West Memphis Three

Fri Dec 05, 2008 3:11 pm

I'm a huge fan of Pearl Jam, they are very staunch activists on a number of issues. Some I support others I don't, one issue the members of Pearl Jam as well as many other musicians have taken up over the years is the West Memphis three.

I've read about this but still don't really understand what the big issue is with this case, a group of three teenagers apparently tortured and killed 2 or three other kids (not sure how many or their ages). One of the three confessed, and all three were sentenced to prison (the oldest getting a death sentence).

But they have all these supporters challenging the confession, and blaming their conviction on their taste in music and the occult?.. I was wondering if anyone could provide some more background into this, anyone from the area (Arkansas, Tennessee, Northern Mississippi) remember this case?..

I was reading MSNBC today and found this story, apparently Natalie Maines the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks is involved heavily in this case as she supports the West Memphis three. She is blaming the step father of one of the victims.

I just posted this in a thread about an hour before this, but mine was just on Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks... since yours is more in depth, I'll have mine deleted.

As far as Maines, she just doesn't know when to shut the heck up!!

I suggest folks do a little research on Findlaw and find out for yourself what this is all about.

Calling them "The West Memphis Three" is a disingenuous bit of wordsmithing that disguises what these people likely did with a gloss of 'political prisoner'.

The reality is a lot more sinister than people seem to think. These guys were not Hurricane Carter-who was also guilty by the way.

A pretty interesting read. Looks like there is a long list of people calling for a reinvestigation, even some of the relatives of the dead.

Check out the documentary "Paradise Lost." It's all about those murders. It's very interesting.
