Caroline Kennedy Replacing Hillary In U.S. Senate?

Mon Dec 08, 2008 10:18 pm

The New York Times and NBC News are reporting that Caroline Kennedy, daughter of JFK, has advised New York Governor Patterson that she wants to assume the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton's nomination to be Secretary of State.

"Caroline Kennedy, a daughter of America’s most storied political family who for many years fiercely guarded her privacy, is considering whether to pursue the Senate seat expected to be vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton early next year, a family member said Friday.

“I believe that she is considering it,” said her cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has spoken to Ms. Kennedy about the matter during the past week. “A lot of people the last couple of weeks have urged her to do it.”

Ms. Kennedy called Gov. David A. Paterson on Wednesday to discuss the position, Mr. Paterson confirmed Friday. The governor will choose a replacement for Mrs. Clinton upon her expected confirmation as secretary of state next month.

“The conversation was informational,” Mr. Paterson said. “She did not express an interest in the Senate, but we talked about the Senate, so I got that she was just trying to get some information to determine whether or not she would like to have an interest in it. And that was it.”

He added, “I haven’t offered the job to anyone.”

NBC News has just reported that the Senate seat is "Caroline Kennedy's for the asking".

I believe that this would be a good choice for the state of New York. Kennedy is as much of a media superstar as Clinton, would continue a female in the role of Senator, and has massive support by the Democrats in the U.S. Congress. She was a supporter of Obama and was a member of his Vice-Presidential selection committee.

Isn't it preferred that a person has some kind of record of elected public service at increasingly higher levels of responsibility, before you can get an appointment to the US Senate to fill out a vacated term?

At least up here in Canada, our boy Justin Trudeau had to face the voters when he expressed an interest in becoming a Member of Parliament.

Oh well, people get the kind of government that they deserve.

Quoting Ronglimeng (Reply 1):

Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution sets three qualifications for senators: 1) each senator must be at least 30 years old, 2) must have been a citizen of the United States for at least the past nine years, and 3) must be (at the time of the election) an inhabitant of the state they seek to represent.

Caroline Kennedy is an attorney and graduate of Harvard and Columbia Law. She has been active in the political arena especially regarding education reform for NYC public schools, so what's the problem? I believe she has as at least as much experience than Hillary did when she was elected to the U.S. Senate. Hilary spent years in the White House, but Caroline has spent her entire life around high-level politics. She would have instant access to people in all levels of government as well as the powerbrokers in both political parties - both of which is good news for New York citizens.

I saw a couple of interviews on this topic on an American station last night.

Two female journalists were being interviewed. One of them, more in line with my way of thinking, asked rhetorically "why don't we just admit we have an aristocracy in the United States, and rename the institution "The House of Lords"?.

The other journalist agreed with the first, intellectually, but confessed that she was of a certain age and still was sentimental about the little girl who looked so brave at her father's funeral so long ago.

I don't question her qualifications per se, however I would question her political chops in the role.

To be honest, I can't say I knew what she even sounded like before the Democratic convention and the VP vetting process when she did several interviews. Quite frankly, she came off (to me anyway) as a little cool, brusque, and thin-skinned when questioned by the reporters.

For such a previously private person, she just doesn't sound like someone who would relish the idea of getting down in the trenches when it came to the political games, which would be fine until she had to run for office on her own.

Which begs the question -- is she just a placeholder until the Dems can come up with a "real" candidate when the seat comes up for grabs next election cycle (2010 maybe) ?

I like that "House of Lords" quote, because she would make an excellent candidate if we had such a creature here in the US.

Well the K.'s certainly have the money to purchase it and I am sure the govener could use a little extra bling. The K's also have plenty of power to hand out the special jobs to those who need tidying up. Sure it could happen I guess .. Why not qualifications ? who cares , what did Hillary have ? none

She's perfect for the job !  bigthumbsup

We do not have a House of Lords here, but we treat the wealthy like we do. The worship of the rich and famous and also famous political names has us where we are now, screwed up and dam near broke. I do not question her qualifications, I question her motivations. The rich always think they know what is good for us, but it always seem that they get richer and we get poorer. We do get the government we deserve, and it shows.

I’ll repeat my refrain again: we don’t need another damn Kennedy in office. This is not a birthright. Pick someone at random out of the phonebook and they’d be as capable as any other elitist, especially a Kennedy.

Hope this post passes muster.

As first predicted on A.net here:

http://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...ums/non_aviation/read.main/2009780

Rumors abound and there is not yet one hard story on it but it seems as if Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg is becoming the dark horse favorite to fill Senator Clintons term. So the Kennedy legacy in the Senate may not yet be over. The linked article discusses different people that seem to be in the running and as I said, Kenndy's nomination is only a rumor at this point.

It seems the opening came with the Clinton Appointment as Sec.of State, I fully expected her to move back to Mass. when her Uncle left the Senate for whatever reason. When she spoke for Obama, the writeing was on the wall, another Kennedy. Now she will not be a carpetbagger as so many have been in politics, including Kennedys. We have one in Rhode Island.

Which really doesn't help Kennedy. Sorry gal, but the Senate is not part of your inheritence.

Being a Senator is no small responsibility. Palin, who I like in small doses, actually had a career as Mayor and Governor. Kennedy's credentials include being a wealthy Upper West Side socialite who enjoys a few martinis and being from a revered Democrat family. Then again, with Obama being sworn in shortly, I guess being a Democrat with a paper thin resume qualifies you for high office.

I find political dynasties absurd, who do I have to blame for it, why the morons who vote the name and money and nothing else. I have nothing against Caroline Kennedy personally, except once again a family with a name and money. Has she given up her married name? Has she divorced ? All I have heard so far is Caroline Kennedy, and that is the way it is, trading on the famous name. That is what is wrong and breeds curruption and influence peddling in my view. Above it says Caroline will walk with the womans vote, that says it all.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting:

Caroline Kennedy launched a full-bore campaign Monday to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton in the U.S. Senate, calling New York's governor and other key Democrats to press her desire to extend the family dynasty. Kennedy reached Gov. David A. Paterson Monday afternoon as he toured weather-battered portions of upstate New York. "She'd like at some point to sit down and tell me what she thinks her qualifications are," said Paterson, who will choose Clinton's successor.

Goodness,
It sounds like the US political system is turning into India's where people just vote on family name and the various empty promises they make every election cycle.

I completely agree and I feel the way about both sides of the aisle. We need new blood not more of the same. I'm the rare Republican who actually admires tJFK and RFK but the latest generation of Kennedys just don't seem to have it.

I've said this before: This country reminds me of Pan Am in so many ways. We're slowly bleeding to death partially from self inflicted wounds and partially from incompetent executive leadership...

Nice breakdown of her qualifications, or lack thereof. Her resume is "laden with positions devoid of responsibility."

Also an interesting question posited....why is birthright office holding not as repulsive as Blago trying to sell it?

I am not going to post about her qualifications in that even though she hasn't been elected; I am sure she will know how to get things done.

I think some are forgetting how important this seat is. They need to be able to have a certain star power and the ability to get things done and help the state of New York. You need someone who can stand in front of a microphone and the ability to command attention when they speak.

There was an article somewhere that made the point that while Hillary Clinton is somewhat Junior in the Senate, she has influence. She has influence because she knows how things work and how to get things done. In certain senate positions, it is about the ability to command attention (NY, CA, MA) to get things done, and Caroline Kennedy can do that. There are other states that they don't need to be well known, but have the ability to just help the state. But in NY, you need to be able to not only get things done, but be a visible person and stand in front of the microphone and assert influence that way (i.e. Chuck Schumer)

You know, I take offense to that. I am a Public Policy and Political Science major, and while I don't consider myself an expert, I do think I know some things.

Some New Yorkers have that problem. But the fact is in New York, your senators can't just work behind the scenes that some do. They need to be high profile, and she is. They need to see their senators on the Sunday shows and holding press conferences. I know what my senators do, and I don't need to see them on TV to know that.

Well, that's your prerogative to be offended. If you’re a Poli Sci guy, then where are you coming from with this “high profile” stuff? If every Senator fights for the limelight, they’ll all fail. The Senator from Wyoming is no more or less important than the junior Senator from NY. So I’m confused why you are buying into some elitist NY garbage. They need to see their Senators on TV? Come on.

http://wcbstv.com/local/caroline.kennedy.us.2.889765.html

And I love how she just stepped totally into the muck, was awkward, couldn’t answer questions, and stumbled around. So why aren’t her qualifications being attacked? Rather ironic that Palin was skewered for inexperience, yet Princess Caroline has NO experience in anything except being a Kennedy and an elitist and she’s magically bestowed some mystical ability to be a Senator by birthright. Uh-huh.

You have to realize that politics is filled with this sort of elitism and feeling of entitlement. More than most other walks of life who you are, who you know and what your last name is has a lot to do with it. I mean you can just take this example. If you look at Paterson's short list after Hillary was tapped as Secretary of state her name probably wasn't on it. I bet her name never came up. I bet the Kennedy family knew this and she called him and from that point the good ol Media machine stepped in and Paterson probably feels overwhelmed to the point where I think it's a done deal. Who can we blame for this Eliteism and feelings of entitlement by the politicians? Why it is us, the voters who continue this ridiculous worship of names and celebrity. I will never understand it, supposedly intelligent people. The history books are full of stories about greed, curruption and influence by entrenched politicians, and what do we do have?? Caroline Kennedy trying to muscle aside all the others in the line with her money and name. Do you think she is aware of the weakness of the voters?
