it's beautiful, but I like odd cars like the BMW X6 and Porsche Panamera that stand out. Give me a good lease deal and I'm sold.

I think your suggestion that prices will start in the mid-$60K USD range is VERY optimistic.

According to Edmund's Inside Line: "Prices in Europe are expected to start at around $125,000 for the Panamera V6, ranging up to $195,000 for the Panamera Turbo. Sticker prices on the U.S. models could be slightly lower when it goes on sale in late 2009."

I think that the international market will make up the majority of Panamera sales, especially Russia and the Middle East.

Although I don't overly worry about the damaging effect on the environment of that particular car, I agree that we still have to fight for cleaner cars. And that fight gets tougher as the price of oil goes down and everyone starts asking "why can't I buy a 6.0L V8 escalade again?"
