Anyone Into Scuba Diving Here?

Fri Nov 28, 2008 1:58 pm

Been into it a while but just getting round to buying my gear.

Just bought a Scubapro T-Black BCD - its very nice. Bought the Mrs a T-Force at the same time and she's well pleased.

What gear does everyone use?

Any UK divers here?

Anyone recommend any dives in St Maarten or Puerto Rico? Off there for New Year and planning on doing my advanced open water.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

I've been into Scuba for about 12 years. I just got back from doing some wreck dives off the coast of Recife, Brazil last week.

I have not done St Maarten, however I have done quite a bit of diving on Aruba and Curacao. My favorite place in the Caribbean though, is Roatan. It's a beautiful reef and the place is relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of the Caribbean. That's where I did my open water.

I've dived around St. Martin in Dec-Jan, and it's not that great. The waters are kinda murky that time of year. But it's certainly better than places like the Florida coast. St. Barts is a couple hours away by boat - I recommend you take the trip and dive there as well.

Aruba and Curacao

You have'nt tried Bonaire ?

Personally i don't have a scuba lisence so it's only snorkling for me.

But I hear Bonaire is very good place.

Also Cozumel

I have been to both of these places and the water is great from a snorkling point of view atleast.

I did the PADI Open Water course when I was backpacking in Australia, we did the course in Sydney Harbour (and off Manly). That was in 2002, and the only time I've dived since then was a few months later when we got to the Great Barrier Reef. The main thing preventing me from diving again is cost, unfortunately

Me somewhere on the Great Barrier Reef!

The only equipment I have is a snorkel and prescription mask.

I dive and have done AUA, CZM, CUR and PVR. I have my own wet suit and fins, mask and snorkel, the rest I rent. Do not do it enough to buy my own equipment nor can I spend that kind of money on a hobby that I only do once or wtice a year.

I can definately confirm that. I've had my PADI for 7 years now (first junior and then advanced open water) and Bonaire is the only place I've ever dived so far. I did both my PADI courses there.

Also, having lived there for 4 years, I've seen plenty of the under water world and it's beautiful. I haven't been there for a year now, so I'm not 100% how everything looks after the hurricanes/storms. My dad was there last month though and he said it was ok.

As for my gear, I've always rented it.

Yeah, I dive...

Right now I am Advanced O/W with EANx (PADI), and I've dived Cozumel, Kona, Kauai, quite a bit around Ontario, and in Barbados and Belize in the next month.

I only own my snorkel, mask, fins, booties, and 3/2mm wetsuit I use in the warmer areas and in some parts of Ontario.

Great fun, and you are bound to find something new on every dive!

Happy Diving,

I took my PADI open water course last year.

I love it but I don't get to dive often.

I love to Scuba Dive. I just have my PADI rec dive certification, but love to get out and do it as much as possible. So far i have been to:

Cozumel
Aruba
St. Maarten
Cabo San Lucas
French Polynesia (Bora Bora and Moorea)
Red Sea (Sharm el Sheikh)
Florida Keys
Hawaii (Kona)
Bahamas
Grand Cayman

By far the best overall diving was at Grand Cayman or Cozumel. The best single dive was the Giant Manta night dive in Kona.

I did not care for the diving in St. Maarten at all. I have not dove Puerto Rico, but some friends of mine have told me that it is very nice.

It's definitely on my list. It's just been easier to get to Aruba and Curacao with frequent flyer miles.
